11th September, Myself & 3 of my mates travelled to Derby for this 2nd division fixture against Tommy Dochertys Derby Country, we had started the season badly with one point out of 9 which included a couple of heavy defeats, but after the midweek draw at Newcastle we had renewed hope, well as football fans, a especially struggling football fans, you cling to any little bit of hope you have

This day was the game Stephen Bell in his 5th games scored his 1st Boro goal, the game that finished 1-1

Boro team
Jim Platt
John Brownlee
Joe Bolton
Colin Ross
Mick Baxter
Darren Wood
Tony Mowbray
Heine Otto
Dave Shearer
Mick Kennedy
Stephen Bell
Sub
Paul Ward

After 2 defeats at the start of the season the last 2 fixtures brought 2 draws has Bobby found a formula, system for us, are we turning the corner, coming back we felt a bit better & looking forward the the Fulham home game on Saturday..... Oh wait

Stephen was an amazing talent. I think it was the goal against Sheffield Wednesday which summed up his natural ability[^]

The lad had so much potential, but like all geniuses with the ball, had flaws, unknown to most.

A really special lad taken from us all far too soon [sad]

It must of been the England youth Team in 1979 as I know I was at Villa park watching him that night!

He was a friend and I did play footy with him. He was a very special talent.

The Italy game was one of only two fixtures England played at Villa Park at any level during the period when he would have been in the right age bracket.

On the night of the other one he was playing for Boro in Wilf Mannion's testimonial, hence my educated guess!

One fact I have learnt today is that he was born on my first birthday!

I met Stephen once at a Boro do. Seemed a nice, polite lad. I remember watching him play for Boro against Newcastle at St James. They just couldn’t get the ball off him. He was running rings around them. Sadly, I think he was in with a bad crowd. Nobody mentoring him. Towards the end, there was the shoplifting incident at Binns and then arrest for kicking a football against a neighbour’s garage door.

Sadly I didn’t keep a programme from the game!

It must of been England youths though.

Stephen just liked to drink....But way too much and didn’t have a level headed father or mentor (like they have agents now etc) to keep him out of late night establishments etc....and at that age without that strong guidance you think your invincible when your not. You need to be focused and on it.

Yes back then it was just sign here & play, as you say no one to look out for the poor lad, one minute low income as a youth, next a very rich, talented lad, sadly he didnt have someone to look out for him, harder back then

Erimus ; you asked me what was Stephen like playing with his mates…well, I was 4 years younger than he was but (I wont reveal how and why I knew him on here) when he was 17 and I was 13 we went on Park End field behind what used to be the community centre for a kick about with Stu Mac his best mate back then….and it was brilliant ; them 2 taking turns crossing balls for me to head in with them taking turns to be in goal…

I remember like it was yesterday and he turned up in his brand new XR2 (black)….we got on really well…
Believe it or not but at 14years old he took me to see chubby brown in a pub in stockton (he got on well with chubby)

He took me to Ayresome park a couple of times and I remember playing snooker with the first team coach…can’t remember his name…think it was O Rourke ?

ExFootyLegs, nice story & memories
I also remember Stu Mac, think he was released a bit later, people said he was the better of the 2, I find that hard to believe TBH

Looking at his interview on MOTD after he scored v Sheff Wed, he looked so young with the world at his feet, so much talent
