Boro travelled to North London as we were drawn away to Spurs for the 2nd round league Cup fixture

Boro had started the season OK, but apart from scoring 3 at Birmingham on the opening day of the season, the following 5 fixtures the Boro didn't score more than one goal in any of them, with a game drawing a blank

The London media were waiting for a Spurs team to progress to the next round, Gilzean, Chivers, Peters will be too good for boring, boring Boro, or so they thought

We thumped them 4-0 at WHL, with goals from M. Smith, Mills, Hickton penalty & Armstrong strike, we certainly took sweet revenge for our league Cup exit there in 73

We travelled to Spurs later in the month in the league & beat them again, just how good could we have become

Big Jacks team that night

Jim Platt
John Craggs
John Hickton
Graeme Souness
Stuart Boam
Willie Maddren
Bobby Murdoch
David Mills
Malcolm Smith
Alan Foggon
David Armstrong
Alan Willey

having malcolm Smith and Alan Willey as center forwards was the teams weak link...look at the defence and midfield and the woefull strikers...if only supermac had joined

I appreciate £10,000 is a lot of money now to most people, never mind back then, but that was the difference for me, between winning the title and finishing 7th.

Big Jack should have agreed the fee Coventry insisted on for David Cross from Coventry the stubborn mule had the clubs finances at heart. Jack regretted not signing 2 players at this time I believe, but one striker of Cross’s ability would have seen us win the First Division imho. Cross’s value doubled just over a year later.

Typical Boro !

Went to both games but clearly remember the penalty in the League Cup. Millsy went flying down the right and ran the ball out of play and just fell over.
