Why do people vote Tory?

Admittedly my knowledge of politics is limited but I have been taking more of an interest since the December GE was announced and I genuinely can’t understand why after the last 8/9 years anyone would vote Tory. Here’s why:

The national deficit has increased from £900billion in 2010 to £1.7trillion today.

Probable privatisation of the NHS

Food bank use increasing by over 1000%, the UK had 22 foodbanks in 2008, now it’s over 2000.

Number of homeless increased by 169%

NHS waiting list increased by over 70%

Child poverty increased by 50%

Crime increased by 30%

Etc etc etc!

Genuinely can’t understand how anyone could vote for them.

Desire to be on the “winning side” (is in it could be a nazi dictator offering Brexit and they would support them)

“I am also going to try and send my youngest child to private school to give her a better education” - this sums up the unfair society we are living in. Why isn’t
a state school education as good as a private school education, why is there this class divide between the haves and have nots. Why should those with a bit more money have an advantage over those that don’t . This is the Tory ideology, keep the working classes/masses in their place, throw them just enough crumbs to survive and make sure they stay down there [V]

Stick with forcing veterans into the gutter and lining pockets of private rogue landlords.

Stick with blaming the dead for the flamable cladding and blaming the fire service for the ethnic cleansing in an area surrounded by the rich in the richest Borough in UK.

Stick with handing cash to arms dealers and unscrupilous multi-nationals and giving partners on business trips 126,000 out of public money.

Nosmo, Lee, but isn’t the reason that Labour haven’t been able to ‘make themselves electable’ due to the media being Tory biased due to the tax benefits they receive from the Tory government.

Example below from borodaveinexile referring to Corbyn and the IRA, nobody refers to Boris Johnson’s meeting with Martin McGuiness. Also wasn’t Corbyn meeting with the IRA to broker peace / the GoodFriday Agreement?

Nhertsboro, do you think any one the things you mentioned would have more of an impact on the country and lives of most people than the privatisation of the NHS?

Why do people vote Tory?
Most people who vote Tory (or any other party) do so because they believe it is in the best interests of themselves and their families.

It seems to me that most people would welcome Labour's core policies with the possible exception of the proposed programme of nationalisation but they simply do not believe the that the proposed increase in taxes on very high earners and corporations will actually deliver the revenues required to pay for the increased spending leading to increased taxation of low to middle earners and/or increased borrowing followed by economic collapse. They are probably conscious of how quickly the living standards of the general populace of a country that was a badly run by a right wing elite can become very much worse when run by well-meaning left wing socialists e.g. Venezuela and Greece. It is, of course, the poorest in society who suffer most in such circumstances.

Why do people vote Tory?
I am answering the question not giving any opinions here. I have listed what they have traditional stood for. In recent years it has become more murky e.g. the Conservatives strongly supporting a Living Wage which is more a socialist policy.

Traditionally the Conservatives stood for lower direct taxes which particularly affected people currently earning £50k or more or people who think they will be earning that in the future. Before 2015 the marginal tax rate for some earning over £42k a year was 52% which to some people was too high for such a salary.

This is their view which is combined with a believe in lower Government spending which is backed with the believe a person can spend their own money more efficiently that giving as tax for others to spend on their behalf. The is sometimes called smaller government.

They have stood for home ownership and encouraged more personal saving from individuals. They belief this helps people have more a stake in their own country and being able to support themselves in harder times by having some savings.

They believe in capitalism which states that decisions based on the market will allocate resources most efficiently and thus society avoid shortages of goods and services that for example are currently seen in Venezeula. The opposite is when the public sector provide goods and services at rates often not in line with market rates and government forbid or restrict private competition.

They believe in strong armed forces and a strong police force, backed with strict law and order.

Remember I have stated what they believe in, what they do can be completely different as we have seen recently with Police Forces.

In general they believe in controlled and limited immigration. Obviously being in the EU affects this.

I have no agenda, voting for 3 different parties in the last 3 General Elections.

Another shout for David Milliband, we'd be in a much different position now.

As for Corbyn, he means well, he's not a terrorist sympathiser (wasn't it talking to the IRA that brought about the Good Friday Agreement?) but he's just not going to get the votes for a majority because people have been brainwashed into thinking he's "dangerous" by a media controlled by people who will have to open their wallets if he gets in.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of re-nationalising utilities and public transport, most of it is subsidised by government anyway and some of it (Arriva and EDF as prime examples) are owned by other foreign governments.

The immigration issue is the biggest problem I see for Labour and Corbyn is probably the last person who will stand up and say it needs to be brought down.

