Just hit the ball as hard as you can to the flag then play it gently into the hole, can't be that easy

LeeTublin, I'm such a bad tipster that I'll give you the chance of a lifetime. I'll bet I can make a profit from 30 tips and I'll lay you evens to ANY mount of money you like that I can do so. How much would you like to wager? Name your own reasonable conditions for the bets and their validation and the organisation or person to hold the funds. I take it you will put up or shut up.

Only played twice on holiday, enjoyed it thoroughly for around 9 holes and found it very difficult, I would imagine to develop the skills and attributes to be good at it you have to start very young.

Biggest thing is to keep a level of interest for the length of time you are out there, very similar to creosoting a fence.

Actually going by the saying that I once heard the OP is half right. The saying was

Golf is one of the easiest games in the world to play, But one of the hardest to play well.

That is so very true, NorthoftheRiver!

I only took up golf when I retired as it is certainly time consuming. What is so good, is that with the handicap system I can have a reasonable game with players who are much better. 4 hours walking in the fresh air and the time passing so quickly in beautiful surroundings, what is not to like even if you have a bad round.

Golf is one sport where you cannot hide, good players will always come through.Very rare for a novice or amateur to pull off a shock win, let alone a tournament, against players who have made scratch. Even the seasoned players who are off less than 5 would struggle against the pros. The women pro's are good but no where near as good as the men.

A bandit playing off some made up handicap might play a blinder, avoid the sand and sink a few long range putts but over 18 holes not many make the final cut in the 3 day comps. Every now and again an unknown may lead after one day but Rory and Co wont fail given it is their full time job. Films like 'The Legend of Bagger Vance' and 'Tin Cup' are fairy tales.

Woods achievement was astonishing but he has won many comps in the past and is vastly experienced. I was very impressed with him during the Ryder Cup. This Indian summer to his career is an inspiration to all the journeymen pros who make up the numbers and are generally packing the clubs after one day.

I'd urge anybody to take up golf if they haven't already, there really isn't much cons to it. Good exercise, good for your mental health, sociable and addictive.

I've been playing since the age of 3 and kick myself that I didn't really push on with it during my teens. I enjoy every round that I play regardless of how I'm playing, as Seve always said "the great thing about golf is that you'll always hit that one shot that will make you come back tomorrow".

Its a rich mans game, the municiple courses are ok but to join a decent club will set you back around £750 and that is BEFORE you purchase the Pings and Rupert Bear trousers.

It's a rich man's game eh EP.......whereas an adult season ticket to the Riverside costs errrrrrrr....how much?

And for your season ticket, generally speaking, you get an hour and a half of torture on a satdee afty, but golf membership gets you as much golf as you can fit in, 6 days a week, cos satdee is competition day (or match day)!

Considering Golf is a hobby (for most) I would consider it one of the more expensive things to do in comparison to joining a club for squash, tennis, cricket, rugby.

The courses around here are pretty reasonable but down south I wouldnt fancy the monthly tribute.

You get what you pay for though, the greens at Teesside Golf Club look like a snooker table.

Golf is a sport, the same way footy is a sport.

To say golf is a hobby, is like saying Sunday morning footballers just have a hobby!

The point I was making was about money....seeing as you seem to think only the rich elite can play golf.

Your view would make every season ticket holder (who bought their own, or multiple tickets) a rich elite.

In reality, we all scrimp and save, and sacrifice, in order to buy the things we want.

Only an elite few are actually rich!
