"NEIL WARNOCK could make a shock return to management with Middlesbrough.
Jonathan Woodgate is facing the sack at the Riverside after a dismal start which has seen him manage just three Championship wins"

From the Sun, so not overly trustworthy, but I'd snap your hand off.
I presume it'd be a short term contract.

Would be kind of funny and predictable if we made this push towards youth and playing good football and then immediately throw it out of the window at the first sign of trouble.

Gibson reverts to his old ways every time something goes wrong.

We've barely played good football all season, or tried to, that was thrown out the window by Woodgate at the first sign of trouble.

Ironically (iirc) we started playing 5 at the back against Warnock's Cardiff, and haven't stopped since.

It's not too late. I grant you we could and probably should have had him 3-4 times over the last year's in the champo (same goes for Billy Sharp as a player with millions blown on forwards).

We are sleep walking into going down into league one. It's clear we need a change and if it's warnock on a deal until the summer then fine by me.

It's kind of ironic as most times people have a pop at Gibson for not acting quick enough. He's maybe seen a change is needed and warnock is available and knows the division and gets the best out of what he's got.

I'm not sure he's a great longterm appointment but short term yes. I would prefer Adkins as he did well at Hull in a similar financial role (cost cutting etc).

I would take pretty much anyone with experience and that includes Pearson. I just think Woody and Keane is blind leading the blind in terms of getting a team out of the sh*t.

"I'm not sure he's a great longterm appointment but short term yes."

I think we are about to find ourselves in the same position as two years ago, albeit with a much worse squad and at the wrong end of the table.

Its always one step forward, three steps back with the Boro, except this time we didn't even take the step forward.

We have to do something though and if that means Warnock then so be it. There aren't many managers I'd rather have less than Woodgate!

I hate to call for a manager's sacking but this isn't even about Woodgate for me, if Warnock is available/willing/affordable then its a no-brainer. He is far more likely to keep us up than Woody and a host of other managers IMHO. Play it safe Gibbo.[^]

Football is a short term game now zoophonic. Get this bloke in until the fans start moaning about the football style and the things he says in interviews, then get some other fella in.

Appointing a manager on a 3-5 year deal nowadays is financially naive.

What's the point though? We might as well have just kept pulis. Arguably the football will be even worse.

If boro are serious about changing the style of football, you don't go and bring Warnock in at the first sign of trouble.

The football under Pulis was decent compared to what we've seen this season. We scored a lot more goals anyway. So I'd happily see a return to that.

The point is to stay in the division, not to play fancy football, surely?

Just for the record, I never wanted woodgate and predicted this season with him in charge would be a relegation battle. I was also against Monk's appointment.

What I'm saying is that if the club (and the supporters) are genuine about changing how we play football and the type of players we recruit, you've got to stick to that plan surely? I'm not against woodgate being replaced (although equally I think he's been given a rubbish hand to play) but to replace him with Warnock? You just surely rip up whatever you were initially trying to create.

You just end up in a circle of quick fix solutions - Strachan, pulis, Warnock. Long-term I just don't see the benefit.

Somebody like Atkins, or even nigel Pearson, will keep this team up without completely ripping up a longer-term strategy to improve the football we play.

"What I'm saying is that if the club (and the supporters) are genuine about changing how we play football and the type of players we recruit, you've got to stick to that plan surely? "

Fair enough brain, but I was never serious about it personally. I don't understand any club dishing out long term contracts in modern football. Tony Mowbray is the second longest serving manager in the Championship at Blackburn, he's been there just over 2.5 seasons and one of those was a League 1 promotion campaign that they were heavily odds on to achieve. He was initially appointed on an 18m deal, there was no 'long term plan' with him.

Every other manager is basically clinging on from season to season, even the ones who take teams up are normally out on their ear by the next Christmas.

I'm not actually sure that many of our fans are that serious about changing the style/players, certainly not at the expense of spending only our third ever season in history in the third tier (and seeing how badly that can go with one of our neighbours).

I'm totally comfortable with a circle of quick fix solutions, that's modern football. Just my opinion. [^]

Its to small and lacking in quality. Even with everyone fit it's not good enough and there will be very little to spend in January either (And who of any quality would want to come to the Boro at this stage anyway?

Could someone explain why a manager with a good record and a good career who has stated his intention to retire at the end of the season at 71 would even consider taking over a team with a small poor unbalanced injury prone squad and no money to rectify it. Even if he kept us up it wouldn't be seen as much of an achievement outside of our fanbase. If we went down it's a black mark tarnishing what's been a good career. A lose lose poison chalice I believe he will see it that way also. Theres literally no positive other than financial gain and I doubt we can offer him astronomical money and how long hes been at it I'm sure money will be low on his priorities if hes to take one more short term role I think hed be looking to achieve something.

Yeh but why on earth spend the last 6 months of your career with a team like ours. I'm sure he doesnt want to work with Gibson that much to end his career on a low possibly getting relegated with a fanbase that will turn on him quicker than anything if we dont win straight away playing like Brazil. It doesn't make any sense to me unless hes got a secret gambling addiction and desperately needs money. I'd honestly be baffled and shocked if Warnock came here. I'd be happy also!!

But ultimately, if you're serious about changing the style of football, and want to do it on a shoestring budget you don't go and employ Jonathan Woodgate.

Woodgate is out of his depth. It was a ridiculous decision by Gibson in the first place to give him the job. He will have known that he was taking a massive gamble and it has backfired.

Warnock will keep us up 100%. With regards to us not having the players suited to his style of play, I'm sure Warnock will likely make a few shrewd signings in January who will be suited to his style.

"The Gazette have ruled it out as the club's unofficial mouthpiece."

They're also claiming that Bola is now having to fill in at left back.

Now I might be being a bit cynical here, but I am sure that he was one of the players Woodgate identified in his presentation as the answer to our left back issue. Now 4 months later he's having to 'fill in' because of injuries to Friend (a centre back according to JW), Johnson (a winger according to JW) and Coulson (an academy graduate who is also a winger by trade).

The Gazette have become even more of a joke. They need to be asking some tough questions, but like Maddison on Tees, Gibson likes to keep those close who might dare to question him.

We need more than a couple of shrewd signings we need about 6 players in to get us up to scratch. Will warnock have any say in signings when hes potentially out the door in 6 months. Maybe loan deals and that's it. We still need 2 full backs we need another CB. We need a right winger a creative mid and striker. No chance you can get all that on a shoestring in January not with our recruitment.

Gamble? Playing Russian roulette with one bullet in a revolver is a gamble, playing it with a loaded shotgun is just suicide.

Woodgate was never going to be a manager to stabilise or get us out of this league (except down), everyone could see it but Gibson.
