Once saw him in a club in the town. He was at Madrid at the time and injured. His entourage were acting like prats on the dance floor but he seemed to be sipping soft drinks and just looking on.
Wasnt my choice of manager, but we'll just have to see and fingers crossed he comes good.

The daughter of a friend worked reception at the Blackwell Grange Hotel for a time.
She was the night receptionist and Sunderland were staying over, they were playing Boro the next day and continuing their usual routine.
At about 3 in the morning Peter Reid fell through the door unable to walk, he had been in Yarm with Brian Robson, another legendary drinker.
Robbo didn't even have a tactics board remember.

Not sure what Robson and Reid being drunk after a night out in Yarm has to do with Jonathan Woodgate but there you go.

I saw Woodgate in the Southern Cross a few weeks back stood at the bar getting a drink with a young lady presumably his partner, well turned out but totally quiet and inconspicuous if I didnít know who he was I wouldnít have noticed he was there.

I wasnít going to post on any of the Woodgate related threads because people seem to have made their minds up and sadly a lot of what they are basing their opinions on is untrue or at least very harsh.

Iíve knocked around with him a fair few times over the last few years, we share mutual friends. Im not close enough to him to feel the need to big him up, my opinion on him is unbiased.

In a nutshell hes a top bloke, family man, very well respected within football with lots of contacts, he knows his stuff and is very serious about his role at the club. Iíve got nothing but good things to say about him through first hand experiences and through people who know him very well. A lot of the hate is based on stories that are simply untrue or stories from 15 years ago that have been blown out of proportion. Thatís Middlesbrough for you unfortunately.

He was in my year at school and bullied a lad I knew, but he was about 13 at the time so I don't really think thats anything to do with his professional player or managerial career. Lots of kids do stupid things.

Unfairly misjudged by people who judge from how he was a young daft lad,
Now very well respected by everyone in football.
His coaching of the defence is fantastic and will go on to be a very good manager
All the other players respect him highly and he has worked under some top managers and hopefully the club will back him

Not sure what Robson and Reid being drunk after a night out in Yarm has to do with Jonathan Woodgate but there you go.

The OP started the thread looking for girly gossip about JW.
I know that much because he has posted his own snippet at least twice that I have seen and I don't live on here.
The Robson era is legendary but the truth is that it was predominantly because of the then new stadium and the fantastic players that Gibson paid through the nose for.
It was a brilliant time but Robsons contribution to it all was as a player, leader and conduit for attracting players.
His character was flawed and his tactical nous was none existent.
The answer to your question is, Woodgates character and drinking habits will have no bearing on his achievements as a coach ( see one B Clough) and without a crystal ball nobody knows whether he will succeed or fail as a manager of a football club.
In short, most footballers, like most human beings, are flawed in some way.

When we were kids he'd just signed for Real Madrid and was at his mam n dads in Nunthorpe. We were playing footy on the street outside (heads & volleys into the salt-grit bin) and he was going in the house with his dad and a takeaway.

One of the lads asked him for an autograph and he went in the house and brought all 4 of us out Real Madrid gear (trackie tops and polo shirts that were way too big for us if I remember correctly) and had a kick about with us for a couple of minutes before going for his dinner.

At the time his reputation locally was pretty low, the usual rumours of burning £50 notes etc but he made four 12/13 year old kids day. Only interaction I've had but massive thumbs up from me.

Never met or spoke to him before but watched as he spent last night in the pouring rain refereeing a match at the sports Village for two teams of 6-7 year olds. He was good with all the kids, helped them throughout the game and was laughing and joking with them and just being a dad.

Absolutely no impact how he will manage or coach but shows he may well have changed since any drunken teen/early 20s stories - with everything going on he could of easily sat out of the way or swerved the game rather than getting in the middle of it and think the parents respected that by not trying to quiz him on what was going on.

Used to see woody a lot in his younger days and when he first come back from madrid. Really didn't like him or his mates, but he did seem a load more mature post-madrid but still a bit of a whopper.

Don't live in the area anymore but from what I've heard does seem like h'es a different bloke these days and a lot more settled.

to be honest I think if I was in the lime light, they'd be plenty saying I was a total d1ck in my 20's too, but I'm a totally different person to what I was then so I'm sure woody is too. Unfortunately for him though he's going to have to work twice as hard to prove he's changed to everybody because of his reputation from his younger days which only he is responsible for. He's got to be sensible enough to realise that though

I genuinely think that incident as Leeds with Bowyer when he got charged with aggravated assault was a real wake up call and it changed his life.

As a youngster he was a complete PoS and there was an incident before where my mate (who I have no reason to believe would lie) grabbed him by the throat for simply asking for his autograph.

However since his Leeds days my brother met him and said he was seemed nice enough.

So yeah, I think a lot of it his reputation was to do with hanging out with the wrong crowd in his youth and needing to grow up. Hopefully that is the case anyway.

Never "met" him as such, but bumped into him a couple of times.

He was in Phyche a while back and asked him for a picture, which he was more than happy to do, wished him well and shook his hand.

I also bumped into him at the cinema at Teesside park during his first stint here, so I must have been about 14/15. Again he was happy to chat for 5 minutes in the lobby.

Seems like a nice enough bloke based on my two very brief interactions with him. Just a typical Boro lad, think it's likely he has got himself into trouble in the past, but then again, how many other Boro lads are in the same boat. I don't think that is what defines you as a person and as many have alluded to, he has probably grown up since.

