I never know what the expected convention is, especially as most stuff is paid by card online beforehand nowadays.
Do people still tip takeaway delivery drivers? Is it expected?

Serious first world problems, I know...

If I go through an app like Just eat then I won't tip as it's pre-paid and it's taken into account. If I ring up and order from an individual take away then I will tip them.

Yes, I do every time.

Exiled, I don't think the tips are pre paid?

Just eat might have high delivery charges but thatís just to help cover just eats take of the transaction. Iím sure someone told me it was either 11 or 13%.

The tip is for the driver only, there pay is often quite poor and the tips help to top it up so just decide if he warrants one if itís late itís not necessarily there fault. As long as the driver is polite it doesnít hurt to give them a quid.

I always used to give them a couple of quid, but as I just use plastic for everything these days I rarely have any cash. I also (wrongly) thought takeaway tipping was probably incorporated into the online fees nowadays.
Iím a terrible human being.

Our Friday take away is usually about £12 and change so just round up to 13 and add a pound. It's always gratefully received and I'm sure helps us get a quick service, never have to wait more than half an hour

I don't do takeaways, but I did hear that in the US some providers use the tip as part of the delivery drivers wage so that you're essentially tipping the company, not the driver.

It's probably in the t & C's somewhere or you could ask the driver next time he turns up.

There are a couple of takeaways near me where the delivery drivers are volunteers, honestly. I couldn't believe it. They are working for tips essentially. Not sure if they get a fuel allowance but I bet they don't have correct level of motor insurance

Tipping takeaway delivery drivers

A lad I worked with 2 years ago used to do takeaway delivery on evenings, lot of his friends did it as well. Was quite often cash in hand and obviously no tax on tips.

Obviously youíre not going to turn over 40k a year doing it, but he was making decent money through it. Even above board, itís minimum wage plus tips. I donít reallt get the point of tipping in this country - youíd never tip a shop assistant on minimum wage, nor someone in McDonalds. The guys in the takeaway will be on min wage as well but if you collect you don't chuck them a few quid because theyíre poorly paid ?

Tipping in the USA makes sense to me as theyíre taxed in an assumed level of tips. Over here I find it bizarre as we are basically saying itís ok to pay them a poor wage because we the consumers will top it up, but only for some people. Weíll tip the server for getting us a beer but not the chef that actually made the food.

Just eat does take a percentage, but they also handle card payments, places give away less free stuff and they will get a lot of business they would not have otherwise had without the ease of the just eat app, and with places charging £1-3 delivery that pretty much covers their cut. Often if you ring direct there is no delivery fee, or its smaller but then its cash most times.

So yeah we donít tip just eat, not do we give taxi drivers a few extra quid. Iíll tip a sever if service has been exceptional but otherwise I see it as these people doing their job. I donít begrudge others tipping, itís your choice, just seems odd to me we tip some things but not others... my girlfriend gets a £90 haircut and colour and tips the guy a tenner!

I don't tip. Tipping was a convention to reward exceptional service. The Americans use it as a way to pay lower wages, its not something to be encouraged over here as a rule of thumb.

Just as an aside.

Delivery drivers are supposed to have the correct insurance to deliver food. And it is expensive. I bet 99% of them don't, and therefore run the risk of their insurance being nul and void. The police do check if they suspect someone is delivering food, and there is the risk of points on the licence.

Even the larger national takeaway companies don't explain this to their drivers.

My son looked into it years ago and decided it was not worth the risk.

Always tip unless they are rude...(never happened so far like) ...They get paid jackXXXXXX and are at least doing something (honest) to earn a few bob which I am happy to reward with a couple of quid.

Usually tip a couple of quid, the way I look at it they've made my life easier and are usually young lads just making their way in life with maybe a young family to support, getting of their backsides to work and often doing unsociable hours and it would be the price of my petrol should I go and collect.

I do tip when the service is exceptional but never delivery drivers. Most times Iíve used delivery in the past itís usually lukewarm by the time it arrives anyway, so I just pick things up myself so itís piping.

If I order Pizza from Dominos, I always pay online and tip the lad a quid if I have any change, if not, I don't worry about it.

If I order curry from local takeaway, it's a phonecall and they just ask you to pay the driver cash, so usually round up and add a pound.

I wouldn't order a take away if I never had a couple of quid for the driver at hand. We always tip online grocery drivers too.

Just eat charge takeaways 15% of an order, plus VAT, plus a 50p admin fee. So if you order something for £10, just eat take £2.30 of that, if you have a driver on minimum wage averaging say 4 deliveries p/h thatís £2 going to the driver aswell. So for that £10 order the takeaway barely gets a fiver.

The problem gets worse if your VAT registered have have to pay another 20% on that order, even taking the driver out of the equation and just looking at commission and VAT every order taken through just eat will get 40% took off the margin.

Itís extortion and most takeaways hate it and have moved onto their own online ordering platforms, the problem here is Just eat have amazing SEO and if someone searches your takeaway the just eat links will ALWAYS rank higher than your own.

A friend used to deliver for a Chinese in the Eaglescliffe area. They got the delivery fee from each delivery plus any tips added on. Used to make about 50£ a night but obviously had to pay for their own petrol.

I always give a couple of quid because it saves me a journey and petrol. Also, it tends to be younger lads wanting to earn rather than look for handouts from state.

I like to support that attitude.

Nice to see so many are still tipping and I'm ashamed to say it was probably just a convenient 'ignorance' on my part to think that online orders meant tips weren't expected [|)].
Going to have to get myself a stash of coins ready for future orders.
