How painful is a hamstring injury...

Just took a tumble and the top of the back of my leg seized up. The pain was chuffin horrible.

After 2 or 3 mins I got that sickly feeling in my stomach as though I was going to faint (only had that twice following injuries - both times Iíd broken something. Always thought it was my body telling me something bad had happened.)

Itís eased off a bit now (just a numbing feeling) but every now and then Iíll make a move and I get the searing pain again.

Iím assuming I just need to be careful, rest up and take a painkiller or 6 [?]

Depends if you've pulled it or tore it.

I've pulled mine a few times and took a few weeks to repair. If you've tore it then I'd assume you'd know, but the sickly feeling doesn't sound good. The only times I've had that is when I've broke bones or done ligament damage.

Might be worth getting it checked out!

Having had a serious hamstring injury it is very painful and can be a problem for several weeks. Be careful about tingling or pins and needles feeling in your leg, it could be a sign of nerve damage. A visit to your GP may be a good idea if still painful tomorrow.

Extremely painful depending on the severity. If there's a tear then you'll likely get black and blue bruising. I tore mine a couple of years ago and was on crutches for nearly a week, couldnt walk properly for a good few weeks and then it was probably over 3 months before I could start any light exercise. That was with no physio mind.

Definitely worth getting it checked out by the doc
Can you feel a divot in the leg, if so its likely a grade 3 tear (the worst)

Hopefully just a strain but see what tomorrow brings and get it looked at if worried

Iíve got a divet below my saggy asre - think thatís common for an auld gadge like me. [;)]

Must admit, for reasons I know not (drama mebe) my first response, because of the pain, was a tear.
Iíll see how it is tomorrow.

Having "done" my hammies numerous times during my career (I think 20-30 times, looking back)...you'll have a tear if you can't walk 20 yards without help. A grade 1 pull, and you should be fine, but the ache will be there for 2-3 weeks before you can start anything strenuous. As I got older, the rest time obviously extended. I do stretch regularly now, and haven't had one (touchwood) for a year or so.

Sounds like cramp to me. If youre not in constant pain the doubt you've torn anything.

Did mine once chasing full pelt round the boundary trying to stop a 4. Wnet down like Iíd been shot, within 2 steps face planted the grass. It fkin knacked and I couldnít get up and had to be lifted off the pitch. Couldnít contemplate moving and just sat there in agony. Several weeks and many physio sessions on my hammy and hips / lower back later I gingerly took the field again. Very unpleasant injury. Didnít stop the 4 either.

Only one way to cure it, three weeks doing nothing.

Really top athletes may get away with two if they are lucky.

Physios may help the process but risk of damage is always there. Its quite a big muscle so it just needs the tear to reform.

Torn my hamstring before and had a big black bruise down the back of my leg. It was quite sore probably the same as a badly sprained ankle sore but not as sore as an abscess in your tooth sore.

Very painful.

Cracked ribs are more painful though.

I did mine running for a boundary in cricket too and it was more of a direct sharp pain and then feeling sick. Compared to fracturing my collarbone and breaking two ribs tumbling down a mountain after a skiing accident.

I was back in a few weeks so it wont have been a bad one. I also feignted afterwards. Its to do with being dehydrated and then your blood sugar dropping. Lucozade Sport, a mars bar and a snickers did the trick.