One thing that I do like about Corbyn is he was the first senior political figure to stand up and call the Brexit vote for what it was, a rejection of Globalism by people who felt marginalised, this was on the morning of the result while Cameron was packing his bags. Corbyn also said that Article 50 should be triggered immeadiately, it was the Tories that XXXXXXed about for the next 3 and a half years.

Public borrowing? Bigger threat.

Doing the best of your family is interesting.

If someone and their family has to attend state comprehensive schools and could never afford private medical and dental care. Someone who will need social care support from the state and whose main pension income will be from the State. I would say best for your family is not to vote Conservative.

You need high quality State Schools, well funded State medical and dental services, well funded social care and a decent state pension.

Obviously anyone getting additional welfare benefits such as tax credits, disability payments, pension credits, carers allowance should not vote Conservative if they want they look after their families based on short term self interest.

At the other extreme I can see from a self interest point of view why people earning £80k a year or more would vote Conservative or £120k combined income. Their family interest is reducing their taxes.

Also folks believing because they are pish poor that they are working class, worse still they soak up all these negative sterotypes and go out of their way to project them as something to be proud of. Being thick as fcuk, alcoholic and violent.

Why do people vote Tory?
Genuine typo should of read 60's.

Heres a snippet from a channel 4 investigation into media impact on general elections;

'The Sun was a Labour paper until 1979, when it came out for Margaret Thatcher, telling readers “Vote Tory This Time”.

The Conservatives won, but the Sun didn’t try to take the credit, probably with good reason.

Despite the unambiguous message to voters, a Mori poll the weekend after the election asked Sun readers which party the paper supported.

A third said the Conservatives, a third didn’t know and a third thought it still supported Labour.

Since then, whichever party the tabloid has backed at a general election has gone on to win, with the exception of 2010, when readers were urged to vote Conservative but did not give David Cameron a majority.'

So it supported Wilson and Callaghan to Labour victories, then switched and supported conservative through the thatcher and major years, switched back to labour for tony blair, then back to conservative in 2008 when brown took over (remember that unrelentless character assassination) and cameron got in a prime minister at the next election in 2010.

Since then despite an atrocious record it remains conservative and the anti-corbyn stuff is ramped up to max.

So why do people vote Tory? Because they are told to.

Look at Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland constituency - the Conservative votes particularly come from Saltburn Area and Guisborough Areas - the Tory MP has put his office in Guisborough. These two areas have Conservative councillors in the main. Incomes will be higher in these areas, home ownership too. I would guess there would be more Sun readers in Park End which is mainly Labour. In my opinion the Sun will tip over a couple of percentage, probably voters who were 50/50. The Daily Mail will have more affect because it does go a bit deeper into its politics and is more right wing in its political features. Its also picking up a lot of middle income voters who say don't rely on the welfare state, but are not wealthy people.

What I have noticed is that a lot of people in rural areas vote Conservative, some are maybe on low incomes but they feel the Conservatives represent the countryside way of life, particularly an attitude of self reliance. The South West of England past Bristol has only 1 Labour MP even though the Labour Party had 41% of the National vote.

On a personal level there’s 2 reasons that turned me
To conservatism compared socialism.
1. My ex wife was given free legal support despite working and receiving Csa payments from myself and made it very difficult via a solicitor going to court etc... to see my children. I had to pay. The conservatives stopped this process and ultimately the resistance stopped and I got to see my children again.
2. My parents got to buy their ex council house and have financially Domenic well ever since.
3. If yo look at the history of the left and right there’s no way you’d support socialism

The reasons people vote Tory are simple, they’re either:

1) Very wealthy and want to pay as little tax as possible, big business loves socialism for themselves and capitalism for the rest of us.

2) Middle-class people who have been convinced that they’re one of them.

3) Working class but have being successfully brainwashed into thinking they’ll make your life better and you’re a millionaire in waiting, so you should be suitably angry that millionaires and billionaires are being asked to pay more tax.

Why do people vote Tory?
For me, the reason not to vote Tory, is because their priorities are completely backwards to what the North East needs, their priorities are, in order:

Themselves
Their donors/ mates/ hedge funds etc
The very rich, as in earning over 500k
London
The South
The rich, as in earning over 100k
Their policies
Northern Ireland (because of the DUP prop up)
The Midlands
Those earning over 50k
The North West
Scotland
Wales
North East
NHS/ Police/ Teachers
Those in most need, ie homeless, using food banks, child poverty

I used to think that because I was a high earner in a big house, that the Tory's were best for me. But I've now realised that they may be very slightly better for me tax wise, but this is offset by how much the North East gets pummelled by them, and will get further pummelled by brexit. Then also, next to none of my family/ friends earn what I do, so overall my family/ friends would be at a massive loss, with Tories in charge.

