Hopefully no-one hurt (most importantly) but will be awful if such a historic treasure is lost.

It seems to have started among the renovation work so unlikely to be anything other than an accident.

Pictures there of the firefighters high up on the walls, I would get them down, let it burn, it is only a building.

I agree that it’s not worth the life of 1 fire fighter, buts it’s definitely more than a building. Think about all of the little independent cafes and shops around it that are dependant on the tourism.
If the ‘building’ goes, so does a lot of people’s livelihoods [|)]

As awful as this is let’s not forget our very own York minister face a similar fate and now looks as spectacular as it once did.

Latest from Paris is that the main structure remains intact and that the police save they have saved the building.

I’m working over in Paris and was at La Défense when I noticed a load of smoke in the air, I was on the phone to my Mrs at the time and said that something was going on but too early for fireworks, I then got a text through asking if I was anywhere near Notre Dame, checked the news on my phone and saw what was happening, this was about half 7.

The main structure of the building is intact and the roof and spire will be rebuilt, no lives according to French news sources have been lost although one firefighter has been injured, the artwork and artefacts has been saved, it’s an awful thing but could have been much worse.

Apparently they actually plan for such events, and there's a protocol.

Save the people, save the art, save the altar, save whatever furniture is possible, then finally save the structure.

Which seems to be roughly what has happened, but unfortunately, i'm sure some art, furniture, relics and whatever else irreplaceable will have been lost in a first that size. Most of the stained glass will be gone, if not all of it. It seems some of the outer structure has survived anyway.

Am thinking of the medieval stained glass and that rose window. It is so rare in this country where The Reformation and then Cromwell got rid of most of it. But it was awesome in Notre Dames. Was amazed to see late last night much of the structure of the stone roof vaulting had survived.
But it was truly horrible to watch. One of the world's most iconic buildings engulfed in flames, so terribly sad to see.

I was listening to some "expert" on the radio this morning. He reckoned that fires in Medieval Cathedrals were not uncommon and that the structures were essentially designed to survive the loss of the roof. If you think of the monastic ruins we have nearby (Rievaulx, Fountains, etc) they lost their roofs in the reformation 500 years ago yet the walls are impressively largely intact. So I suppose that makes sense. The roof was not inetgral to the structural integrity of the building it just kept the congregation dry. Also, back in the day, your cathedral was lit by candles and heated with fires, decorated with rich cloths etc. Fires would happen.

If the structure is safe they can carry out the restoration work that was needed to the fabric of the building before replacing the roof. It'll be interesting what they do with the spire which was a relatively recent (200 years) addition.

Just pleased there were no fatalities.

That is interesting. But many abbeys like Rievaulx had massive restoration in the early 20th century to keep the walls upright. It was part taken down and rebuilt with girders inside the walls.
I was trying without success to find photos - saw it in a documentary about the old Ministry of Works (English Heritage).
But those ruins do well not to fall on top of people don't they.

It makes sense a guss that the roofs with their wooden girders would be vulnerable and the stone walls not so much. Yes though, I presume the rose window has gone, that’s a damn shame, so pretty.

I’d be intrigued to know what other artefacts had been destroyed. I’m hoping they removed a lot of stuff for the renovation work.

Even ignoring the "restorations" in the C20th they stood for 400 years without a roof. I didn't catch the guy's name but it sounded logical to me that in medieval times a fire would remove the roof but the structure would stand without it.

It is a shame about the stained glass windows, I suppose we will have good documentation of them so that they can be accurately replicated?
