Cheers Abel. Going to take some serious thought this. Second last year, 2nd in the Spring Classics - becoming known as the bridesmaid of velogames.[:D]

Anyone know who is replacing Bernal as the GC leader for Sky (INEOS)?

I think they'd have to go with Kwiatoski, with both Froome and Thomas going for France.

Sivakov and Tao aren't quite there yet as GC contenders. Three TT stages would suggest Kwia could be a good option.

Depends on Ineos's ambitions I guess.

Dunbar is a good prospect, but at 22 and having never ridden a three week tour he's not gonna be their leader.

Likewise, Kwia may prefer the TdF but he's only gonna be their 3rd choice Captain at that race.

If Kwia doesn't go, that leaves Henao, Tao and Sivakov as potential GC riders imo.

Two spots up for grabs. Maybe 2 out of Dunbar, Diego Rosa, Kwia.

Suspect Team Ineos will write the Giro off as winnable and concentrate on the other two. Tao and Sivakov won’t have the experience to challenge seriously although stage wins will be a target of course. Disappointed that the Twitteratti are dubbing them “Team Intravineos” with gossip about Moscon and the doc in Austria who was involved with the now suspended Preidler and Denfl.

Anyway. This should be a great GT. Roglic v Nibali v Landa v Lopez v Chaves.

Buddy, I was stationed about 30m from there, just inside the Piece Hall west gate ... best place for photos. I did come up the road earlier when the Ineos bus rolled in but got a bit bored and went back to my favourite spot. It would have been nice to bump into you. Halifax ... and the west yorks pennines ... looked fantastic I thought.

Hendries, I agree re. Dunbar, but bear in mind he's older than Sivakov I think. Sivakov has no chance in GC. The field is too well stacked. Kwiat would have a shout with all the ITT miles ... but I don't see him hanging with the likes of Yates, Lopez, Landa or Nibali in the high mountains. This route should suit Dumoulin, but he hasn't looked great so far this year.

It's going to be an interesting race. Going to be an interesting velogames competition too.

Dumoulin is a dark horse and the unknown in this year’s Giro. He was 4th at Tirenno Adriatico which was won by Roglic and missed most of the classics season to concentrate on his Giro build up. Not to be written off.

I managed to see the TDY five times on Sunday. The start; the run out towards Queensbury (accidentally, due to a routing XXXXXX-up); the descent from Barden Moor (nobody talking in the peloton apart from Cav chuntering away to anyone who would listen); the first 200m of the climb out of Pateley Bridge; and the finish.

I'd have been happy with three, so I was pretty impressed with that.

Viviani is priced according to the likely results ... but is he value? This is a pretty stacked field all round.... it's a tricky one. I'm happy enough with my choices ... until they fall off their bike, which is usually what happens in the Giro. Buddy, I have picked two!

It is a very competitive field I'll give you that.

You'd expect Yates to want to prove a point, Lopez looks a strong contender, Roglic is bang on it and you have to think Doumoulin has had the Giro targeted.

I watched a recce of the opening TT and there could be a few big gaps even though it's not a long TT.

There’s 5 flat stages and 2 MM stages which a sprinter may win. So a third of all the stages are suited to the fast men. 250 points for a stage win it is pretty useful to have a decent sprinter.

The 1st stage prologue is done. I took the opportunity during the stage to take a look at all the FMTTM teams.

So here's some stats.

BIG NAME TEAM LEADERS
Tom Dum and Simon Yates come out as the most popular riders, with Yates just edging it.

Of the Sprinters, Viviani and Ackerman were most popular. Demare and Nizzolo were quite unpopular.
Dumoulin - 12
Yates - 13
Roglic - 9
Nibali - 6
Lopez - 7
Viviani - 6
Majka – 4
Landa - 3
Demare – 1
Gaviria – 2
Ewan – 3
Nizzolo – 1
Ackerman - 7

COMBINATIONS
It's been really tricky to build a team for this Giro. Swapping out one rider for another has a knock on effect through cost and only being able to pick so many riders of certain disciplines.

