Rain forecast both Thursday and spare day on friday. If rained off Australia would go through as finished higher in the group.

That would be some anti climax[sad]

Also no spare day for the final. If it's rained off the two teams share the cup.. Strange[rle]

I can't believe how poorly the whole thing has been marketed to be honest, it's barely made a noise anywhere in the country.

Whether it's because most of the tickets sold quickly and games are only shown on Sky, I'm not sure, but it does seem like a fairly low-key event considering we are hosting it and have a very good chance of winning it.

I spend a lot of time in and around Durham, and even there, with all it has to offer the region, you've got to go some to realise it's even on if you're not a cricket fan.

Odd.

I agree, though at the riverside itself they was plenty going on and a great atmosphere, street signs also all over the place. needed terrestrial tv , which it should have got in this country as host nation. most of the tv money comes from India so free to air here wouldn't have left such a big hole in the coffers.

I agree that, in particular, the England games should have been free-to-air. However, the whole thing gets complicated by the television rights business model.

The ICC sold the global rights for all their competitions to Star Sports (Indian company) for something like $2.5 billion. They then sell-on the rights to other broadcasters for specific regions of the world. Sky bought the UK rights from Star Sports.

Therefore, even though the main income generator is the Indian market, the value of the UK deal does matter to the primary rights holder, which is Star Sports.

I think Sky have agreed to share the final with a free-to-air broadcaster, should England qualify. Fingers crossed.

ah right thanks billy, its just frustrating as a cricket fan when every four years people turn to the football and rugby world cup, the women's world cup the Olympics etc and the nation is griped by it, the cricket world cup slips under the radar, sad as we could win it for the first time and its on home soil. i have really enjoyed skys coverage but it needed terrestrial tv.
look at the ashes of 2005 on how interested people were.
anyway lets hope the weather holds for what will hopefully be 3 cracking games.

Will take some balls to win the toss and bowl - don't know what the %age is during the World Cup but it seems to me that the team batting first has won the majority of matches - might be just my impression though
IP: Logged
Billy_Horner Posted on 09/07/2019 10:15

Main determinant is whether team batting first uses their full allocation of overs or not. When they have, team batting first have won 80% of games. When theyíve been bowled out before 50 overs, team batting first has lost 73% of games.

That said, India have successfully chased twice already this World Cup.

theres runs to be had if you can get past the first 12 overs i think.

This is one of those games where youíd much rather know the result of the other semi-final first.

If England win on Thursday, then it would be preferable to play NZ in the final. However, if the Aussies were to win then youíd definitely want them facing India.

Oh well. Come on NZ!

New Zealand have been so poor this tournament. I think they've been well below their best.

So lucky to qualify also. I think if their game against India in the league wasn't rained off, they wouldn't even be in the semi-final.

True, but either by luck or by design they might have played a blinder here. Looked like setting no total whatsoever, but the DLS calculation might make this a very tricky chase for India.

As Iíve pointed out a few times, itís never been as simple as bat first and win, even at this World Cup. You have to make sure you bat all your allotted overs.

Sides that have batted first and used all their overs have won over 80% of the games. Sides that have batted first and been bowled out have lost 75%.