I was in the purple onion once with my friend who was very drunk. Woodgate was behind the bar serving drinks. My mate was infuriated by this and kept saying 'who the fcuk does he think he is'

Woodgate walked past us both and my mate grabbed him by the neck and had a go at him for apparently barging him out of the way (he didn't) I pulled my friend off (oi oi [:D]) and asked Woodgate how the season was going.

Amazingly enough he stood there and chatted even though his mates were out and my mate had just been a total tvvat to him.

"So all these stories about him burning money in the Dickens, bullying people, causing mayhem wherever he goes etc"

I'd say they were exaggerated rather than being total bs. I still stand by he could be an unpleasant character, and he hung round with some even more unpleasant characters but it was over 15 years ago and lots can change in that time.

people can change (and hopefully he has). All of the 'stories' are based on fact but may not be accurate.

Anyone who knows the people he hung around with 10-15 years ago know the score.

He did give it the big i am not matter what people say, i have seen it with my own eyes on more than one occasion.

As a small example, a friend of mine was waiting in the Europa for a parmo take out one night. They were stood near the little bar area having a drink while it was being cooked. They waited about 20 minutes and then asked the guy at the counter how long it would be. He said its a couple of minutes away. Then Woodgate walked in, walked strait to the counter and said the the guy "have you got any parmos ready"? The guy dissapeared out the back for a minute then appeared back with a parmo, handed it to him and off he went. My friends then waited another 5 minutes and asked if theirs was ready. The guy then said "there has been a mix up with the orders and we are just starting yours now".

Now the guy behind the counter was partly to blame for doing it but when you translate what Woodgate actually said it was simply "can i take someone else's order because i'm too important to wait"

Although its a bit of a stupid story, it captures how his personality was (at that time).

Hopefully he has now grown out of his ego and grown up in general.

Not really woody related but

we we were stood on th bank at the old Wembley during one of our seemingly endless finals with Chelsea waiting for the team coach to arrive up Wembley way and there was a bloke in a grey hoodie tops stood with his kid just in front of us and then I saw his top had his initials on it MP, it was mark proctor ( who was a boro coach at the time) just stood with his lad among the rest of us watching his home town club just like we all were. He could have been on that coach or arrived via some vip route but no he was stood there with the boro fans with his lad.

That is the sort of person I want at our club someone who cares and knows what it means.

Good luck woody

I grew up in Marton/Nunthorpe area in that era. I knew Woodgate from just knocking around the estate and played for the same team as him when we were about 10 or 11. I really got on well with him but I couldnt stand his best mate. I would have made a lot more effort with him if he didnt knock around with the lad. I suppose the extent I know him today is I dont know him well enough to have his number or drop around his house unannounced but if I bumped into him we would have a chat for 5 or 10 minutes. Thats about it but we do have a lot of common friends. The lad who went to prison was one of my best mates at school and I still speak to him regularly today.

My opinion of Woodgate is mainly positive. Hes a decent, grounded lad who has always been pleasant and chatty with me. Like someone else alluded to earlier in the thread he did act like a bit of a dick on occasions when we were younger but he was a young lad living the dream and it might of went to his head on occasion. These things also used to happen when he was out drinking and who hasnt been a bit stupid once tgeyve had a drink. He seems to have out grown that now but I dont see him regularly enough to say with any certainty.

I dont really know if he'll be a success as a manager. Im no footballing expert and on the odd occasion we do have a chat we tend to talk about the past or laugh about people we both know.

Lee Bowyer was the opposite this spured him on but Woody couldn't handle it. My brother was best mates with a lad connected to this case. This was huge.

Woodgate and his cronies were always known as 'feel-strongs' They'd be strong against the weak and submissive and pally with anyone capable of standing up to them. I guess that's partly epitomised by the horrific attack on the Asian student.

It's unlikely that Woodgate will make a good manager. He looks neither a motivator or a thinker so it's hard to see what his strengths will be. It's easy to see where his strengths are as a coach. He obviously has a good football brain in terms of actually playing the game, so he will able to communicate certain specifics really well. But I can't see him multitasking and being able to bring lots of decisions together. He doesn't look wired up to do that. Then again, stranger things have happened and he might do well.

Never met him, but he did, through a friend, sort me out free tickets for a couple of games down South. Didnít need to do it - but did.

Am I right in thinking there was a time when someone broke his jaw? A friend, supposedly. Seem to recall OíLeary questioned how he was spending his downtime and who with.

As I posted on the other thread we shared a bath together last night. (no dove soap shenanigans, just imperial leather and a cloth) Jonathan had an incredibly smooth back and strong yet soothing hands.

If our squad feels as half as refreshed as I did this morning then weíre moving in the right direction. UTB [^]

He's definately mixed with some people that makes you question his judgement and choices and made some pretty poor choices for a professional athlete - but I'm talking 15 years ago to my limited knowledge.

he seems to have grown up, lets hope so. I wasnt sure about the appointment, but he came across much better than I expected at his press conference.

Sometimes the past needs to stay in the past.

As London Boro said
I won't judge his past.
That would make me a hypocrite
Best of luck Woody.
Exciting young management team
And it will be fantastic to be hearing the LEO song again soon utb

The most concerning thing about the broken jaw incident is that he was drinking at the bruntons.

Woody got his jaw broke 17 years ago.. wtf does that have to do with his ability to coach a football team?

Btw, any of us could go into town on the weekend and get exactly the same thing done to us, whether we deserved it or not.
