What a difference (just over) a year makes!

14 months ago we stuffed Sheffield United 3-0 at home. Tonight, they're playing arsenal in the Premier League with 9 points from their 8 games (15th). While we have 10 from our 12....and are sitting in 21st in the Championship. Amazing.

All that said, I still think that Sheffield United will struggle to stay in the PL. I also think that we'll come good, and stay up, so maybe in another 12 months we'll be level again.

Also, (in my opinion) we've had a bit of bad fortune this season, and could easily have been sitting on 5 points more than we are currently.

Time will tell.....

Aye. Watching the game now... you could well be right. They look pretty decent.

I reckon the 3 teams currently in the relegation zone are the ones who will go down.
Though I could see Brighton dropping instead of Newcastle.

Chris Wilder. Excellent manager. Strong defence. More equipped than we were in 2016.

Good manager with a bit of nous about him. Team plays with a high tempo and they can mix it up. Hope they stay up. Proper club.

Sheffield United deserved the win tactically Wilders a very intelligent manager always watching changing systems, to easy to stereotype him , you dont get promoted in a 46 game season if you cant play football. Credit to them no moaning from me.

He knew he was playing pace tonight so he wanted to deny our two wingers time and spac, to deny them the damage we did to frankfurt on the break. His centre halfs overlapping was intelligent.

if you notice it was a similar job he did to Crystal Palace when they won 1-0 who also have fast athletic wingers.

We were to passive tonight, did not move the ball fast enough, emery should have been brave and played our best full-backs in Tierney and Bellerin to pin the excellent Baldock back. We are still better than when Wenger left but the away form has to improve and the team need to be willing to mix in more on the road. The great thing about the league is not everybody plays one way.

Its hard to call who will go down this year the league, no awful teams like Huddersfield were last year or teams shattered bby infighting like Fullham. Norwich ship to many so they might fill one spot, the other two will be two unlucky teams this year for me, Newcastle have to pass the ball better as well.

Why isnt he playing Tierney and belerin at full back.

Both brilliant

I have no idea

they have only just come back, but they are fabulous full-backs.

I believe Tierney has the ability to be the best left-back in the league when he gets fit , pace to burn and I watched him for years and think he is outstanding. Watching Baldock tonight showed me how important that dominant full-back is to the course of a game.

Emery is caught between trying to make us toughter to beat and being more expansive, I am willing unlike some to give him time though, this seasons a big one for him as he has yet to sign a new contract.

Cuthbert - we don't even need to go back so far to observe the opening gulf.

Just eight months ago, this year, we were up against them at Bramall Lane with a game in hand, with them on 55 points to our 51.

D_A - valid point mate. I guess it was the fact that we beat them 3-0. I never really thought we looked like winning that game at their place.

However, as you point out, before that game we were effectively on a par.

Just looked at the team that beat them 3-0

Only players who are not in current squad that played were Flint, Downing and Braithwaite (George played but is now injured)

What a difference 3 great players/one manager (delete as applicable) makes [;)]

Also interesting that quite a few people seemed to think that Flint / Downing were two players holding us back too.

McGoldrick up front who came from Ipswich on a free. Billy Sharp came on towards the end too. Basham played in league one for Blades with Fleck. Unbelievable really

Spot on HULLRED66.

Fleck doesn't half have a shot on him too. Absolutely SMASHED two yesterday. He didn't score them, but certainly puts his boot through it.

Quite a young side and a lot of them have come up through the ranks (league 1 and 2) together. I think that makes a massive difference in terms of morale and support of the fans.

We'll get there...

Full backs (or wing backs, or whatever they are) Baldock and Enda Stevens picked up from MK Dons and Pompey respectively. One cost around £600k, the other free, I think.

Just to add when the spirit is formed it can be quite a force.

Take Norwich under Paul Lambert won league one, then the championship got promoted with pretty much the same team, then stayed up in the prem and beat the big teams and grant holt scored fifteen in a season. Before it all fell apart a bit over money etc.

Bournemouth did the same with Howe to a extent if with more money to spend on players. Cook ,Smith, Daniels and Francis are all still there from those early days
from league one.

Point is under Wilder, you can see the Sheffield United lads love playing for him because of the journey they have been on, its not always that common in the modern game.

I lived in Lpool for a while so often went to watch Tranmere.

They went up out of the National League and then with pretty much the same 11 smashed league 2...

All about spirit and momentum

Another thing is making sure you do not lose that promotion spirit, look at QPR dumping their promotion team to buy the likes of Boswinga and Samba and look how that turned out. Fullham last year the same, fights in training etc.

I think eventually Wilder will move on, the chairmen they have now I wouldn't trust completely not to mess it up, and I sense he may end up at a Everton etc down the road.

Disagree mate, he's a blade through and through and I would imagine he will see himself replicating Eddie Howe at establishing them as a premier league club

Ideally, he would your right as he loves the club, just not sure considering developments with the new chairmen whether that relationship will work long term.
