Ski Centre - detailed plans

A full planning application has been submitted to Middlesbrough Council for the indoor ski facility, to be built at Middlehaven Dock on a seven-acre brownfield site next to the Grade II listed clock tower, Temenos and Middlesbrough College.

The overall planning application has cost in the region of £600,000.

Hope weíre not footing the bill for this

Can't wait for it to be done, but I don't particularly like the artists impression of it. Preferred the see through looking images that were originally around.

Though the cladding on the artist impression probably won't be allowed anyway!

Trafford only gets about 1.2 million a year and itís on the motorway network. With Middlehaven being a cul de sac, they are going to need some marketing budget.

Visitors not necessarily users. Parent brings a child for a lesson, that is 2 visitors.

Or approximately 8 people through the door every minute, 365 days a year assuming itís open 12 hours a day. [:D]

Its 5 metres shorter than Castleford's. Itll be too short for a competent skier. It should be 250m minimum.

I'm very cynical,

Follow the money, who's getting paid for all this planning?

2 million a year? Theyíd be lucky to get 100,000 a year.

Given that their numbers are indicating that they expect a few hundred visitors every hour, I think the concerns that the slope may be a bit too small might carry some weight. Maybe they could just refrigerate roseberry topping instead.

If it's a success it's down to entrepreneurs, if it fails it's the council's fault.

Great to see a local development such as this. I remember the numbers Billingham Forum brought in, and continues to do so.

Joking aside, I just canít see it. Itís worrying that they are throwing around these numbers which clearly could not happen.
Then thereís the cost. We have people on here complaining about the cost of going to the match in what is one of the poorest areas of the country.
Without looking into it Iím going to go out on a limb and guess that admission to the ski centre is likely to be even more expensive. Fair enough, people would travel. But thereís simply not enough disposable income locally to help bolster the figures above.
Then thereís the logistics, where are these thousands of people daily going to park? Are they to use public transport? Because itís not exactly great up here.

A bit of googling brings up some figures on Ski Dubai. That gets 1500 visitors daily, but itís next to one of the worlds largest shopping malls in a city that receives 14.2 million visitors annually. Thereís also a bit of disposable cash in the area!
The Boro Ski centre developers are claiming theyíre going to improve on those numbers by 3500 daily.

Iíd love to see this get off the ground, but if the company pitching it require anything like the number of people through the door that theyíre pitching to make it work. Then I just canít see it.

I think too many are confusing figures. Visitors don't equate to participants.

Maybe they include block lessons? One person might go 12 times a year to learn how to ski properly ? But still think 2million is optimistic.

The Forum spectator areas were full when the ice rink and pool opened. Far more visitors than just those participating.

But does anyone know how many people even use somewhere like Jump at Portrack every day/week/month? That is on top of snow centre activities.

Itís busier at weekends and during school holidays but very quiet or even shut through the week.

This ski slope would be no different, which makes the 2 million visitors per year even more ridiculous.

Well if the figures are to be believed, Boro is soon going to receive more annual visitors than Boston, Chicago, Abu Dhabi, Edinburgh and Cape Town receive internationally each year.

I think Iíll sink everything I have into a bit of land over the border.

Appears to be the same one that's on the apartments round that way that they need to change. It may not be as it's just an artist impression, but it does appear to be the same type.

Manchester's "Chill Factore" centre claims it has had around three million visitors, in total, in the last twelve years.

----- "After two years in the making, Chill Factore launched in November 2007 bringing the UKís longest indoor real snow slope (180 metres) to the North West.

Since opening the doors Chill Factore has welcomed over 3 million visitors and is regarded as a leading UK visitor attraction!

Located less than 4 miles away from Manchester City Centre, adjacent to The Trafford Centre; one of, if not the most popular shopping centres in Britain, Chill Factore is an easily accessible, fun and popular leisure destination for absolutely everyone." -----
