1 point from 2 winnable games

Out of the 1st round of the league cup at home to a League 2 side.

But hey, it’s entertaining and that’s all our fans want. Right?

What a surprise he’s back. Disappeared for the second half of last season after his man Pulis produced the most soul destroying football ever seen at the Riverside but cannot wait to jump on the new lad, just like he has with every other manager except for the corrupt liar who’s now laughing at us from his mansion in Sandbanks.

In 4 games so far my teams have scored 8 goals and conceded 14.

Boro drew 3-3, Billy Town lost 6-0 and 5-2, winning one 3-0.

Haven't seen a bad match, though one was a little too one sided.

No worse than the shoite Pulis served up against Newport County and Burton Albion.

Keep that in mind if it helps you put things into perspective. Mistake made with team selection but lessons have to be learnt by managers.

Our fans have got exactly what they wanted, anyone but Pulis in the pursuit of attacking football which was apparently all they really wanted and results were secondary.

6 months ago I warned them it would be Woodgate with a cost cutting agenda, and they still wanted it.

What we’re seeing now is buyers remorse. So many of you fell hook line and sinker for Gibson’s snake oil.

Reality is indeed kicking in.

"Our fans have got exactly what they wanted, anyone but Pulis in the pursuit of attacking football which was apparently all they really wanted and results were secondary"

Only that was not what the fans wanted Pog. Anyone but Pulis was not the pick of the fans and nor was Woody.

There was however a recognition that we had to try something different otherwise the fans would depart in their droves and success would become even less likely.

Woody faces an uphill task but we should give him every encouragement and show some patience and hopefully he will turn it around.

Your need for self-elevation by telling people they were wrong and you were right is just really odd and it's gone on for years now, do you do this in all aspects of your life or just football?

It's worth noting though, we were always going to cost cut and people decided they'd prefer to see that under a more proactive approach. For better or worse, some would prefer to risk and try something different rather than stick with something soul destroying but predictable. But I suppose you wouldn't have got your 'told you so' opportunity if we did the latter.

What self congratulatory nonsense Pog. During the end of the disaster that was Pulis’ reign you were nowhere to be seen. The dismal home record, the worst form for 20 years, the defensive, goal shy soulless performances - where were you? You were hiding because of your ridiculous defence of Pulis.

Now, suddenly, at the very first sign of trouble and in the infancy of Woodgate’s time as manager here you are lording it over posters, claiming that you predicted all of this and that people are remorseful about wanting that bloke out of the club. All presented with such glee too.

Utter rubbish. I’m glad he’s gone. Over the moon he’s gone. No remorse here whatsoever. Woodgate wasn’t my choice but the approach most certainly is. I also realise that time and patience is required and I’m more than happy to give the club both. Pulis was a disaster and we needed a change of direction. And you’ve given him 3 games. Well done.

“Only that was not what the fans wanted Pog. Anyone but Pulis was not the pick of the fans and nor was Woody.”

The overwhelming majority on here couldn’t name a manager they wanted to replace Pulis with. “It’s not our job to look for a manager” was the stock answer because it sounds better than “we don’t have a clue”.

Many literally said anyone but Pulis, just someone who’ll attack.

That message was repeated in discussions I had on social media, at work, amongst friends, family, etc.

I said at the time that’s a terrible strategy, he failed to us in the play-offs, so needed to go but to say anyone be careful what you wish for.

As expected Woodgate got the job, people were underwhelmed but got suddenly got behind him after he delivered some sound bites in an interview and brought Karanka’s cheerleader back.

Now after three games it’s already clear this guy is out of his depth, suddenly that’s not what they wanted after all.

I hope to god we get a win on Saturday because most of what I’ve seen so far is quite frankly worrying.

Our fans lost their minds last season, in a season when we finished 7th. I don’t know how many would cope with a scrap down the other end.

Think of it as a journey. The fans wanted a different approach and that’s what Gibson’s given them, but I wouldn’t expect instant results and I can’t comprehend any knee jerk stuff.

Pointless comparing Woodgate and Pulis. As many know I was content with Pulis’ approach but it needed to pay instant dividends and It didn’t so we’re having a go at something else. The two managers have totally different tools at their disposal though, and the critical success factors are totally different too.

