Thailand is the other option!

Havenít done it - mate did tho for two weeks and said it was beautiful but all a bit samey.
Spoke to a travel agent once who said Mauritius and Maldives were preferable.
Done them both
Mauritius will keep you occupied for two weeks
Personally tho Iíd do Sri Lanka then Maldives as a multi centre holiday.
Sri Lanka is just awesome then you can kick back and relax

Paradise but more to do in Thailand.

The destination took a bit of a hit in 2012 when a newlywed went for his morning dip and was fatally attacked by a shark (allegedly a Great White)

Full of Hooray Henrys and Harriet's enjoying some quality time before the misery of marriage kicks in.

Just sayin...

Would you still be comfortable with Sri Lanka now 1finny (genuine question)?

A mate loved Seychelles, but look into seaweed issues at times of year - they vary by island by time of year.

Another mate loves Maldives - but he's loaded and only goes to one tiny island all the time. I think I'd go stir crazy there.

We love Mauritius, especially north west where it is significantly sunnier and drier than the south and east. Mauritius is much bigger and more populated. I love the diversity there and it is a beautiful island to drive around with unique rock formations and landmarks.

Not been but wife's family are all from there. From what they tell me, its pretty much guaranteed weather and the seafood is good, but as a tourist its very expensive. I guess if you love tropical island weather you'll enjoy it, but not everyone does. Plan to get around to going one day in the not so distant future.

Seychelles, Mauritius etc all a bit fancy and less variety and things to do than say Thailand. Great variety in Thailand - from beach to jungle to city , friendly people and a great culture.

Iíd be fine with Sri Lanka now - probably more so because the value will be better [;)]
Appreciate others would take a different view and worry about the risk.
Other than those idyllic islands mentioned Iíd argue few places are risk free.

I've been to the Seychelles a few times and always stay at the Northolme Hilton in Mahe. The food is great and it has it's own beach. I usually try in go about November or February which may be a touch rainy but the Seychelles is always 30 degrees so it's great.

Attractions are the rain forest and beaches especially the Beau Vallon.
I have no trouble passing a couple of weeks there . None at all, and no one will be trying to kill you. [:D]

Well Im going on Saturday for 12 nights so will find out. We are island hopping to 3 islands spending 4 nights on each so there should be some variety. Done the Maldives, Mauritius, Thailand, Vietnam and Bali (and islands) also. All are amazing but for some reason I found Mauritius the least excising. Maldives is jaw dropping but really only if you like snorkelling and diving as if you pick the right house reef you will never be out of the water, simply stunning. Thailand, Vietnam and Bali have loads to do and the variety is amazing from Bangkok to the islands, Halong Bay or Ubud in the mountains of Bali. Should also say that I thought that the people of Cambodia were amazing and so humbling. Siem Reap was brilliant. I think you cant go wrong with any of them to be honest

I have been to Cambodia but wasnt that impressed really. Siem Reap was amazing but apart from that just thought it was a boring version of Thailand, although I did go in the rainy season so the humidity was a pain in the XXXXXX.....

The Maldives are worth a visit. You really are in the middle of nowhere though. The island I was on only had one telly. Still worth a trip though.

Why not.
First and foremost - great value and the time difference is no problem.
You have all sorts - the buzzing city of Cape Town, Safari, Beach, stunning scenery down the cape and........those vineyards are to die for.

We loved it and will prob go back.

South Africa is pretty amazing as 1finny points out . Given the choice I would go on safari to South Africa every year. Itís just an amazing country with so much variety!

Much better than sitting on some fancy pricey beach somewhere for two weeks.

Fatcat,

Can you advise on a good place for a Safari?

We were planning on a few days in Cape Town and then drive the Garden route and have a couple of nights in a Safari Park!

Are they all pretty similar?

Some unbelievable places to stay and eat - canít remember where we stayed (Franschoek) but you will be spoilt for choice.

Yes - spent the last 3 nights in Camps
Great fun - some lovely sea food restaurants too
You will enjoy it - a good place to kick back

The other thing we did was hired a local guide for the township visits (tours by locals) and to tour the cape

Been many times to RSA - wife brought up there - but never been a massive fan. I hate the obvious security concerns which are getting worse, but well covered up.

Worth going to Capetown for Table Mountain, Camps Bay, Apostles and down to Cape.Give False Bay area a miss.
Worth going to Wine lands nearby, especially Franschhoek which as 1finny says is beautiful. Stellenbosch good too and the wineries between and around are fantastic in some jaw dropping scenery.
Garden Route worth a go, Knysna, Plettenburg Bay and Natures Valley best. Get good accommodation, especially if you go to Hermanus.
Nothing very worthwhile about PE, other than it is 50k from Shamwari Reserve which is outstanding. If you can stretch to it, you wont regret it.

I do like the North Coast up from Durban - completely different sub tropical landscape. Umhlanga up past Ballito and beyond has some lovely spots. Not far to Zulu battlefields from there either.
Durbs is to be avoided, but I just hate the SA cities.
South Africans we know all suggest Mozambique as best for beach and getting away unspoilt.

Joberg for me is an awful place. I've enjoyed staying with friends there and bush trips north west of Joburg up to Sun City.
In fairness, Ive not done north east of Joburg and up to Kruger, but I just wouldnt fancy the crowds by comparison to Shamwari where we've been spoilt.

RSA is worth visiting, but get your accommodation right and think hard about your travel routes.

Re safari parks the most obvious one is Kruger national park where you will see lots of animals but can be quite crowded with tourists . I will send you the name later where I went but it Was a managed safari park
