Signed from Hull City for a club record fee of £750k, which for 15 years remained Hull record sale

I remember going to work one day & a work colleague said, 'you're going to sign Andy Payton', I was buzzing as he was a young fast striker, scoring goals & making a name for himself & going to sign for the Boro

Was he coming to partner Paul Wilkinson & challenge Bernie, or replace Bernie, time will tell

Lennie obviously fancied Andy Payton, who had just turned 24, enough to pay a club record fee & assist in the goalscoring charts, if one of the other strikers hits a sticky patch in a race to secure a place in the following seasons 1st ever PL

23rd November Andy Payton makes his debut with John Hendrie missing out due to an injury
After 3 minutes AP had put the ball in the net & what an explosive debut he had, a great way to start life at the Boro, a great through ball from Curtis Fleming, Payton ran in on goal, drew the keeper, rounded him & scored 1-0 to the mighty reds
I just got to the top of the South stand when Fleming passed & stood there next to the steward until the net bulged
Unfortunately Payton suffered a bad injury in the 1st half & was carried off to be replaced by Jamie Pollock
Bernie scored a further 2 goals, one in each half as Boro ran out 3-1 winners

Andy Payton scored 3 goals for the Boro, in 22 games, 9 starts, he was over the moon when he signed for us saying he had finally made it at a big club, unfortunately, it never really got going at the club, or was it the club ruining another striker

The team on Payton debut

Stephen Pears
Curtis Fleming - 8th games, 3 starts
Jimmy Phillips
Alan Kernaghan
Micky Mohan - 3rd game of the season
Robbie Mustoe
Bernie Slaven
Mark Proctor
Paul Wilkinson
Andy Payton
Stuart Ripley
Sub
Jamie Pollock

Just 3 goals in 22 games? Christ I remember thinking he was pretty decent.

I remember that goal pretty well. I was in the Holgate with my dad and grandad and thinking 'he looks some player'. Who knows but for the injury or being in Bernies shadow 'what could have been'.

Did we really only have 1 sub? I listed to Cooper on the legends and he said we regularly had a squad of just 14...madness!!

It's weird as despite all the games I have been too and more so debuts I still remember Paytons and Higgys away at Oldham (got pumped and if my memory serves me right Higgy had a great chance at 0-0?). That day also sticks in my memory as I had my car stereo knicked out of my old Ford fiesta popular plus in some dodgy Oldham backstreet.

He was one of two prolific strikers at the time, the other being Andy Cole at Bristol City, who signed for Newcastle of course.

I was thrilled when we signed him but he was never the same after that injury. Moved to Celtic the following summer.

Read John Hendrie’s book “Don’t Call Me Happy”, he says Payton was talented but absolutely loved himself.

I know what you mean erimus74, Boro has been a graveyard for many a striker over the years for some reason. He was a permanent signing by 6 clubs and had a better than1:3 record at 5 of them. At Boro it was worse than 1:6 albeit over only 19 games and he had his injury etc.

I was over the moon when he signed and thought we had a gem, especially after his opener. The Gypsy curse stuck again.

Watching those highlights it backs up my feeling that football was kind of less 'sophisticated' than it is today.

But boy was it fun [:D][:D][:D][^]

BTW current footie with it's ultra-strict 'systems' and work 'off the ball' is ok for the top teams, But for the rest of us dull dull dull

Sorry folks, I saw this when first posted and forgot to say this:

There's a decent podcast called "I had trials once", one episode of which guests The Padiham Predator. It's a good listen.

Amazing how bad our record is with big money strikers. Not sure if it goes back to devnport or Alf common.