We’re a mid-table Championship side. For me the goal is to get up quicker than we did last time, which means we have 3 seasons after this to do it. I’d be concerned if we were hovering above the relegation zone at Christmas, but until then I expect many more games and results like the ones we’ve seen so far and hopefully a few good ones too, but I’m not going to act surprised or angry about it. These are not the “glory days”.

Who would have been your choice(s) of manager to pick from Pog out of interest?

I don't think many people's (if any) first choice was Woodgate but it's probably a decent thing to give him more than 3 games with a bunch of new-ish players to sort out what was an absolute mess from an attacking perspective under Pulis.

Luton - baptism of fire. We played well and there were signs of what we’re trying to do. Would have been a win if Assombalonga let’s someone else take the penalty.

Brentford - good first half, two perfectly good goals disallowed before half time. Poor second half. Deserved something from the game.

Crewe - a really inexperienced side lost on penalties. Poor performance but showed spirit and determination to get back to 2-2.

It’s been fine margins for me. I’ve seen some good and some bad. Long way to go, but you’d hope that we’ve learnt some valuable lessons in those first three games.

We are very naive and inexperienced as a team now (coaches and players).

The biggest concern is if we get an injury or two. We need everyone fit until we can strengthen in January.

I told everyone that Woody was going to get the job ages ago, not because I'm itk, but because I know how people work and Gibson is like an open book to me at times.

Plenty of us knew and pointed out that the parachute payments were propping us up and how we'd ultimately wasted them.

This was always the way we were going and I even tried to lay the groundwork for lowering expectations when people were going through wishlists of managers and signings.

You didn't have to be a footballing guru to see this.

Unlike some though, I'm not crowing about being right because this is a matter of necessity based on years of mismanagement by the man at the top.

It is what it is and there's not a lot we can do about it.

In view of the fact that we failed to even make the playoffs, let alone win promotion, we have conclusive proof that Pulis’ miserable ‘means to an end’ approach was far from worth it. We endured anti-football and achieved precisely nowt! Leaping on the present approach after three games demonstrates a real lack of understanding for the game.

Woodgate is trying to change the way we play completely, from a defensive ‘keep the shape’ tactics to an attacking ‘high press’ tactics. That’s literally going from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Obviously it takes time to implement that change and we should improve over the coming weeks/months. Only a small improvement could have seen us win the three previous games.

“Biggest hypocrite on the board is Pog. Slates fans repeatedly for complaining about Pulis then has the knives out for Woodgate less than a fortnight into the season. He's a parody of himself.”

I never wanted Woodgate, I’ve said this for at least 6 months now. It was on the cards for a very long time that he was Pulis replacement which was the central plank in my argument as to why it would have been be a total waste of time getting rid of him during last season.

Woodgate is a terrible appointment, but I don’t blame him in any way for taking the job. Anyone who’s a Boro fan, local guy would want the job. I blame Steve Gibson for being stupid and naïve enough to give him the job. Naïve is probably the wrong word, he knew exactly what he was doing, appointing someone who would bend the knee without question and not bring the change which was desperately needed.

Like I said, many of our fans are getting exactly what they asked for, and already the buyer’s remorse is kicking in. They’ve started hypocritically covering for Woodgate on things they would never have done for the previous manager – 1 point from Luton and Brentford, playing a CM at RB, waiting 75 minutes to make a sub when getting beat, bringing on a RB when chasing the game, getting knocked out the cup at home to a League 2 side.

They’ll undoubtedly entrench themselves further and go on to claim, “anyone but Pulis” and “just want to see some entertainment” wasn’t what they actually wanted.

I ran away[:D]as I’d said on this forum back when we were challenging for automatic promotion, I was using this forum less and less due to the amount of trolls, it was dead after we on a gam and the terrible standard of debate.

I’d stopped posting line-ups regularly, stopped posting post-match summaries. I just couldn’t be bothered investing time arguing with people who couldn’t string a coherent argument together.

You can only argue with people who genuinely believe that black is white for so long, who will just out and out lie and misrepresent basic facts such as claiming we’ve spent £10m more than we actually spent and we’re ultra-negative whilst simultaneously creating more chances over a six game period than free-scoring Norwich.

I was actually told to stop looking at stats that proved contrary to the opinion of many in here Daniel Ayala was not the best CB in the Championship. Anyone who saw Potus Jansen on Saturday will know those stats for last season were spot on.

