But we have to give it till the end of august before we properly start wetting the bed.

Lots of winnable fixtures. If we come out and win the next 3 on the spin it will be all ok.

Ah yes because the end of August is long enough for a new manager In his first job. Mcclaren would havebeen gone after 3 weeks

Winnable fixtures?

Thank God we've got those first three really tough, no chance of a win fixtures out of the way then. We got away with only conceding six and getting knocked out of the cup to a League 2 side at home.

Do you think we might try and sneak Saville onto the Millwall team bus back to to sunny old London Town?

New manager in his first job....ex- Leeds United centre half....lost first home game to a side from London....I can confidently say that our next defeat will be at Barnsley in mid February.

It's also worth bearing in mind that Norwich City had 5 points from their first 7 games last season. I'm not necessarily saying that we're certain to run away with the division, and, despite my previous post, we may lose again before February, but it's far too early to draw many conclusions yet, as the OP says.

My take is that last night was obviously disappointing with a much changed team but there have been positives from our first two league games.

Had we not missed the penalty at Luton we would probably have come away with 3 points and the first half on Saturday was the best 45 minutes for a long time. But for a highly debatable referee's decision we'd have been a goal up and the game would have had a different complexion.

I do worry about how many goals we're going to ship this season (somewhat ironically after the concerns everyone has expressed about our previous approach) and the bottom line is that we are currently at the wrong end of the table with 1 point out of 6 but it wouldn't have taken very much to go differently for that to have been 4 or 6 points.

On the other hand, I believed until stoppage time at Rotherham that we were going to get promoted last season....

McMordie I'm not overly negative or positive at the moment however I don't take the same positive from the 2 league games. Yes we would've won at Luton if we'd scored the penalty, but the reason we missed it is because our main striker is so erratic despite his scoring record. And yes it was entertaining first half on Saturday, but Brentford massively contributed to that with some unbelievable generosity at the back. Once they stopped playing like school kids we struggled to make any impact.

I think it'll be an up and down sort of season.

Wilko - You're probably better able to judge than I am because I wasn't at the Brentford game and am basing my view on the comments on the BBC Tees commentary. In fairness, I should also probably balance my comment on the Luton game by saying that the we could easily have lost had it not been for a goalkeeping howler and the referee's decision not to give a penalty for Wing's challenge.

You're probably right about an up and down season.

It's very much 'fine margins' in football.

If Britt sticks his pen away at 2-3 we win at Luton. Then we batterd Brentford in the first half and had 2 perfectly good goals chalked off.

That said it doesn't excuse the 2nd half against Brentford or last night. The bigger issue about last night is these very players were meant to be the ones knocking on Woodys door wanting to play and impress.

Tue likes of Rudy and Saville were woeful and frankly a complete waste of money.

The squad is very 'thin' to quote Woody and we all knew that from day 1. The inability to get even a couple in on loan last week could be a massive error.

It feels a little like Southgate part 2 [|)]

Cost cutting, poor squad, no depth and a inexperienced manager not really ready for the role.

We’ve lost our identity, Woodgate seems to be telling the fans what they want to hear and he is trying to implement it but you can’t change a couple of players and completely change the style of a team. Our strength the last 5 years has been our defensive shape and discipline and we’ve tried to get away from that with mostly the same squad. Our strikers are as inconsistent as they’ve always been too.

100% correct this is the crux of the problem we cant be turned into a free flowing goal scoring side with virtually the same squad of ineffective atticking players its almost impossible