Basically I'm voting for any legitimate party that will stop Tories from getting in, for a large gain for my family and friends, rather than a perceived gain for myself (which isn't actually a gain when our location is factored in). By Legitimate I mean Labour or Lib Dem, but as lib dem can't win my seat, it has to be Labour.

The whole Left v Right thing can, in very broad terms*, be reduced to Big Government v Little Government.

Generally the right believe that Government should step out and if people are good enough and aspirational enough they will succeed.

-The problem with this is that we are all different and to have a big winner you must have lots of big losers.

Those on the Left believe that Governments need to control economies so that people are protected and no-one is left behind.

-The problem with this is that when Governments take too much control it leaves people feeling stifled and we also find that when it goes wrong some are more equal than others

Corbyn is the same really, he’s a protester, and he’s good at it, that can’t be denied. He is good at fighting against ‘the man’. His whole career is built on that.

The problem is that if he finally becomes ‘the man’ himself he will be clueless. He has no answers himself he just shoots down everyone else’s. He’s a great protestor, but he’s not a leader.

Sounds like Boris, but he's not even a good protester.

Boris is just peddling May's crap deal, and he's the puppet of the billionaires and Cummings. He voted against his own part countless times, and his own party have had zero idea about what they've wanted to do for 3 years. They've ended up here by default, it's not been negotiated.

Not sure why this is 100% about Corbyn and Boris mind. They're both bad imo, but Labour at least tries to look after the public, public services and rest of the UK, where as the Tories just try too look after London and their billionaires.

No, this is how right wingers portray anyone with the temerity to suggest that society should help anyone out of poverty (which is obviously due to their lack of ambition/hard work/desire for an easy life). To suggest equality of opportunity is not some Maoist plot it is good economic sense. Right wing politics in this country is very much about maintaining the status quo allowing inherited wealth to perpetuate advantage through private schooling and a path into influential positions to continue the cycle. The example of the liar in number 10 should be enough to convince people that we need serious change in this country not a different old Etonian.

The 5 Nordic countries are run in this way and always top every survey for levels of well-being and happiness, because there is much less inequality

Or we could continue with the current sh*tshow but with much reduced workers rights, privatised health system and ever-widening gap between rich and poor

Why do people vote Tory?
Why are some people on here and the Tories using Labours potential nationalisation of the Rail and utilities as a stick to beat labour with?

Oh right, I get it now, that's because you want to have everything de-nationalised isn't it, just like the Tories are doing with the NHS, but won't admit it, as they will lose almost every vote from people who are hard up.

Just think about it:
Tories claim they are for the NHS (although with zero proof, and the nurses and doctors hate them with a passion) - giving someone £50 after you've taken £500, is not a gain.
They slate labours nationalisation ideas (but somehow are not going to sell off our NHS to USA, yeah ok....)

If you're old, a heavy user of the NHS or you're skint then you're taking a massive risk voting Tory, if you're not hedging your bets with private healtchcare already.

Just to add also, private healthcare costs a fortune to start when you're old, and it will not cover you in any instances of previous reportable instances.

So if you've got a ongoing condition, and the NHS gets sold off, then you will be paying that out of your own pocket, and without health cover. Your dugs will now cost more too, seeing as this will be a major part of any trade deal with the US and the US companies want to charge more.

They have already cut back the Police, Fire Brigade, Schools and Armed forces, so how long until those are de-nationalised too?

The Tories motto should be "Let's sell everything off, so we have no control", rather than the laughable "take back control".

I hope Tory voters like Trump as you're relinquishing control to him, rather than the imaginary control that the EU have now or in the future. The only reason the Americans put up with him is because he's putting america first, apparently. Although that isn't going to do us any good, as a trade deal will benefit them more than us, as they have a much greater power than us.

Utter nonsense.

The measure of "happiness" is a simple one. How happy are you? Dead happy, Quite happy, Happy, not very, P!ssed off, JRM. If happy people are living in a Nordic country there is a simple relationship.

Suicide is not a measure of happiness, it could show a lack of provision for mental health care, drug problems, drink problems, depression, etc. Ergo there is no proven relationship between cause and effect. As I alluded to it may simply be that the long Arctic nights are a contributory cause to the suicide rate?