PAMH surely he needs games to get the 'shape' (your word not mine) of the team right. I seem to remember that we took 1 point from Pulis' first 3 home games in charge. All of them were 'winnable' games against teams below us in the table. Actually all games are 'winnable'. We may be in for a difficult season but so be it. Pulis' failure to get us into the play-offs last season from the position we were in in January/February represented abject failure. 6 defeats in a row was indefensible. Maybe he was still trying to get the 'shape' right 50 odd games into his reign.

This is absolutely pathetic, woodgate wasn't my first choice and I thought we might struggle this season.

However I've enjoyed the first two league games of the season much more than any game the second half of last season.

The club have said all summer this is a transition season, so just accept that.

Pulis didn't achieve anything last season so didn't deserve to stay. So move on.

Woodgate wouldn't have been my first choice and I don't expect us to do particularly well but I think that is mostly down to the recruitment. Whether Woody or someone else is to blame for that I don't know. At this point I am not worried about the way we play, it takes time for a new manager and a new philosophy to bed in but I do worry that it will take too long and we will be struggling at the bottom end of the league. To have a team that was one of the lowest scorers in the division and only make 1 attacking addition to it I think leaves us with a huge task of improving the attacking output without giving too much away at the back.

There was plenty of encouraging things in the 1st 2 games. We should've beaten Luton if Britt had scored his penalty or one of his other easy chances and Brentford we were done by the officials. Admittedly neither of those teams are going to be troubling the promotion spots but it wasn't all doom and gloom other than the defending which was atrocious for a lot of the goals we have conceded already.

Whatever happens I will be much happier watching it than I ever was watching Pulisball. All I ask is for effort and some attacking intent. Hopefully a steady season and Gibson will open his chequebook when he feels he can trust Woodgate to spend it well.

Rioch won only 5 out of his first 15 games, we were then relegated. There wasnt much hope about tbh.

Oh wait on, apart from the Sheffield utd 2-1 home defeat, were at the end we were given a standing ovation despite defeat. I think we did that because we knew Bruce was doing his best with what he had.
Ian Porterfield remarked he thought he had seen and heard it all but cheering a great performance from a club in trouble after defeat
In 86 after the rubbish bailed out, he was left with kids. Most didnt know these kids from Adam at the Hartlepool game, nor the following games.

I remember as the crowds dwindled, the names (the later returning fans) called the team.

When people who used to go found out who we were left with, they went on about how garbage we are and we would be relegated again.

Some Fans...Some story UTB.

Hang on aren’t you the guy who flounced off the board for months? [:D]

You were the guy who claimed we’d spent £10m more than we had actually spent to criticise the managers spending, and when asked to where you got those bogus figures from you response was “the same place you got yours”.

You then tried to claim we’d made loan players into permanent signings, which was untrue.

I saw another poster schooled you over the summer when you tried to claim our home record was in the bottom 3 in the league when it was in fact mid-table.

You really don’t want to start the whole hypocrisy argument, as we’ve established many times I have the receipts for your outrageous hypocrisy.

This might come as a shock to you but I’m under zero obligation to dedicate a portion of my free time to come on here and argue black is white and interupt my Saturday evenings so I can read how the victory we’s just had was the worst thing people have ever seen:

A selection of the many arguments:

Pulis is refusing to spend Gibson’s money

Pulis had no input in Traore’s improvement, he just had to play him

We’ve spent £30m plus loans

We weren’t creating chances during our losing streak (we were up there with Norwich for chances created in that run)

The majority of our efforts were long speculative ones (we had one of the best ratios for efforts in the 6 yard box and penalty area)

Daniel Ayala is the best CB in the league (not a single stat backed that up)

Pulis is a player repellent, no decent player would want to play for him (he then convinces a player who’s won everything in the English game to come here)

Braithwaite only wanted to leave because Pulis played him wide that’s not his position (he’s still here isn’t he?)

Assombalonga was only poor because Pulis was asking him to do things he couldn’t do (still generally useless)

Pulis was out of order to say “thank god Jordan kept hold of the ball” when Assomablonga tried to wrestle a last minute penalty off him (he’s really shown he’s good at those since)

Boro fans are only booing because of Pulis and his tactics, they just want a manager who will attack. (All of three games under the new guy)

I argued against all those at the time, most were disproven at the time. All it needed was a little bit of time and they’ve all been shown to be complete and utter nonsense.

