Richmond, County Durham.

At the risk of starting another Teesside/North Yorkshire type thread, I see that Durham CCC are playing one of their second eleven county championship matches at Richmond this summer.

Has Richmond ever actually been in Durham?

No - but I can understand why Durham would want to be associated with North Yorkshire [8)]

Richmond postcode is DL10. Bedale postcode is DL8 .
Both are in North Yorkshire.

Yorkshire play a game at York in June and will play a game there for the next 3 years. Yorks firsts only play in Yorkshire and have not played outside Headingly (which they own) and Scarborough since 1996.

Could be that the postcode is a Darlington (DL) one which makes it ok to play there. Lovely ground plus a cracking wicket.

Edit: just seen your above post streetwise

A lot of towns that are the administrative centre have post code relating to other counties.

They've played at Gosforth and Jesmond before, trying to attract more support maybe.

Plenty of county cricket teams play, or have played regularly outside of their historic county.

Examples -

Hampshire at Bournemouth
Middlesex at Shenley and Radlett
Derbyshire at Sheffield
Somerset at Torquay
Gloucestershire at Swindon
Glamorgan at Llandudno and Aberystwyth

I guess you can move the cricket to where the people are.

Richmond is very much in Yorkshire.
South part of Barny (Startforth south of the Tees) was historically North Riding - boundary moved in 1967 to put all of Barnard Castle on the dark side.

Didn't Yorkshire play at Stockton not so long back?

that's a good point - Hampshire at Bournemouth - speak to traditional Dorset folk and they will tell you that Bournemouth is NOT in Dorset, its in Hampshire.....

I saw a band once from Dorchester and they sang a song about it...little did I know from the reaction and comments that it was a common held view......

Some of the boundaries and names are all over the place especially in Wales. Glamorgan seem to play anywhere in Wales. I remember Gareth Sobers hitting six 6s in Swansea for Notts against Glamorgan. Has Swansea ever being in Glamorgan?

Gloucestershire and Somerset both used to play in Bristol even though Bristol was in Avon for a lot of years.

Former Yorkshire Venues

Sheffield
Hull
Beverley?
Huddersfield
Middlesbrough
Harrogate
Bradford

Good. We can delete that match (and over) from the records!

For me the issue here isnít playing in another county, seems itís happens a lot (I have seen Durham play at Stockton when I was younger)

Itís the fact they are playing in another county with a big cricket history and a historically important team. Seems a bit odd.

By the way its no longer Durham *CCC*, its just Durham Cricket. They've had a full rebrand 'for the north' presumably to encapture Cumbria, Northumberland and the Tees Valley folk who are more bothered about administrative borders than ancient ones.[:D]

is someone telling me that they play county cricket in durham ?...never [:D]

Durham played a 2nd team fixture at Seaton Carew, they also played at Stokesley. Neither are in Durham.

Yorkshire binned Middlesbrough a while back but still play 2nd team games at Marske.