Levels of happiness OR suicide rates cannot be directly attributable to living within the Nordic Model (or any model) however the Patriarchy Paradox can.

Happy or suicidal people may feel that way living in different circumstances.

The catalyst to both those feeling are multitudinous and not necessarily because of the way the economy is structured.

I would also suggest that people feeling suicidal are usually pretty unhappy.

Are you unhappy because we have a Tory Govt? Is that on your mind so much that it impacts your daily happiness levels?

My own view is that any other Conservative leader during this period would very likely have resulted in a victory for Germany with dire consequences. I'd be interested to hear of any views (including Grandad's) on any Labour politician at the time who would have done a better job than WC.

To be clear, I think the current Conservative Party's leadership is merely a poor shameless imitation of "New Labour" and bears no similarities to WC's administrations.

Why do people vote Tory?
Levels of happiness OR suicide rates cannot be directly attributable to living within the Nordic Model (or any model) however the Patriarchy Paradox can.

Very simply "The Patriarchy Paradox" is that in an egalitarian society, gender norms are actually reinforced, you don't get, for example, 50% female scientists or 50% male midwives. Now explain why that "renders much of Labour's advocacy around gender equality worthless". And why it has anything at all to do with Nordic "happiness".

Of course happiness can be directly attributable to the Nordic model, it is a very simplistic measurement. Are you happy? Where do you live? I suppose you can argue about what it means but it is easily tested for.

But you brought up suicide rates and then declared that they cannot be directly attributable to living in a Nordic country. Make your mind up.

Why do people vote Tory?
You obviously have absolutely no understanding of what The Patriarchy Paradox is.

I think you're being deliberately obtuse now.

I don't think anyone can miss the point so much organically.

Oh only one of us is struggling here Bruce. I'm beginning to understand why you never answer questions. You aren't capable of any form of intelligent debate. Instead you persist with the silly name calling "racist" you cry when someone mentions ham. You come on here to try to "give it" to us lefties and invariably end up losing your temper and getting banned again. Why bother? You deny being a Tory shill so I guess this is just a hobby for you?

@hmb

Why do you think PP is more selfish and dangerous than DA?

How could you realistically have a British Home Secretary who believes "Any victory against the British State is a victory for all of us"?

She'd be spending her entire tenure punching herself in the face[:O]

a multitude of reasons:

a - they are very rich
b - they are moderately well off and fear losing that status, even if the reality si that they won't
c - they have malleable minds, particularly around emotive subjects
d - they misconstrue that speaking posh means they are intelligent and thus are the best people in charge
e - belief that there are those born to a higher purpose than others
f - people whipped into fear that anything left leaning is communism
g - family have always voted that way
h - fear that the idea of reaching middle class income will dissapear if Tories are voted out
i - sociopathy; no empathy for fellow man, so wanting the lowest tax possible
j - plain stupidity

But do you find it more dangerous than installing someone who actually declares that:

"any victory against the British State is a victory for all of us"

in a position governing the British State?

I think the reason people vote Tory is because there has been a shift of priorities in this country since I was a child.

My short adult life and consecutive Tory/Tory Coalition governments, have shown me the majority of peoples interests in this country ranging from highest to lowest priority are:

Themselves > Pets > “the 1%” > Israel > Children > Other family > The NHS> Crime> Disabled > The Poor > The homeless > Muslims

I dare say that most people don’t think about Israel on a day to day basis - not sure how that made your list?

My personal view is that a lot of people actually vote Tory as there is no credible opposition at present. A lot in the labour party don’t believe in Corbyn , they belong to the same party but seem to lack and form of unity.

It's not "what we talk about on a daily basis" list though is it.

It is a list of what they consider most important when casting their vote.

For example it is my opinion, that voters are now more irked at alleged antisemitism than they are at the fact people live on the street.

Can I just check I'm getting this right?

Are you saying that people in the UK prioritise their pets, the richest 1% and Israel before their own children?

And Israel before the NHS?

Is that what you honestly think?

mikeyyyy Posted on 08/11/2019 14:57

Poor Old Mutt
No, I am saying animal welfare stories get people more up in arms more than child poverty. I am not suggesting parents love their children more than their pets. I bet some do but no.

I put Israel ahead of the NHS because papers see antisemitism and they're outraged and it gets reported to the hilt. NHS struggling and possible privatisation gets a figurative shrug of the shoulders.

I wouldn't know what to prove wrong.

First you referred to 'people's own interests' then 'what they consider most important when casting their vote' and now you're talking about what the media covers most.

I just think you're a bit confused.
