Sounds as though Cummings and his gang haven’t found a way to circumvent the law after all!

That's how much he's trusted.
But it seems that the car of Foreign Minister of Hungary as been seen around various ministries recently.

Being cynical maybe they are offering sweeteners to a country to reject the deal.

He can request the extension, therefore obeying the law and silencing the remainers. But it only takes 1 country to reject the extension and we are out anyway.

Would you put it past Johnson and Cummings not to approach it that way ?

In Hungary for instance 70% of the population wish to stay in the EU.
But who knows what could happen.

This realyl does reinforce Corbyn's position as the only sensible way forward. Negotiate a deal, perhaps a "Norway" style deal and put it to a second referendum. A Norway style deal against remain, that deal should appeal to a decent cross section of those wanting to leave (and maybe over time further divorce ourselves from the EU) and those who would like to remain but acknowledge that there is a desire to leave.

The hard option of a No Deal Crash Out does no-one any favours (other than currency speculators with an inside track on Government intentions perhaps?)

If he asks for an extension with the hope he gets a majority it will he can spend 5 years trying to put things right.

Three years later not even the advocates of Brexit are trying to sell this any more, now we are told this (pain) is "a price worth paying".

The thing about BJs lies is that they are so blatant, so easy to verify. Same with his complete 180 degree changes of opinion just because it'll benefit his career.

The thing is, the boldness of the lying is something Trump has proven you can get away with. I don't blame him for the lying and changes of opinion, he's a careerist politisian and it's clearly working for him.

I do genuinely, honestly find it utterly staggering and mystifying that members of the public continue to support him. It's blatantly clear that he's in it for himself and his rich mates and prepared to do anything to meet his ends. Yet some of the average man on the street still back him. That is one fact I find entirely perplexing. A man is lying to you, doing things that will make YOU poorer and you still back him? I just can't grasp it

As for Boris he is just trying to play the hand he has been dealt despite spoiling tactics from all around him. And yes, I hated Thatcher but I would trust her more than Johnson. You might not have liked her and God knows I abhorred her, but she said what she was going to do and led the country as a Leader not as a coniving oaf with an over exaggerated belief in himself as some sort of Churchillian "cometh-the-hour-cometh-the-man" figure when he is simply a buffoon.

Fools like yourself will never accept that the only people getting richer because of extreme capitalism are the already rich and a very few lucky souls, that "trickle down" economics is a lie, that Entrepreneurs don't "create wealth" (they hoard it). Your beliefs are based on greed, not a concern for those around you. You must be a similar age to me so you know full well the origin of the quote "there is no such thing as society". So stop being silly and pretending you don't. Or you REALLY don't in which case you should leave the discussion.

I believe that the Tory Party to be (this is a quote from Charlie Brooker) "...an eternally irritating force for wrong that appeals to bigots, toffs, money-minded machine-men, faded entertainers and selfish grasping simpletons who were born with some essential part of their soul missing"

My only question to you would be which category do you see yourself in?

The Tory Party have NEVER been the friend of the working man. You can argue that Labour have not always acted in their best interests either but the balance of good to harm is definitely in their favour. As you moved south in 86 you will have been aware of the destruction wrought upon the North East and elsewhere by Conservative policy and yet you think that this oaf, this liar is worth defending?

If all you can say is "they all lie" don't bother, that is just a cop out to cover your lack of thought.

FT reporting today that HMRC assessment sets out cost of admin burden on business even before tariffs of £15 Billion a year just for the change in paperwork if there is a no deal.

Makes you wonder what the full cost of a no deal would be? Trillions probably. The Guardian are saying Government debt would have to reach the highest for 50 years to pay for it.

And that demonstrates a complete lack of understanding FatCat. It's not my fault that you don't understand. You should perhaps read about it a bit.

No order was made against the PM to comply with the Benn Act because no order was necessary. To characterise the case as having been 'thrown out' on the basis it had 'no merit' is just inaccurate I'm afraid.

The court held that no order was necessary on the basis that number 10 gave an express promise to comply with the Benn Act, contrary to every political statement coming out of number 10. The government and Johnson have boxed themselves into a corner. Essentially, the government's assurances are legally sufficient so no order is required. It's a brilliantly clever judgement actually and one that can only really be interpreted as a success.

I don't know that it's a brilliantly clever judgement. Admittedly I don't know the full particulars of the case, but it reads to me as it was a pointless waste of time and money. They have basically asked for the equivalent of "Make it illegal to break the law".

It's not illegal to break "the law" but it is illegal to break "a law" and depending on which law you break it will already carry a punishment so you don't need to add another.

Merkel has basically said no this morning so that's the end of any deal under this administration. He will now have to go for the extension.
I would imagine there will be a November election and the Tories will campaign basically as the Brexit party in order to nullify Farage.
They will target the Labour heartlands where around 70 percent of Labour constituencies voted leave and it wouldn't suprise me in the least if they won with a working majority and we are out by the end of the year on WTO terms.

of course you would interpret it as a success and it kind of is in that the assurances have been given in writing, but my point is this - given the Benn act is law, then not abiding by it and not sending the letter would be breaking the law. We all know that so why do we need another court case to confirm that s the case and an order to tell BJ he must obey the law by sending the letter. It just seems the opposition are panicking because despite the law BJs posturing suggest he may break it, however until he has broken it the courts realise there is nothing for them to do.