For someone that doesn't want to dedicate his free time to this site you certainly do seem to have taken a helluva lot of interest during your 'absence'.

There's also a quite disturbing need to feel that you were right, even when all of the evidence points to the opposite.

And then you're left with this. Writing length posts full of lies and apparently built on stalking. Thankfully it's not just me that's spotted it: you're a complete and utter hypocrite.

Such as?

Remember when you called me a liar when I’d said you called Boro fans ungrateful for questioning the signing of Rudy Gestede? It didn’t end well for you.

Such as what you just posted. I understand why you're getting so wound up, I really do. You got it really wrong about Pulis and for whatever reason find that difficult to take. As a result you left the board (though apparently still read it) before returning triumphantly after the first two defeats under Woodgate claiming to have been right all along. When the hypocrisy and unreasonableness of that is pointed out you've now reverted to lashing out. I think you need to take a breath and calm down.

So again empty words, unable to provide any examples.

“You got it really wrong about Pulis and for whatever reason find that difficult to take.”

What exactly did I get wrong? I didn’t say anything about what he would deliver. All I said was that he was the best appointment available at the time. I agreed with him leaving in the summer. That’s all well documented.

“As a result you left the board (though apparently still read it) before returning triumphantly after the first two defeats under Woodgate claiming to have been right all along.”

I’ve been posting semi-regularly on here again for 2 months now[:D]

See you haven’t lost your knack for just making stuff up[:D]

must be tough for Pog to see his Uncle Tony still out of work. We should be more understanding of Pogs plight.

Seriously Pog, you need to take a minute. You're coming across as really quite unhinged.

Haven’t read everything above but for me I’ve got some concerns already. I don’t think we’ve got the players to play the way he’s said we’re going to play. Clayton defensive midfield, the lack of other options at centre back beyond Ayala and Fry. Our fullbacks have looked horrifically exposed in the two games I’ve watched.

Praying for a miracle!

It was me who responded to Adi's post on the home record. I can confirm that he is without doubt the most dishonest poster I've interacted with on this board.

He will make untrue statements presumably he knows they are untrue but thinks that people will not bother to check. When challenged he will maintain they are true and then if challenged again he will turn it around on the other poster and make out they're aggressive, angry, stalking him, etc.

That is his modus operandi on here.

Pogga hope all is well with your family member[^]

Here's the thread GibbosArmy. Nothing to hide. Point me to where I maintained it to be true. I got it wrong, admitted it and apologised.

“The fans got what they wanted”

Not strictly true though, is it?

The majority of fans did not want Woodgate as head coach (and probably still don’t)

It was the correct call to part ways with Pulis

However, it was the wrong call (in my opinion) to replace him with Woodgate.

JW has been dealt a terrible hand by Pulis the manager.
6 players out of contract at the end of this season , 4 of them over 30 year old , he and HIS team should have moved them on while they were worth something , and bought in younger hungry players.
He slagged Britt off in public.
He spent 20 million on 3 players we didn't need , in
Flint ( Webster was a better , younger player for half the price )
McNair , who had no sign of being consistent , although we are now seeing he has something
Saville , a 10 goal international midfielder for Millwall , but expensive at 7m .
He said he was brought in to sort the club out .
HE DID NOT DO IT .
He left a mess .
And JW is trying to sot it out with his hands tied , no money , and players seeing their time out .
He needs our support , and has my backing , so let him do his best and see where it gets us , the club needs the fans to get behind him and his team . UTB

Oh Pulis has left a mess alright!

Starting to think it's a bigger mess than what Strachan left us in.

Nailed it Gibbo[^]

Was wondering how you knew that but remembered I posted about it a few weeks ago.

Good thanks, it’s been difficult balancing work, a newborn and hospital visits but he’s regained the use of his arm and is back at home now and able to get around the house again[^]

Pog - quite aside from the back and forth we have (which I never take too seriously), I wasn’t aware that you either had a newborn or that someone close to you had been poorly. Let me take the opportunity to firstly say congratulations and secondly to wish your loved one a speedy recovery.
