When will we see female managers?

Seeing how the great game is attracting more females and is obviously rising in terms of skill and popularity, just wondering if anyone knows if there are any female managers crafting this skill at a professional level?

Something I’ve never really thought about until now. I’m sure there must be some out there. And there’s no reason why they can’t achieve greatness on an equal level

Keep the splitarrses away from the game altogether, they are for cooking, cleaning and fingering, anything else is a bonus to them

I think we'll see a few assistant coaches first, probably in America, American football already has some

LOL the only way they will get a job is it they open their legs first, it's how women operate

When will we see female managers?

Gradually. At some point, someone has to give one a chance.

It's difficult though. Darlington recently advertised that they welcomed female applicants. Obviously at the Conference North, they're at a low level, and will pay a relatively low salary. The issue of course, is that for a female to want to take that job, they'd probably have to leave a *better* paid job in the womens game, or otherwise not be considered qualified enough. Even at that level, a club is going to want a top female candidate, but why would a top female candidate want that job? At some point, i hope someone takes a plunge and has a go.

The issue is that further up the leagues, there is so much money at play, clubs are nervous of taking the plunge and it going horribly wrong.

So access is definitely an issue. A few female assistant managers etc would probably be a good start.

Sadly, one of the problems will be that whichever club takes the chance, the usual luddites will emerge. Maybe not at first, but the second the results maybe don't go the right way...

It's a gradual process, i suspect. We haven't even got access for minorities as managers right just yet.

probably go the same way as for men...

become good coaches, move to manage..
manage teams & move to better jobs..
show good motivational & leadership skills..
show good technical & tactical awareness..

look at how many ex-players in the mens game have tried & had at best limited success.. its a tough career for everyone..

I would argue that the women game is rising in terms of skill.
Ball control really is a very poor standard, goalkeeping no good, even at international level.

You'd think, in these days of quick managerial turnover, that some club would have taken a punt on Hope Powell. If you are used to bagging a couple of managers a season it's not much of a risk.

Women goalkeepers … they may as well play without one, have an extra outfield player. Or maybe get someone from women's rugby who is happy to throw themselves around a bit. Just a thought.

Really looking forward to the when we have a good coverage of both minorities and women in the game.

If they are good enough, get them in. Plenty of great female strategic thinkers out there, the problem (as with business) is the boys clubs who are scared of it happening

When will we see female managers?

I don't know that it's decades away. There has to be a point, either where a very good female manager ends up applying to a job way below her ability / pay grade just to prove they can cut it. Or, a club takes a chance on the positive PR it might provide.

Qualifications aren't a problem. Plenty of females have the same top badges, and there's no gender barrier to getting them. The issue is going to be getting the right person, for the right appointment.

Take Darlington again - is there a female candidate out there with the prerequisite knowledge of Conference North football, and the low end pro / semi pro players that would be needed to excel in the role? Maybe there is. Maybe they'd need a good scout to support them in that case - but that's more expense to a small club.

I don't think a Rooney rule to improve access is a bad thing at all. At least it gets them to the interview table, like minority candidates. From there, its up for the employer to decide who fits best.

I think when you've got a man without any prior mangerial experience managing the biggest job in the women's game, which is still significantly behind the men's game, then it's going to take a long time for any female candidates to be seen as a viable option in England.
If there are none deemed good enough to manage England's women, I can't imagine there'd be any that would be acceptable in the far more high pressure environment that is the men's game.

Then there's the very real issues with sexism that they'd no doubt face.
Look at the abuse Alex Scott gets just for being a pundit, compared to the abuse the first female manager in the men's game would get, it would pale in comparison.

From listening to ex-players talk about how they interact with a manager on a daily basis/training a lot of it seems to stem from respect of what they have done (on the pitch) and what they have achieved as a manager in the "mens" game.

Now unless a female manager has worked her way up the "mens" league and proved herself as a successful title winning manager for a few seasons, then it could be different. But I just cant see male elite footballers respecting a female manager with regards to her telling them what to do footballing wise, as she has no experience within the "mans" game.

If we are being brutally honest the ladies game has come on massively, but its lightyears away from the "mens" game and cant be treated the same, as much as we would like to. This isnt one bit about equality or sexism - this is purely about experience at an elite footballing level.

There's also Shelley Kerr, who's now in charge of Scotland's women but who did well in Scottish non-league in the men's game. She's got a decent reputation as a coach and there's been a few rumours about her being linked with men's jobs. Will be interesting to see what she does post World Cup this summer.

I was [trying to] listen/watch an MLS game recently here in the US where they had the whole commentary team made-up of females-- it was very tough on the ears-- not too mention the they babble on about each players mother and father, the situation with Iraq, or some issue with politics -- if our game goes down this route i'll be watching re-runs of the 2018WC forever.

I’d say it’s quite obvious MM. We’ve been conditioned to think it’s “odd” to watch women play football, we’ve never had that with tennis as the women’s game has been embraced for a much longer time.

This isn't meant to sound patronisong but its a fact.

The problem they have ia that the standard of womens football is terrible. It is far less tactical and dependent on skill than the mens game. Most top womens teams would get battered in the 9th tier of mens football. Therefore if you are to take a chance on a female manager or ex female player moving over to the mens game, the relative level would be well below the conference north even.

Conversely, men who have managed and played at the highest level are well above the levels of women's football and therefore, rightly or wrongly, considered to be a better option in the womens game. Phil Neville is the perfect example, never managed a game in hia life and given the England Womens job, the pinnacle of Womens football management in this country.
