Joker

No threads on this yet? Have to remedy that.

Went to see the Joker film at the cinema over the weekend.

Absolutely fantastic. Joaquin Phoenix does a great job all the way through, hard to watch but also very difficult to look away from.

It's technically a superhero film, but it's absolutely nothing like one in many ways. No CGI, no long action scenes, etc. In fact, I can't think of a single explosion in the whole film. Instead it's a very dark, brooding film. A war of attrition between the world and the main character's limited grasp on reality. Think Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Falling Down.

Excellent work.

Yep best film of the year for me, fantastic, hopefully this will wake up film studios and we'll see more films with story rather than these mind numbing PG CGI fests, looks like it's going to kill at the box office.

Bit of a stir today for using a gary glitter track in the film soundtrack

Looking forward to seeing it.

However, lot of bad press today due to the fact they used a Gary Glitter song in one of the scenes.

Probably the best film I've seen all year. A disturbing look at a mans decent into madness. Joaquin Phoenix is absolutely brilliant.

I know people are kicking off about Rock N Roll Part 2 being used, but it worked for me.

I was really looking forward to seeing it and had purposely avoided watching any trailers or reading about it.

I’m actually a little disappointed - I thought it was ok only.

Joker
I thought it was a phenomenal acting performance but a pretty dull film. Half of the movie is him dancing and usually in slow motion. Seen worse but hoped for more given all the hype and buzz.

Terrible film, too dark for its own good. I can see why some might like it but not for me.

Joker
Having read nothing about it and hearing just a few snippets I expected a rather dark superhero movie but what I got was a slightly upbeat taxi driver! As a stand alone it was ok only - overhyped for me!

US media were poking enough sticks I can't help but feel they're somewhat disappointed with the all the free publicity they gave this film with no scandal to report about in return.

As a standalone film it was great.

This Joker couldn't handle Batman though, he'd XXXXXX his pants

Tend to take reviews with a pinch of salt.

Haven't seen it yet but I'm curious. Does the fact that it's set in the Batman universe (i.e. Gotham City) make any difference to the film or is it just a bit of a wheeze to get more people to go and see the story of a man turing to crime as a result of mental disintergration?

Joker
Makes no difference whatsoever.

Joker
I don't want to give much away but that's not really what happens. It's set in Gotham, the familiar faces of the Waynes are there. There is unrest etc. in the city. Batman isn't really a superhero in the superpower sense, unless wealth is a superpower, so it doesn't require a superhero vibe. It's grounded in reality unlike the Marvel stuff. It has to be in Gotham and it has to be Joker for the film to work.

Maybe it could work as a standalone film outside of the Batman universe but I think the fact that it is a familiar character, from a new angle, in a familiar world is the reason they don't have to spend too much time world-building because we already know a lot about Gotham so it can concentrate on the story.

Just seen it. Absolutely fantastic film. Cant understand why people are hating on it. I suspect its not comic book enough for the die hard fans. Had a lot of King Of Comeby in there too i thought.

Joker
Just watched this tonight and I've got mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, it's an absolutely stunning portrayal of one mans descent into not only madness, but a total loss of humanity by Phoenix.

On the other hand, I think it tries a little too hard to include itself in the Batman universe.

I think that Phoenix's performance was a perfect compliment to the one given by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Both characterisations seemed to be cut from the same cloth, unlike other portrayals where there was little depth to them (I'm looking at you Suicide Squad).

Joker
I think it was a stunningly good film.

Hardly any special effects, limited actions scenes, probably why some people dislike it. However it's good old fashioned proper storytelling. Domme of us don't need excitement and explosions to enjoy a story.
Phoenix was excellent in it too. I found some bits genuinely uncomfortable to watch. Which is kind of the point.

Again, that was kind of the point. This wasn’t a 100mph action movie. It was a classic, old fashioned proper story telling.

Fantastic film and a world away from the DC rubbish that's been peddled about by Snyder and all that lot.

Darker than Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy and a different take.

Great insight in to mental health problems which at this point in time is poignant and synonymous with topical debate on the poor support of mental health sufferers.

I think this discussion highlights the importance that the arts can have in the direction that society takes.

You get genuinely insightful, story driven works like Joker that stand in stark contrast to the mentally unchallenging celebrity guff that seems to fill the TV schedules.

Information and insight are still the greatest threat to power and the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.

Even if the only thing you take away from this movie is a greater understanding of the problems that mental health poses to millions every day then it's a resounding success.

I never known Joaquin Phoenix do a bad movie. Has carved a career playing complicated, geeky, sometimes menacing, characters.

Check out a couple of movies from early in his career before he became massive time with ‘Gladiator’ ‘Signs’ and ‘The Village’ ‘We own the Night’ etc

‘8mm’ which I have covered on here, and ‘The Yards’

In 2013 starred in another movie which I thought was his finest hour, playing Theodore Twombly in ‘Her’

I haven’t seen ‘Joker’ but have heard it is a brilliant albeit dark watch.
