You must be similar age to me as that was the first time I remember watching one live, also with my Dad at home.

First one I saw in the flesh was Haye v Maccarinelli and it was grim. Started at 2am for the american audience and was over in minutes, no tubes running and getting back to central London was harrowing.

Alan Minter vs Marvin Haggler.
Wembley Arena watching on TV as a young boy.
Sure I was upset when the plucky british favourite got beat but too young to understand what a fabulous fighter Haggler was.

No need for the infamous bottling of the arena mind.[|)]

I've no idea what it would have been on the telly. I remember as a kid we would talk about the Ali fights the next day, but I doubt I would have seen anything of them. Live, it was Kaylor v Christie in '85 or rather whatever fight was first on the undercard.

What was your first ever boxing fight you seen?

Going back to my post about Minter/Hagler. I had it in my head that this was shown on BBC's Sportsnight. Having googled it I see that the fight was held on a Saturday evening but nowt was shown live in 1980.
Guess it must have been shown on a kind of 'Sportsnight Special' (the show was usually midweek) an hour or so after the fight?
Thing is it didn't matter that it wasn't live cos there was no interweb to find out what had happened......don't know if it was live on radio?
Anyone know anymore about this fight???

The first boxing I can ever remember was being taken to the Wilton ICI, Grangetown to watch amateur boxing with my grandad, dad, uncles and cousins. It will have been int the early 70's.

Boxing was always a big thing in the house with it being my dads favourite sport - he wasn't a lover of footy but always encouraged me to play.

What was your first ever boxing fight you seen?

lloyd honeyghan
Win 28–0
against...
Donald Curry
RTD 6 (12)

27 Sep 1986
Circus Maximus Showroom, Atlantic City, New Jersey USa

Won WBA, WBC, IBF, The Ring, and lineal welterweight title

At the time Curry was considered the best pound for pound fighter in the world and Honeyghan was given little chance by the majority of the media. He caused a major upset by dominating the fight, nearly dropping Curry in the second round, before Curry retired at the end of round six. At the press conference before the fight Curry had dismissed his little known and lightly taken British opponent, asking "Who is this ragamuffin?". Honeyghan thereafter adopted the title "Raggamuffin" or "Raggamuffin Man" with relish. Embracing his Jamaican heritage where a Raggamuffin is someone who follows 'Ragga' a kind of reggae dancehall rap music.
