This day 1976 - We are top of the league
As a 16 year old in the next few days back then I was old enough to see we had a good team & after years of listening to the older generation that 'the Boro will always let's you down son' I thought we were gunna win the league

Maybe we should have, maybe if big Jack had seen the bigger picture & recruited at the right time then champions we could have become

Ah, No1 this day back then:
ABBA - Dancing Queen

Great times Erimus.

We finished 12th in the league and Big Jack resigned in April 1977.

I had forgotten that he returned as caretaker manager in 1983/84.

They certainly were Stigmata [^]

We just didnt score goals, just look at our defence, midfield, upfront was so poor, we eeded a big signing, or two
In fact the late, great Willie Maddren was playing each week with any training sessions, just jog around Ayresome Park when training was carried out, which proved his outstanding ability

Really happy times, football, and Boro in particular was everything (just about). I could mix it with all the Leeds Utd supporting kids at school and be proud of our identity that Big Jack had created, Boro were the team that nobody looked forward to playing.

Great days.

We needed a quality centre forward to replace Willey as he was still a young lad, and Duncan McKenzie or Tony Currie to replace Boersma who really wasn't very good, and we would have won the league that season.

Foggysfplandiet3, yes Boersma our record signing at the time & IMHO I only seen him play one outstanding game, when beating arsenal 4-1 in the FAC

This day 1976 - We are top of the league
Not that we were getting carried away but hundreds of (mainly young) fans refused to leave the ground at the end of this game until the players had come back out and acknowledged their cheers of "We are the champions".

And not that Norwich manager John Bond was bitter but he said after the match that it was a tragedy for football that we were top of the league with the style of football we played. He also said that if we got into Europe our style of play would see us getting taken apart.

Trivia question - the previous time we had been top of the league before this was Christmas Day - but in which year?

I think Boersma was a better player than his time with us would suggest but he suffered from the same problem as players who have joined us more recently have had after joining Boro of being shoe-horned into a position that didn't suit him. At Liverpool he played as a striker and was unfortunate to be there at the same time as Toshack and Keegan. With us, he played as a striker in his debut against Manchester United but Big Jack then decided to use him in a midfield role that he was never right for. Breaking the bank to buy a Liverpool striker and then playing him in midfield when a decent forward could have won us the league seems an odd decision in retrospect.

The Club didn't "break the bank" to buy Boersma - that was the point.
He was appropriately priced, but just not very good.
The Club needed forward quality to match the excellence further back.

Great post erimus and a reminder that Middlesbrough FC can be very much more than plodding along at the bottom of the Championship - with or without Steve Gibson.

When I said "break the bank" it was maybe the wrong expression - what I was referring to was that it was a big signing by our standards at the time. My point was that we may have had a different opinion of him had we played him regularly as a striker. He may not have been the world's best striker but he was better than Alan Willey.

9 games
6 goals [?]
Boring, boring boro......
It used to be a thing - get the defence sorted first[?]
Liverpool built their long run from the back too.

I remember being quite excited when we bought Boersma.
Same when we bought Davenport.
Never quite worked out tho.

I was excited when i saw the Gazette billboards propped up next to the paper seller, screaming out, “Boro Sign Liverpool Ace”. I thought it was David Fairclough and it turned out to be Boersma. [sad]

McMordie: i remember my brother was told by some Liverpool fans he was talking to that Boersma could only play as a striker and was not a midfielder so he may well have been played out of position.
