A few issues..you cant get away with playing what really is 6 or 7 players who are really in essence our reserve team.... also playing 2 midfielders at centre back...ok in champo but against top premiership teams? Asking for trouble.... nor giving a goalkeeper who hasnt played for yonks a game to "keep him going" as woody said...play your best keeper available.. also tactically we need more bodies in midfield to support strikers and liddle. Keown said young lads haven't been given platform to perform ...I agree, woody should have change formation after 10 minutes. Meijas should stick to being a training ground goalkeeper. Nevermind I predicted defeat but Woody is still naive and learning. Not his fault. Spurs are light years ahead of us financially

Way out of his depth in this game. Can’t criticise too much for that but he looks younger than he is. File alongside Wood at the moment

You think maybe he realises at their place he can't win - especially given the injuries and schedule.

And so has given a few lads the chance to play.

There's only positives from this evening.

The big difference between the Championship and the Premier League is the number of errors. We've made a couple and have been punished.

Probably some adrenaline dump , not aided by the pressure being off their midfield inside 15 mins ..
No bearing on the the young lad either way

if it's your first professional start of your career at the age of 21 then it's far from ideal to be playing against that calibre of opposition. he hasnt been truly discussed as a viable option for the first team in the championship, so to expect him to do anything against the champions league runners up is optimistic at best

liddle is blameless in my eyes. not ready or anywhere near good enough for that kind of game, but woodgate must have been desperate to rest some legs to start him. we looked a different team with saville in there instead, but you still cant blame him for being off the pace. that will have been lightyears away from anything he'll have experienced before.

hopefully he can get a good loan move and make some progress

I thought he looked decent in places. Neat and tidy. He wasn’t the reason we conceded those two goals.
Deserved another chance some time

We were never going to win the cup, so I've not problem with this, especially as we did not get battered or embarrassed.

One of the key things about coaching certain players (not all) is some react better to be put in a situation well above their comfort zone, before you put them in a level where they will be initially aiming for. This only really works with players with strong character, as if they're weak it can send them drastically backwards.

It can go a number of ways, but the two main ways are below, and assume you have a player currently playing at level 4, but you need him at level 6

1) Strong character player (chuck them in at the deep end method):
Play him at a game at level 8, he'll struggle probably (like he did)
Play him at a game at level 6, he'll find it much easier than the last game, so should find this level quicker.

2) Weak character player (slow and steady wins the race method):
Player currently playing at level 4, but you need him at level 6
Play him 10 mins of a game at level 5, he'll struggle probably
Play him 20 mins of a game at level 5, get slightly better
Play him 30 mins of a game at level 5, get slightly better
Play him 90 mins of a game at level 5, get slightly better
Play him 90 mins of a game at level 5, get slightly better
Play him 10 mins of a game at level 6, he'll struggle probably
Play him 20 mins of a game at level 6, get slightly better
Play him 30 mins of a game at level 6, get slightly better
Play him 90 mins of a game at level 6, get slightly better

Some players react miles better just been thrown in the deep end and told to get on with it, some it takes ages to build their confidence up.

You see it all the time where players have massive potential, so are put straight in at the top leagues, but they don't have the character, so they vanish off the face of the earth.

Then there's players that are chucked in, and they start performing after a couple of games, rather than it taking years/ months.

Liddle is 21 mind, so needs to get moving quick, or he'll be out the door, maybe it's a kick up the backside/ reality check.

The lad is 21 not 16, 17.. he's gotta play at some point. Just going by his size, athleticism and stamina, I don't think this lad is destined to play for us.

I watched 1st half again as I had visitors who distracted . To be fair to liddle I thought he did better than the experienced "older head "Adam clayton. The lad tried to get stuck in and pass forward but was not alot of options for him. Spurs had lots of willing runners.

He made an impact when coming on as late sub at Elland Road. We were being routed and he got stuck in straight away with very strong but fair tackles and positive passes. Did he not make several 1st half centres last night?
Do you want local youngsters to succeed or not? Surely you encourage players on their debut.

Just saying what i saw Rob just because he is young doesn't mean he had a good game. Would have liked to have seen the same team that gave Spurs such a good game at the Riverside.

I think the fair term would be that "the game passed him by". Probably not the right game to give him a full debut.

In the heat of the moment I was surprised at how far off the play and the pace he was and couldn't believe he started but in the cold light of day, its another player getting experiences that will help in the long run - and certainly demonstrates what a real play crisis is considering how much Jose was complaining about being down to bare bones over the course of this tie.

After Spence coming into the side and doing so well I reckon Woodgate was hoping throwing Liddle into the side would be another gamble that would pay off, but it wasn't the right game to throw him into. Not his fault but he did look out of his depth.

I think you're being a bit harsh. He didn't have a great game, but the lad was making his full debut against the Champions League runners up.

You have to take it in perspective, of course he wasn't going to control the game, but hopefully it's given him an insight into the pace of the game against a top opposition and gives him something to go away and work on with a different perspective, something he may not have been able to do before.

I wouldn't write him off just yet.

I think it was more to do with us giving them a goal start. That settled them down and every sours player wanted the ball. I think Ben was just in a position where he was outnumbered constantly. Same as any of our other players would have been in there.

Some decision making wasnt the best but credit spurs once we gave them a goal start they moved it very well

I heard plenty of moaning about Nmecha on Tuesday night as well.

It’s as if a few of our fans are now priding themselves on being able to judge a player after 45 minutes of an away Cup match against top class opposition.

We have to give players a chance.

I have a long memory and some of our top performers this season have all been written off on this forum at one time or another -

Fletcher, McNair, Ayala, Howson, Tav, Saville, and one or two others.

It’s getting to the point where if a player is given a hard time by some fans I start to think he will be decent once he beds in.

We all get players wrong from time to time but I think writing Liddle and Nmecha off after a poor team performance first half away at Tottenham is too extreme and too soon in my view.