Tom Dum & Yates were the most popular combo. Several managers managed to get three top riders in to their teams, and one manager even managed 4 GC riders.

Dumoulin & Yates - 4
Dumoulin & Roglic - 1
Dumoulin & Nibali – 1
Dumoulin & Lopez - 1
Yates & Roglic – 2
Nibali, Roglic & Yates – 1
Yates, Lopez & Dumoulin – 1
Roglic, Majka & Landa - 1
Roglic, Lopez & Majka – 1
Dumouling, Landa & Majka – 1
Dumoulin, Yates & Landa - 1
Lopez & Nibali – 1
Roglic & Lopez - 1
Roglic & Nibali - 2
Yates & Lopez – 1
Yates & Majka – 1
Lopez, Nibali, Landa & Yates - 1

One team also managed a sprinter combo of two big names, not many teams have got two sprinters never mind two top sprinters.

Viviani & Ewan - 1

YOUNG UPSTARTS
The most popular pick was Ineos's Sirakov, fresh from winning the Tour of The Alps.

Madouas - 2
Masnada - 4
Sivakov - 10

WENT WITH DE GENDT
Almost as many managers picked the man-machine Thomas De Gendt.

De Gendt - 9

THE OTHER BRITS (And Ireland)
Apart from Simon Yates, there's 4 other UK riders. Perhaps due to his Tour De Yorkshire ride, or perhaps due to price, Dunbar is the most popular.

Knox - 1
Carthy - 2
Tao - 3
Dunbar - 5

AND YES CRAPAZ
Did pick Carapaz

INTERESTING TEAMS

Dr Doof ... has Lopez, Dumoulin, Yates, Viviani. And will be hoping for KoM opportunties from from Masnada and Hirt.

Quizzical ... has Roglic, Lopez, Majka, Ackerman And will be looking to De Gendt and Dunbar for side points.

Cardiffdaffs ... looks strong with Tom Dum, Roglic, Ackerman, then young stars Madouas and Masnada. As well as possible KoM men De Gendt and Hirt.

Simon Brown ... has Nibbles, Roglic, Masnada, and Ackerman. He will need big rides from Carthy and De Gendt in the mountains.

Just A Kiwi ... has Nibbles, Roglic, Masnada, Oomen and Viviani. Will be looking to Gallopin and Conti for stage wins.

A COUPLE MORE LEFT FIELD TEAMS

Monsieur Rayman ... has Nibbles, Roglic and Yates all for GC but 3 CCC Riders as back up.

Phil G ... is the freak with Yates, Lopez, Nibali and Landa for 4 GC riders. But then some oldies including Hansen and Modolo as back up.

Jumbo Visma are going to be tested like hell this first week and a half unless they just decide to let a breakaway go tomorrow and cede the leader's jersey. Taking time is good. Taking (and feeling obliged to defend) the leader's jersey so early is tough. I binned Roglic late on so maybe I'm looking through distorted glasses, but I don't see him winning after today.

Roglic has momentum. Winner of Tirenno and Romandie which were both tough week long races. He’s also done it three week tours. Top 4 TdF. Maybe too hot too soon?

Interesting tactic by our early leader to use his budget on Yates, Roglic and Nibbles. He must have a weaker back up squad? The next few stages won’t suit him. It’s a dead patch for the GC.

Anyone with Mareczko should be delighted ... he has been chuffin useless so far this year. It'll be close this year but we're all playing GC feckup roulette. It'll be about who implodes/crashes/misses a split rather than who is the best ... that's the way I see it anyway. The good thing about this competition is that it makes long, dull flat stages more intriguing.

Roglic didn’t get caught in it. Yates did. Caused by Sivakov crashing in the Peloton.

Neither Tao nor Sivakov guilty for this one - was Salvatore Puccio from Ineos who crashed, they called it wrong at the time on Eurosport. Carnage, one of the Katusha riders ended up with horrific injuries: collarbone and three ribs broken and lung contusions, shocking.

