Mogga was experienced, as was Strachan.

Agnew and Southgate weren't experienced.

The balance is a bit more even nowadays than it used to be.

Bobby Murdoch
Willy Maddren
Gareth Southgate
Its a risk but taking anyone on is. Good luck to him and ANY Boro manager, no matter who, gets my full support.

You've got to put it into context though - Karanka, Robson and McClaren had money to spend.

Fair enough, Strachan was obviously a disaster, but we know Mowbray was working under financial constraints.

Btw Agnew and venables were never officially our manager ( they weren’t offered/taken the full role).

Be fair, thd club was disintegrating around Murdoch and Maddren.

They had extremely shiťty hands dealt to them.

FFs how many more times are going to hear repeats of this myth?

It depends on the rookie; Charlton, Robson, McLaren and Karanka were rookies but all learned from some of the best old head managers in the game.

Rookie Southgate took us down.

Murdoch took us down although I appreciate he was handed a poisoned chalice.

Experienced manager John Neal was very good for us

Did we do better under rookie Monk? Did we FCK!

Agnew was completely “meh”.

Experienced manager Lennie Lawrence got us promoted and relegated - the same as rookie Bruce Rioch.

No hard and fast rules on this.

Wasnt rioch a novice?

Best experienced head we have had at the helm was Lennie Lawrence. If we're looking at former staff to help Woodgate he would be a superb appointment. Believe he's fulfilling that role at another club at present.

Btw Monk wasn’t a rookie we were his third club ffs

I’m just saying experience when it comes to us historically speaking isn’t always a positive.

“Monk wasn’t a rookie, we were his third club, FFS”

Yes, his third club in THREE SEASONS! Says a lot, I would suggest. And for one of those he was still a player.

No arguement there but three years in management is not a rookie.

...one of which he was also a player, so two seasons, arguably.

A novice at best.

His naivety, lack of experience and “rookiness” was shown by his shambolic chopping and changing of the team and tactics every game.

I think the problem is the word "always" Zorro. Its really an even split and a bit of myth.

Experienced managers - Neal (good), Allison (bad), Lawrence (good), Venables (good), Strachan (bad), Mowbray (ok although you'd never have believed that when reading this board at the time), Pulis (bad)

Novices - Monk (bad), Rioch (good)

Rookies - Charlton (good), Murdoch (bad), Maddren (bad albeit constrained), Todd (improved us by 14 positions in one season but for some reason classed as bad by many and was sacked), Robson (good), McClaren (good), Southgate (bad), Karanka (good), Agnew (bad).

You could, however, argue that the absolute best times at the club have been under managers we gave a break to, but two of those were in succession in an era where we had lots of cash on the hip (days which won't return any time soon).
