What's your opinion on the Sarries salary cap breach? Is it worse/bugger than bloodgate?

I can see how upset Exeter will be. They've potentially lost 2 titles because of it.

The sums of money are small compared with allowable expenditure by football clubs. They can get attendances of over 80,000 but they are not the norm for professional rugby clubs, hence the salary cap. There is probably s greater competitiveness with the cap. Rules are rules and they broke them.

Yeah. I donít think, given the amateur history of the game, or the current commercial setup you can debate the need for the cap.

Itís just how actually bad was Saracens breaking it? I know a lot of teams used to stretch the rules to begin with which is why they recently tried to get their house in order. Itís weird, as a fan of their London rivals, we totally suspected them of breaking the rules. How can they have the biggest squad AND the most high profile players? That could of course have been jealousy but it always seems suspicious.

I mentioned Exeter, theyíve been hit really hard by it but also what about any team that wanted to sign or retain a player, but couldnít because they couldnít compete financially? Also the fact itís a sustained 3 year period.

IMO going back to my original question, even as a Quin, bloodgate was worse in a way. It had doctors, the team, coach and players all involved and the whole premeditated nature of it was terrible compared to breaking financial rules but the impact (especially given the loss to Leinster ) was significantly smaller than a three year sustained cheating .

Is it correct that only Exeter are currently running in the black? Pretty sure I read so earlier in the week. Seems there's a bubble on the verge of bursting.

We did cover this earlier in the week. You wonít get many people outside Saracens with any sympathy for Nigel Wray. Letís be honest a blatant breach of the rules by paying players through the back door and everyone knew it.

Iíd be surprised if they survive relegation this season. Time will tell if morale will affect their season but I can certainly see them losing at Gloucester today.

Championships lost to cheats. Players transfered, teams relegated. Prize money lost. TV revenue lost. European qualification lost.
I often wondered why Sarries were detested by other fans of English teams. I don't now.

The penguin that's almost certainly true. It's a big financial struggle in premiership rugby. Which makes it worse that it's the financially prudent chiefs that have been worst affected.

I don't think they'll get relegated this year but it'll be a struggle to get into europe.

Should be interesting to see the reaction of the opposition fans. In the genteel world of rugby union you can't get a worse place for abuse of opponents than the shed at Glaws. For once I'd encourage it. Although it has to be said, it's not the players fault.

Oh and apologies it was covered earlier. I missed the thread .

Leitrim theres always been something deeply unlikable about current sarries. Don't think it's just the salary stuff. They are just hard to warm to get no more than a grudging respect. And they have lost even that now.

I've met a few fans of different English teams, mainly at European fixtures and the one thing they all agree on is a hatred of Sarries.

Bloodgate brought long-lasting shame to the sport as a whole. Even though confined to one club it has besmirched the game and any claim to the moral high ground. It has become the default whataboutery response to any rugby fan's criticism of conduct in other sports. It had minimal impact on the integrity of the game as a competitive sport however. Saracens' financial chicanery undermines the basis for the competition(s) as a whole. Rivals either imitate their behaviour, leading to an unsustainable (and illegitimate) arms race, or become uncompetitive. In either case Saracens damage other clubs finances and sporting chances, and may find themselves deservedly sued.

That's a grotesque over reaction to blood gate. Confined as it was to one single event in one single match and being dealt with swiftly and severely.