Apparently there was another big crash just after that wasn't caught on camera. Simon Yates dinked Landa into a roundabout and Landa called him a "retard" in today's Spanish press, ha!

GC lottery is right, goes to show the luck you need to get through one of these tours.

Viviani and Ewan have already indicated their Giro will end after tomorrow’s stage and Ackermann might do likewise if not overnight now. There is just one sprinter stage left after tomorrow’s Stage 11

Yates is sufficiently far back in the race for pink that he'll have to attack at some point so he might garner you some points.

I would think there’s more than an even chance the break will make it today depending on who makes it on. With a big stage tomorrow I wouldn’t think the GC boys would want to expend any energy chasing it down. If the break make it to the summit ahead by anything over a minute they won’t be caught.

As Cardiff predicted the break did indeed stay away but perhaps the most significant action was not amongst the stage leaders but in the GC battle behind. Roglic looked distinctly isolated and may suffer for having no decent support now in the mountains ( with the late withdrawal of Gesink and the drop out of De Plus. MA Lopez and Landa did look good so this Giro is far from over.

The only change of note in the Top Ten was the drop down of Hairingtons replaced in the top 3 by Buddy.

Tomorrow should be very interesting.

GCN uploaded a video today of the climb up the College del Nivolet and the snow coverage was still very deep. The high mountains and the descents through snow banks could be phenomenal over the coming days. Hopefully they get the Gavia and the Mortirolo clear.

Perhaps the organisers should check out Ian Bibby's tweet below for inspiration if they plan on having any more pan flat stages like we've suffered in the first week.

The riders could get a bit of a workout and do their bit for the environment pulling wheeliebins.

Why did they wait so long into the race before setting a proper mountain stage?

Crashes aside, plenty of days so far when not a great deal of interest has happened.

Really enjoyed watching yesterday - all over the place as you say. Sad to see Tao G-H and James Knox abandon yesterday. Joined by Nizzolo Renshaw and Kluge.

Worth looking at the top 7 scores for the stage given this was the first big GC climbers day. Possible indication that some of the current lower half squads will come to the fore now.

The cream only emerges after Stage 21 the way this is going and we are two thirds in now. Second rest day allows us to take stock. And Carapaz looks good with a strong supporting cast and Roglic isolated in the mountains. Yates also coming stronger. It’s going to be a fascinating final week and we all know it takes one bad day in the mountains to change things completely.

Pierre has taken a strong lead now but no doubt that the table is taking a different shape from the first half of theTour.

Whether he would have won the stage if Vendrame hadn't dropped his chain twice is the question as he was finishing faster. The 7th time in 8 stages that the break has made it. Quite extraordinary that the breaks are involved with all the glory and the GC battle is taking place further down the field. All Carapaz has to do now is ride on the wheel of Roglic and Nibali to defend his lead. Roglic surely won't be able to take over two mins off Carapaz in the TT.

These results mean our league is closer than it probably should be. Top score on the stage was Dood bt Pierre has taken back the lead. Just two stages left. Surely the GC will prevail tomorrow?

It's tough at the top. [smi]

I could only watch the early part of the stage today just as the break was establishing itself. Carboni was chasing alone for 30kms and I was willing him on as he was my main chance of taking back the lead. Fortunately he made it but knackered himself in the process. Still, 4th place was enough. More twists to come though.

It's been so frustrating watching Landa effectively used as a domestique for Carapaz.

I doubt this was the plan entering the Tour. Todays stage is perfect for Landa but Movistar aren't going to let the shackles off him unless Carapaz falls apart.

Todays stage surely won't be a breakaway win. Nibali, Lopez and Roglic all needing significant time is going to force their teams to keep the tempo high and try to isolate Carapaz/Landa.

Yesterday's stage was exactly the reason I picked Chaves. Not the specific stage, but the idea that a frustrated leader was more likely to win than a typical mountain breakaway candidate like Joe Dombrowski that I've spent three years picking with no reward.

