Marcus Maddison V Patrick Roberts

Now I firmly believe Roberts is the more gifted player and that he'll be superb for us but the better he is, the less likely we'll get him beyond the end of season. Even if we were to get him at half what city paid for him it would be 6 million.

Maddison has 10+ goals and 30+ assists since the start of last season and is available for 2.5m and we're bowing out and letting him go to Charlton. You look at players like Dack at Blackburn, even Tomlin at Boro who we made a profit on. Why aren't we coughing the money up, getting a player we can potentially make a profit on and getting him on a 4 year deal where we can potentially plan beyond the end of the season and build a team around.

People can talk about work rate but frankly we won't get that from Roberts anyway.

I get his attitude is a risk but frankly missing out on genuine creatively talented midfielders in favour of loan players when we need to start planning beyond 6 months seems daft to me.

Players like him don't come around at that price very often in today's market and we were evidently interested.

If he does go to Charlton/Blackburn I hope he's a flop and I can laugh at my idiocy but I can see him being a proper player and us ruing it.

Charlton won't be paying £2.5m either.

He's out of contract in 6 months so it will be less than that.

I doubt Roberts wages are cheap and I'm sure we could push to it if we really wanted to. Seems an investment opportunity to me.

I know we're skint by the way, I've seen the correspondence from the club confirming it but I was shot down when I first mentioned it fcuk knows how long ago.

That said, we've been told funds are available if the right player comes along. Can't see many better value opportunities than him.

Even if we sold Randolph we don't seem interested enough which I find frustrating.

When Roberts goes back in the summer and we need that creative spark in midfield, who the fcuk are we gonna buy with that pedigree at that price? [xx(]

That's the release clause that they've met I believe.

I’d take Roberts over Maddison

Read the post Newy. As would I if money was no object, but it is and we won't be able to retain him beyond 6 months. Building up a team that plays great football between now and the end of the season is grand but when we lose Roberts and there's no creative midfielders available at less than 5m in the summer we'll be shagged and back in the same position we've been in since Gaston left.

Whereas with Maddison he'd be ours for 3 years and we could make a profit on him.

Maddison may well choose to wait until the summer and leave on a free. He'll be able to negotiate a better wage that way.

I do hope so, SilentProf and that we're the club to get him.

"Maddison has 10+ goals and 30+ assists since the start of last season and is available for 2.5m and we're bowing out and letting him go to Charlton"

TBH, I'm done with arguing we should sign players on the basis of statistics. They're good, but they don't transfer with the player.

There's a string of strikers we've signed who've failed to bring their goals with them, going back to Alves and including Juke, Boyd, McDonald, Rhodes and Britt. YEs they've scored some, but none has recaptured their previous form.

Doesn't just apply to strikers: Flint, Clayton and Saville all had decent goal records before coming here.

The context in which they play is important.

So let's have no more singing on the basis on numbers; we should do business on the basis of watching players and asking how effective can they be in our set up?

What if Man City were paying most of Roberts wages and they might be amenable for him to sign for us for next season as well?
I don't know either thing to be true but would it make a difference then to Roberts v Maddison?

There's a reason no team has picked him up yet despite his outstanding stats.

Look at his instagram, big time charlie doesnt even cover it, and seems incredibly in love with himself.

Big_nothing I remember you saying we were skint and were going to sign Free’s and loan players only. 2 months later we’d spent about £50m including £15m on one player alone.

Think that might have something to do with why you were ‘shot down’.

Maddison is a lazy so and so who we should avoid. He is a poor man's Ozil. We are playing a high tempo, high pressing style that requires lots of work rate. He doesn't offer that.

Well you certainly don't Jlinardi because it was AFTER the spending spree. It was a financial forecast made for following transfer windows after Monk had spent a fortune that summer. I'd know because I still have the source of the information and it's dated [^]

We did sign Flint and Saville after it, that I will concede. However all I was doing was passing information on, it was from as close to THE horses mouth when it comes to the finances of middlesbrough football club as it possibly could be. As anyone else who's seen it will attest to.

Londons_Moggie - Neither does Roberts.

Rob - It would make the situation better if such talks had occurred. I'm somewhat sceptical though. I'd sooner we have a player we owned.
