Hmm. I'm not sure it was used in the early days of fantasy football Capy. I remember it being used in the NBA all the time in the mid-90s and wondering why it was never used in football, and then it crept in.

Even if it was used in fantasy football, it didn't creep into mainstream footballing vocabulary (used by pundits etc) until a bit later, as I remember it.

'Crying out for pace' and 'Pace' in general. Can't remember so much emphasis being put on it a few years ago?

'Two banks of four' again, might just be me but seems quite a new term?

Not strictly in keeping with the thread but 'formations' in general. As above, I don't recall so much emphasis being put on formations in the 80s/90s. I certainly don't recall so much scrutiny put on them as they do now.

And the term that really annoys me - 'we go again'!! [:(!]

these have all been part of football for donkeys.

pace - the british game up until the late 90s was all about pace and power

recovery - has been in the game forever

false 9 - has been in european football for some time, and Bergkamp effectively played this role in the late 90s for arsenal with Henry coming from out wide. It's why they were so good in that period. They doubled up on the RB and left the CBs with no one to mark

number 10 - imported from europe in the mid 90s, but had been in europe since 70s

"Transitioning through the phases." -- it would help if you didn't mix your terms up [cr]

a) A transition is a switch of possession: a positive transition is gaining possession, a negative transition is losing possession.

b) I think you are mixing that term up with playing through the thirds. I.e. moving the ball from defence, to midfield to attacking parts of the pitch, via passing moves rather than launching it long.

c) phases - as in the 4 phases of play - in possessions; out of possession, positive transition and negative transition

Well done welding 3 different football phrases into one though

DNA & Philosophy are a major part of why our country is starting to look like a decent team again. Philosophy has been used for probably 15 years, but DNA only half of that. Check out the England DNA which is the origin of the football term.

Think you're missing the point. No one is saying these positions are new, but that the terminology is, or at least wasn't widely used until relatively recently.

I don't think anyone described Bergkamp as a false 9 at the time. Even if they did, Henry didn't join arsenal till 99 so it fits into the time period of the thread.

Correct on DNA, the FA and England started it.

It only bothers me when West Ham and Newcastle managers are like "It's in the DNA of this football club to play attacking football" - is it really, or have you just got loads of highly paid mercenaries, ultra-deluded fans and played nice football once in the 60s?