The assumption is that a Labour held constituency is that it was the Labour voters therein that voted for Brexit, whereas the figures seem to suggest that less than 1/3 of Labour voters in the 2017 GE voted leave, a figure of around 3 million voters, so whilst a significant figure it's nowhere near the numbers quoted by Farage and co.

The Brexit Party will, I suspect have a bigger impact on the Conservative vote than Labour vote, there's the unknown of the 20 odd constituencies where sitting Conservative's were sacked and talk of other defectors to the Lib Dems in the coming weeks.

Obviously the campaign will have a massive impact on the result of any Election but I have never known the UK political situation in such disarray.

Maybe that’s it. We know Boris can;t be trusted. So it’s probably best to have everything in place to stop him breaking the law, which is something you wouldn’t put past him.

AM. I think that is true of the labour vote as a whole but not in each individual constituency. The labour voters in metropolitan areas like London are much more likely to be remain voters than labour voters in the northern leave voting constituencies.

If I were a Labour MP in the midlands and the north i'd be slightly uneasy. If Farage and Johnson do decide to make some sort of electoral pact i'd become very uneasy.

It was brilliant because it obviated the need to make an order (which would have been used as a political weapon) yet still got the categoric assurances from the government that not only would they uphold this law but also (and this is the important part) that they wouldn’t make any attempts to frustrate its purpose.

By FatCat’s reasoning no injunctive orders would ever be required. More rubbish. The reason the order was sought (and why the assurances are important) is that number 10 have been explicitly saying that it won’t comply and, more importantly, that it had plans to frustrate the Benn Act.

As per Aileen McHarg it was “a technical loss for the petitioners . . . but a de facto win. They forced the government to give assurances that it will comply with the Benn Act."

Been said many times but the next election will be about functioning alliances.

Many people in places like here would never vote Tory but are sick enough of TLP to vote TBP.

There are also a lot of traditional 'One Nation' Conservatives that will jump to the Lib Dems too, there are very blurred lines at present on the political landscape.

Only circumstantial evidence but a lot of the local Facebook and social media anti Labour posts are from people who wouldn't vote Labour anywhere, I have a couple of Conservative supporting mates who are members of a Deselect Turley Group, as an example of how things can be skewed.

For me no overall majority is by far the most likely outcome of any GE in the forthcoming months.

Adi opinions are opinions - you don’t have to label everybody else’s as rubbish and yours as fact they are just opinions.

I think any gain by the case they raised is minor and is just a way to try to assert more control than is necessary over the gvt.

Can you point me to interviews where the gvt did say they would try and frustrate the purpose of the Benn act?

No FatCat, mine is not opinion but legal fact. You claimed that the case had been thrown out because it lacked merit. That is legally incorrect. The order sought was not made because of the undertakings made by the government.

And you don't need me to provide you with links to the multiple ministers that have said we will be leaving on 31st October come what may surely? And what about the 'sources in number 10 that keep putting stuff like this out:

"“The Act imposes narrow duties,” says the “Number 10 source,” adding: “Our legal advice is clear that we can do all sorts of things to scupper delay which for obvious reasons we aren’t going into details about. Different lawyers see the “frustration principle” very differently especially on a case like this where there is no precedent for primary legislation directing how the PM conducts international discussions.”"

All of that nonsense was sorted out in the case you claim was pointless because of the government's undertakings. It was vital to secure those written legal assurances simply because they could not be trusted to comply with the law and/or not try to frustrate it by nefarious means.

So, sorry and all that but this isn't about your opinion having equal weight to mine. You're just wrong.

Adi is right.

When will Brexiters finally start listening to experts?

If you'd bothered to follow David Allen Green you'd have seen the following exchange

Kathryn Purkis : If I were Lord Keen I'd be terrified reading para 43...on his own express submissions...An officer of the court etc. This looks like a brilliant bit of fencing by the court. Johnson can't say 'the evil lawyers made me'

David Allen Green : Agreed. This is a far more dangerous judgement than many realise.

Spiders : Can you explain a bit more for us legally ignorant types?

Kathryn Purkis : Well, the court has overtly (to those in the litigation business) put the professional probity of the govt legal team on the spot. The judge has said that they have effectively given undertakings to the court, and because they are top drawer lawyers, they'll have cleared that unequivocally with their client. The reference to being an officer of the court is to the obligation inherent in that role to be *honest* whatever your client tries to get you to do. The judge is alluding to it being a contempt if these undertakings are breached. Sweetest of all is the fact that making the applicants nominal losers, when in fact they have achieved the required outcome, has the huge side benefit politically of optics that do not allow anyone to say the courts are elitist enemies of the people.

Even if Johnson bins the letter he is supposed to send, the EU will offer an extension anyway. It just depends whether he wants martyrdom or not. I think not because gaol would be career limiting.

Exactly what he wants. He has said all along HE will never ask for an extension. All the court has done has now given him the out.

GE will now be he didn't ask for the extension the courts did it. Played right into his hands
