Let's never hear anything about them being a well supported club ever again.

Well supported clubs do not get 7k crowds in the FA Cup on a Saturday afternoon.

It's about time this myth was put to bed.

Once they have bought their (cheap)season tickets they don't like forking out for additional tickets. Hence low crowds for playoffs/ cup games. Not the 'massive' club they think they are.

They average over 10k more than we do per week, and they're in the division below.

They also have a population of about 280k and are not far from Newcastle.

Boro and Stockton have a population of around 340k, and no other big teams nearby.

That suggests they're better supported than us, in numbers, and as a percentage of the local area, and that's from the division below.

Don't really think we're in a position to throw stones, especially with falling attendances.

Wev you miss out the fact that large parts of South Tyneside and Durham also have Sunderland as their nearest club when you are talking about catchment area.

Also you don't hear Boro fans constantly droning on about having the best fans and crowd numbers.

They need to stay quiet in future as 7k for an FA Cup match on a Saturday afternoon is shambolic.

Sunderland have Wearside and Durham is pretty much a 50/50 split with them and Newcastle. What a nonsense comparison
City of Sunderland is twice the size of Boro. I don’t think with surrounding areas their catchment area is double but it won’t be far off

You lot need to stop crying, you sound like a bunch of little girls.

We take fans from Durham, Darlo, Hartlepool, Redcar, Guisbrough, Stokesley etc etc, it's all relative.

They're also in League 1 FFS, and they're getting 30k fans, which is more than some prem teams. Who gives a toss if they sell their tickets cheap, they have to as they're in a muck league. Fair play to their fans for still going when they've been ran very poorly, we would probably be down to

We're not well supported at home this season though, I've never claimed otherwise.
We had similar cup figures last season, but I've never seen somebody brag about the home support of Middlesbrough, whilst it happens constantly with Sunderland.

They give a different figure to officials.
And I'm certain that Middlesbrough attendances would be similar to Sunderland's if the tickets and offers were as fantastically priced.

Sunderland (including Houghton and Washington which many don’t class as Sunderland, a bit like Middlesbrough including Redcar it’s that far away but in the city boundaries) population is 240,000....Middlesbrough’s population (if you include South bank and Eston (unofficial Middlesbrough, is around 180,000.....Sunderland’s population (which is classed as the city) is 181,000....
Middlesbrough and Stockton have a population together of around 360,000....but like many have stipulated above, it’s more to do with the catchment area, Sunderland and Newcastle have a huge population of north and south Tyneside and all of Durham, this dwarfs Teesside and North Yorkshire catchment Middlesbrough draws from..

Their catchment area might be bigger than ours, but Newcastles does overlap a lot of it too. 360,000 people live within 5 miles of our ground, Sunderland don't have that.

Durham is 20km away, and just because there might be some fans in Durham, it doesn't mean they're going to the games.

Just let them crack on with it FFS, what they do is up to them. If they think they have the best fans, then let them think that, who cares? If they've got some good ticket offers going, then maybe we could learn something.

If Boro get sub 8000 crowds the w@nkers on ready to go will start a thread about what a sh!te tin pot club we are and there will be 100% agreement. Nobody will attempt tp defend us with facts about catchment area or financial hardship.

Jesus Christ, just boro, Billingham, Stockton, Thornaby, Redcar etc is 380k, the wider teesside area is 500-670k, depending how you look at it.

Wear side is 350k, which includes Washington, CLS, Haughton etc. Basically the density around our stadium and the local area is higher or similar, just look on a population density map.

Durham city only has about 60k people, they’re not all Sunderland fans, far from it. They’re mostly pensioners or students, who don’t give a toss. Also it would take about an hour to get there on a Saturday afternoon. I bet not many do that, the same as they wouldn’t for any team.

Newcastle and Sunderland do not share what is left from Teesside. They might have limited fans in Durham and crook etc, like how Man U have fans all over. Either way though, they’re not going to be close enough to get a season ticket or go week in week out, not in the most case anyway. If people do not have a local team, they are more likely to watch other sports or be a glory supporter.

Nearly all our fans live within a 10 minute drive, the geordie’s take Tyneside and anything north of that, even up to Berwick, which is miles away. Durham is miles and a chew from anywhere, so not many going from there in a taxi and out for a few beers.

Have any of you actually driven over Durham, bishop auckland, crook, consent, Proudhon, Morpeth, ashington, Berwick etc? These places are not ideal for football fans, as it would be a right ball ache week in week out. If you’re using these places as fans to skew the figures, then you’re asking them to travel for 3-10 times the time that our fans do.

They do alright considering their dogXXXXXX football and league, anyone in the uk (other than this board), would agree.

Considering I live in Coulby, which is probably as awkward as anywhere in boro to get to the game, I can get to south bank (where I work) going the mad mile way in about 10-15 mins, and walk from there.

OK, you leave nearer the ground than me, and I drive past Sid James and Stadium of Shiite but doesn't make me a better fan. I have often sat near fans who come from Thirsk, Pickering, Helmsley, Whitby, Saltburn, Stokesley. There are lots who drive up from South Yorkshire.

Both the grounds above that I mentioned are served by Tyne Wear Metro. Ours is not well served by public transport.

If anyone has any facts about distance travelled it would be interesting.

I haven’t included Darlo or Pools as these towns have more Mags and Sunlun fans than Boro.

North Yorks, the likes Northallerton etc have more Leeds and mags than Boro fans.

Based on catchment area, and per head of population, if Boro get a 10,000 crowd, then Newcastle would have to get around 28,000 to match it.

SAFC give away thousands of tickets and those that are on sale are cheap. That coupled with a massive area means they should get at least 30k.

In terms of Boro's so-called catchment area. It's correct to include Redcar and Billingham and everywhere in-between. It's also correct to not include Hartlepool and Darlington - those Towns are definitely not Boro.

Also where do all the North Yorkishire Boro get counted ?. Thinking about the likes of Harrogate, Northallerton etc. You cant just discount a full county, when you are happy going 50-60 mileswest for Sunderland, but bareley 8 miles south for Boro

As for North York’s, outside TS postcode’s, name one town that has more Boro fans then Leeds. Even Northerllarton has a big Man U supporters club. No Boro fans club as far as I know.

Here is a good test. The last time Boro got to Wembley, I would say no one supporters coach departed from out side a TS postcode. If I am wrong, name where it came from?

Now, how many Sunlun coaches to Wembley last season set off from DH, DL, and NE post codes?

I worked in Peterlee I was the only Boro fan, it was around 70% mackem, 25% Geordie and 5% Pools.

My cousin in Darlo said he was the only Boro fan in his school in 1981.

Boro's support is 95% Teesside or Teesside connected people, its very tightly concentrated, possibly in part because it was a very Industrial Victorian New Town, full of desperate immigrants from Ireland and poor Agricultural labourers from England and Scotland when the club started in 1876. This bonded the new locals together, but was not attractive to a wider fan base.

6876 figures look about right. I would argue County Durham is mainly Mackem and South Tyneside is mainly Geordie if Gateshead is included.

I rarely post on their board these days but there was a thread on there over the weekened regarding the low attendance, and I got tagged into it.

Of course, they were saying we would only average crowds of 7k in League One, but I posted and asked whether any Sunderland fan genuinely believed they'd average the same numbers if they had our ticket pricing, and when somebody asked what our prices are and I told them, they had no reponse - all I got was "Why can't you just accept our support will always be superior to yours", and the next thing the thread mysteriously vanished [:O]

They've loved dishing it out re attendances overs the years, mocking ours, but they can't take it back.
