For Prostate cancer.
Really enjoyed it.

Very edgey, a few choice words, I'm a big fan of Slaven, those days with Archie Stephens were something else.

He's been doing the rounds by himself and with Archie for years now.
Surely all of Teesside has seen him.
Great player and unbelievable how he is still carrying on his legend status from 30 years ago.
He must struggle to think of stories now

Bernie was made for the Boro - Pre Riverside days

A lot of talk on here about Money Ball players well to me Bernie is the near the top when I think Moneyball style player:

He looked slow, not particularly strong, not a natural header, no special shot in him, often caught off side, could go quite a while without scoring, didn't appear a team player - but look at his goal scoring record - he just kept on scoring.

I wouldn't agree that he couldn't head it or no special shot on him. He scored a lot of 8 yard headers, his technique was fine, he just wasn't very tall.

He scored a lot of goals from various distances and angles too.

He was an excellent finisher, he could bang it in the postage stamp from 25 yards, chip the keeper, was good at 1-on-1s, scored a few volleys but passing it into the corner was probably his go to finish

What would you think he'd be worth in today's market?

A 20+ goal a season Championship player.

20 mil ?

redwurzel, I would put Bernie in the same category as managers we have & didn't expect big things of & turned up trumps, example, Bruce, Lennie, Stan Anderson, big Jack, even Willie Maddren who results didn't do him justice the players he brought in were a massive part of our success, basically for the price we got for Bernie not much was expected og him & what a record he left with

I agree Boromart, Slav was a quality striker with a lot to his game. His finishing from all distances was superb when he was playing well - look at that hat trick he scored at Coventry for instance - 3 brilliant finishes, two of them outstanding volleys. I also think he would have scored a lot of goals at the top level. In his one season in the Prem with Boro I believe he got 15 in the league and 18 in total. Good stats in a relegated side.

Wonderful Boro player.
All those goals. Clinging onto that wire.
Worth the admission on his own.

Born 30 years later and he'd be a multi-millionaire.

The 3 Legends. Nowt like it these days.

The days when his name would pop up on a Ceefax with regularity. Most fans of other clubs my age remember him for that if they donít remember much else about us.

Great finisher, liked him with Baird especially the last game of the season against Newcastle.

Last 2 season and this season has been crying out for a 3 Legends type show what with Pulis, Woodgate and no money, Sunderland's relegation and failure in play offs and Newcastle will he sell won't he sell, Rafa and Bruce. Surprised it wasn't revived.

Slaven is proably the best one on one finisher I've seen at the club, I can't recall too many he missed when he was through on goal and if he had been our regular penalty taker throughout his time with us would have had more goals.

Scored a winner for Port Vale at Wembley and the goal that kept Darlington in the football league.

Don't think it has the demand for some reason. It used to be incredibly popular but I remember by the end they used to struggle for callers and to fill the 2 hours. I think the rise of social media didn't help it, that phone in along with messageboards used to be one of the only places you could get your view out, now you can do it 24 hours a day wherever you are.

Alot of his finishes were lovely balls rolled or caressed along the ground past the keeper. Too many strikers seem to hit the keeper and we say good save but I'd say bad finish bernie would have put that away to my lad.

The greatest for me, loved him, didn't show his shot which was a nightmare for keepers and if they did save it, it was normally spilled and he tucked the 2nd ball away.

Very very good finisher with excellent close control.
One of my very favourite Boro players of all time.

The switch between his feet and finish to equalise against Villa in 2nd leg of ZDS was brilliant.
His hat-trick at Cov in the top flight was sublime.

Didn't he get another 1st half hat trick at Ayresome Park, my memory is failing me, it might have been against Brighton?

And I'm pretty sure they were all at the East Stand end.

Enjoyed watching Bernie's career at Boro and he created a lot of good memories for me and other Boro fans.

However, his poor attitude and petulance at times, prevents me from giving Slaven 'legend' status.

Leaving the ground after being subbed whilst a match was still being played at Ayresome Park and refusing to warm up pre-match or during the match when he was sub away to Bristol Rovers at Twerton Park, are two examples that immediately spring to mind.

Having made a 500 miles round trip as a supporter to that Bristol game I found that disrespectful and unforgivable.

Bernie Slaven was a very technical footballer. His first touch was immense. Could score with the outside and inside of his foot or his laces. He scored loads of headers too.

And he could hold a defender off when running though on goal.

Imagine if the offside law was level in those days, you could add another 20 to 30 goals to his Boro tally.

A fine, fine, gifted footballer.