Still don't think I've got a stage win myself though.

Chaves wouldn’t have been free to do that if Yates was challenging I think. He would have been on minding duty? Anyway there’s a possibility that the break will prevail again today given the personnel in it. Ridiculous if so. GC don’t want to win stages.

It has been a good giro to watch and I'm happy that I had the two key riders: Carapaz and Ackerman. Happy with the other picks too (just unlucky with Dumo) ... apart from one or two which cost me dearly. I shipped Masnada out at the last minute to rejig and bring in Dunbar. Although Dunbar has done OK, Masnada was outstanding. Pretty happy to be up there considering I was effectively a man down from week 1. Izaguirre has been desperately disappointing.

It has been an ok Giro (not enough GC battles for stage wins for me) but a great Velogames competition. Although Dumo going early doors ended any hopes of a challenge from me, it didn’t take long to understand that Carapaz was a great differential pick, good to see PQR and Abel slugging it out at the top and the lead changing hands almost daily.

Good luck both today.

That first week spoilt it I think, not enough action for the GC contenders to establish themselves and I honestly believe that those "nothing" stages took their toll on the riders legs.

That being said though, it opened up our competition to those who made some really smart picks such as Masnada who siezed the opportunities to get in breaks and push on. For myself, I took too many gambles on the likes of Modolo and Jungels coming into form. All good fun though [^]

I’m with dood in rating this as a disappointing Giro, the organisers got the whole balance wrong. I can’t think of a stage that will stick in my mind this year. Fortunately I had the time to put a team in the league and actually follow it, which has been impossible in recent years and that kept the interest up on some of those pretty dull stages. Being a contender really helped too as a change from struggling mid-table (we should all know about that), so cheers Abel for organising it.

Agree, not the best Giro. Just one or two GC stages in that first 10 days coulda really spiced it up.

I made one good risk pick with Masnada, but Ben O'connor, Oomen, Battaglin and Jungels all had nightmares and maybe I picked them too much based on last year.

I think that there'll be growing calls for more combative days in the grand tours after this. On the one hand you've had/got Sky/Inios almost strangling GC's with their strength in depth and then you've got what are really just long transitions diluting races down to a few key stages.

I'd be quite happy to see several shorter stages if it meant riders still had it in the tank to attack the GC and weren't hanging on so much due to unnecessary junk kilometers. I don't want them to go too far down the route of removing the physical challenges of a three week tour though so it'll be a careful process of trial and error if the UCI persue changes.

Well that's it. Thanks all for playing. It's probably been our closest competition we've had. I am still waiting for confirmation as to whether there will be a Tour de France Velogames this year. It is not listed on the schedule and many will recall that it was pulled last year because of intellectual property issues. If it is pulled then Ill try and set up an alternative fantasy game (probably Road CC Fantasy).

In the meantime a new Velogames starts next Sunday for the Criterium du Dauphine. If anybody is at all interested please say and I'll set it up.

Congratulations! Bilbao proved an inspired pick in the finale - I chose the wrong Astana man. Great fun though.

Abel - worth noting that you increased the gap to me by about 400 points on the "end of tour" allocations, because I had both de Gendt and Bilbao as well. In the end I think it was actually Masnada and Nibali that made the difference for you.

Buddy yes am not underestimating the value of those two picks and Nibbles podium and all round contribution was a factor in keeping me away from you both. Also the fact that the break made it on so many stages happened to be favourable. Thanks again everybody.

I was quite hopeful this year, alas my comp was over in the first week. Congratulations to the winner

Excellent competition chaps, thanks like always to Abel for organising.

Gash performance of my Velogames team softened by having $3 on Pello Bilbao winning the queen stage at 88/1.

I'm always up for a bit of fantasy cycling so appreciate Abel's efforts. I'm in for the TdD too.

Thanks and well done Abel. A worthy winner. I'm happy with my score given Dumo's early demise and Izaguirre's abject performance. I hope the tour Velogames is ok ... I'll pitch in on Dauphine if I have chance.
