Truly the greatest player to play the game in my eyes.

Were So lucky to watch him week in week out on the tele in this era and I feel blessed to have seen him play live at the Nou Camp.

Long live the GOAT

He's by far and away the greatest of all time.

No one comes close.

His numbers - goals & assists - are incredible. He just makes the game look ridiculously easy.

The goal last night against Atletico just epitomised the way he plays.

Easy 1 2 with Suarez and placed in the bottom corner, in the 86th minute away at a title contender. Simeone's reaction said everything.

Just glad I too have seen him live and score[^]

Such a test. [rle]

He left Real Madrid because he wasn't getting enough attention, and was outscored by a 36 year old in Italy.

No denying Ronaldo's brilliance in England, but given Messi has repeatedly scored against all the best English sides over the years, I doubt he'd have struggled to score against Burnley and Sunderland.

He is at the biggest club on the planet and has won everything he can win, and will continue to do so, why would he leave that? Any club he goes to will be a step down

My point is that you can't really say one is challenging themself and the other isn't when they've both spent their entire career at the biggest clubs in world football.
United were winning the league and trophies consistently before Ronaldo, Real Madrid were too, as were Juventus.
Barcelona were the same before Messi also.

Fair enough if one signed for Bournemouth, or even a big club that was struggling, and continued to smash it, but that's not what either has done.

What's your basis for it being gash that can't also be laid at the bottom half of the Premier League?

Biggest win this season in La Liga was a 5-0 Real Madrid against bottom side Leganes.

Biggest win in the Premier League was 9-0 Leicester against Southampton, with an honourable mention of Man City hammering Watford 8-0.

Leaving aside how flukey they've been in avoiding defeat, Liverpool have lost only 1 league match in 2 years, and both they and Man City went on winning runs in to the high double figures. Not exactly painting a picture of a challenging league.

TenStoneTom Posted on 03/12/2019 00:35

The basis is players who would have zero chance of getting in bottom half premier league sides will be first team regulars in most spanish teams. The fact the game is so slow it makes the smaller clubs alot less competitive also. It's like watching paint dry.

It's funny how the Spanish league is labelled as gash, was it gash when Ronaldo was there? if so, why didn't he do as well as Messi [8)]

I'm sure Messi is 6th on the list for most goals in the prem against top sides, Ronaldo doesn't feature.

I've watched Ronaldo in the flesh several times at Man Utd, a couple of times for Madrid and also for Portugal. I've seen Messi play live a few times for Barcelona and he really was on another level.

Ronaldo doesn't influence the game outside of the box like Messi does, when he's at the top of his game he's the best playmaker in the world AND the best (or joint best) goalscorer in the world.

The first time I watched Messi i was absolutely blown away with how good he was and I've watched most of the modern greats in the flesh (90s era onwards). He is by far the best player I've ever seen.

If you can scrape a few hundred quid together book an easyjet flight to Barcelona and see him before he retires. It's also a fantastic city to visit for a weekend.

The one club man argument is just weird. What a bizarre world where loyalty gets criticized. He's arguably the greatest player the world's ever seen. To say he isn't because he didn't play in the premier league is just flat bizarre.

No what ifs for me watch him play and you know you're watching a great. I saw him live a few times in his breakthrough season. Not knowing much about football I didn't quite know what I was witnessing but there was a buzz around him even then.

Hes terrible Valverde isnt he, how he can justify playing Griezmann as a wide forward is beyond me. The only position Griezmann is any good at is the second striker role he plays for France and played for Atletico. Dembele or Fati should play every game for me, if they did Barca would be much better.

Totally agree with this.

If you love football and the way Messi plays then I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen him live yet, to do so! Especially sooner rather than later before he eventually retires.

It's going to be a sad day in football when he eventually does hang up his boots.

It'll also be interesting to see how Barcelona cope because he's been the main man there for about 15 years and he is the forefront of everything they do!

Valverde should have gone after the Roma game, then after Anfield, then after the Copa del Rey final, it's ridiculous.
For me Griezmann should never have signed, total ego signing from the president as the players and fans made it clear he wasn't wanted.
Dembele is a liability, he's been here 3 years and still hasn't shown any consistent form, just flashes of it like his goal v Spurs. Out for another 3 months now too. Ansu Fati looks great so far but the fact that they were relying on a 16 year old to save them in the first few games this season says it all, a club as big as Bara should never be in that position.

"I have to ask you to list all those games that Liverpool have flukily avoided defeat in the last 2 years"

Actually, you're right, it's more avoiding drawing.
Mahrez blazing a late penalty over the bar at 0-0, the winner against Everton, the "penalty" winner against Brighton, the last minute own goal winner against Tottenham, the shocking keeper error to take the lead against Crystal Palace, the dive for the free kick that won it late against Newcastle, the winner against Sheffield United, the "penalty" winner against Leicester, Palace's goal being ruled out the other week and then the pinball that led to the winner.

Not the league, but can't not mention the "penalty" that won them the Champions League within the first minute, never in a million years should have been a penalty for handball.

Could probably list almost every league penalty under Klopp in the past two seasons, and chances are it was a Mane or Salah dive.

Agree parnabys.

I was at the home leg of the Roma game and they won 4-1 that day and you could tell even then the fans werent convinced with the manager, then to get dicked 3-0 in the second leg is ridiculous, then for it to happen the following season against Liverpool isnt acceptable. I cant see them winning the champions league with him in charge but whilst they have Messi they have a chance. Hopefully this is Valverdes last season as coach.

The game is short of free kick specialists these days isnt it? Growing up I remember loads of players who were great free kick takers, outside of Messi its hard to name one, I guess some would count CR but not for me, when Messi misses its normally by a foot or less, CR puts 9/10 into the wall or miles wide/over.

The comparisons between him and Ronaldo are ridiculous, they are noting close to being on the same level.

Even if you consider them equally as goalscorers, if you took away half of their goals each season, Ronaldo would be no different to Harry Kane, he'd be a poacher who scores 20 goals a season.

Messi would still be the best player on the planet by a distance. He brings so much more to the game that comparing him is unfair, the best finisher, passer, dribbler and playmaker on the planet for over a decade.

Ronaldo 2018 - 49 goals, 13 assists.
Messi 2019 - 46 goals, 17 assists.

Messi pips it by 1, but Messi's 2018 stats were 51 goals, 26 assists, so it shouldn't have heen Ronaldo last year either if you're going off purely goals and assists.

Juventus have won the last 8 league titles, with or without Ronaldo.
They've been in the last 8 Supercoppa finals, with or without Ronaldo, and that was 2018 so not sure whether it counts.

He didn't even play for Portugal until the semi final because he didn't think it was worth the effort, so I'm absolutely not having that it was all down to Ronaldo that they won it.

So if it's not down to goals, then he didn't transform a team either.

Mane should have finished above Ronaldo, Van Dijk did finish above Ronaldo.

Same as the attitude he has shown recently when Sarri has subbed him, only for his team to go on and win the games.

He was subbed early on against AC Milan at 0-0 for Dybala....Dybala went on to score the winner, where was Ronaldo?? Already on the way home in a strop.

He was also subbed away at Loco Moscow at 1-1...they went on to win 2-1.

Safe to say Sarri isn't scared at dropping and replacing the big baby[^]

That's one of the big differences between Messi & Ronaldo. Messi is a team player and would do everything to help his team....Ronaldo does everything for himself and doesn't care about his team...

And that is why Messi is rightly lauded as the GOAT by more fans[^]
