Can wewait till we’ve played a game before judging new boss

A novel approach I know but call me of fashioned I like to form an opinion after I’ve seen the team sheets and how we actually play

If it ( as looks likely) to be woody then let’s see how he and what looks like a new look back room staff do.

Needs a sort of 'free pass' for 10 games minimum, but sadly I fear he'll be judged much much faster than anybody else would be. Fingers crossed he gets a good start

A bad pass from a defender in the first minute of pre-season and some will be saying "I told you so" "woodgate out!".

If results are your endgame then of course

Prefer Martin Luther King’s approach
Judge someone by the ‘content of their character’

I’ve met him enough times thanks

I'd give it a couple of years, but with a performance "floor" built in.

Learn and develop, unless it's going as badly as Strachan, in which case we can't afford it.

You need 10 games minimum. A new approach could be coached in the pre season but could take up to 3 months to take effect.

I remember reading Monk saying how hard it was to coach 'karanka' out of the side he inherited.

To be honest a good start is great but you can kinda get away with it in the champo. You can be 10th in November and still go up.

Chips on shoulders left, right and centre about this proposed appointment often from those questioning character and achievements. They probably need to take an honest look at themselves in their own glass houses before throwing stones.

Good luck to the lad if it transpires. Steve Round is a good coach and will have a positive impact.

I’m actually looking forward to his press conference. I’ve met Woodgate a few times (he’s friends with my brother in law) but never really spoken to him about football. Will be interesting to hear what he has to say, and if he sets out his vision as he did in his interview, I expect we’ll all have a bit more confidence.

He wasn’t my first choice, but it looks like it’s him so can we all get behind him and give him a chance. We’ve had enough negativity with Karanka, Agnew, Monk and Pulis. This could be just what we need.

If not then I’ll support any old scumbag

I wont be able to like the guy even if we win the league. Ive had numerous run ins with him outside of football over the years and the guy is a grade A knob. Unless he has undergone a personality transplant i can only see him having a negative effect on the squad once he has the final word on everything.

Strewth there's some nonsense on here this morning!

Has there even been an official announcement yet?

Woody wouldn't have been my first choice but you have to give him a chance. He needs to rebalance the side, impose a style of play and perhaps even a mindset. We don't know how much money he will have to play with (probably not much)

Hell why not?

I think this is a very good point. If the plan is to build something over 5 years, we need to know this now. Otherwise people will expect us to be challenging for the top 2 and saying 'look its not working out' if we're not up there. We need to understand the method in the, I won't say madness, but the fairly unpopular decision at least.

Gaz - I disagree, a 6 game winning streak at the start would win a lot of people over, but it would also raise expectation, which could be detrimental, especially if Woody's objectives this season don't simply involve 'promotion any way you can' like Pulis' clearly were.

It was more a comment on the criteria used to judge people
For some - it is the bottom line, its performance, it is financial or sporting success
For others - it is character, values

You are right tho - its going to be a long summer. Could even be a long season [;)]

Not my first choice, but I support the club and I’ll back him from the moment he’s announced. Hopefully he’ll get some decent buys and keep the support of the dressing room, something that I’d worry about.

These opinions on JW are drawn from urban myths which may or may mot have some truth. No smoke without fire and all that.

So Woody is judged on things he did years ago in Leeds and The Dickens.

Is this a sound basis to judge his potential as a football club manager.

Perhaps he has some football qualities. I'm sure Leeds thought so when he played for them back when they had a team in Europe, same thing at Newcastle too and Real Madrid must have thought he was worth investing in.

Are the Leeds and Newcastle links too hard to swallow?

So here we are folk judging him on his character, it's such a shame Steve Gibson hasn't had the chance to get to know him like some on here who knows someone who's cousin walked a dog past his house twice a week and got a great insight into his football managerial skills.

Me I'll turn up at the Riverside sit in my usual season ticket seat with the clubs supporters away from the new breed of keyboard supporters with their bottomless pit of money wishes and I'll support him and the team and pass some judgement around Christmas like he deserves.

have some of the doubters thought woodgate has seen the squad first hand and maybe told gibson exactly who he will keep, get rid off and then Gibson, who from the reserves looks upto getting some game time.
maybe he actually impressed Gibson with his plans if given the opportunity.

There are no 100% guarantees, even with experienced managers.

i remember season ticket holders throwing them away after boro lost to Fulham 1st home game under Charlton, look how that turned out.
