It feels strange to miss someone so much that I barely knew. Thanks to my dad knowing him, he signed his autobiography for me congratulating me on my first goal in senior footy. Lovely bloke and missed dearly.

A cracking tribute for a lovely man.

I think a lot of us can relate when reading that, as that is how we would all like to be remembered.

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I have recordings of all of his Boro commentaries.

He described it as we all saw it.

An excellent tribute. I wish so much that Ali was still around.

"I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I have recordings of all of his Boro commentaries."

Do you know how many matches in total? I'm guessing a lot!

I remeber a few seasons back he received a signed shirt on the pitch when he had done his 1000th Boro commentary, all from 1983 I think, not so much a commentary back then but a news match bulletin from the ground for Rdio Cleveland

Ali kept all his recordings. I remember interviewing him many years ago in his loft where he had boxes of cassettes containing his commentaries. He would listen back afterwards and take notes so as learn from mistakes etc.
I believe he moved house after that so whether he took his archive with him and had a loft studio space I don't know. But he was a perfectionist. He might have been off the cuff with many remarks but it was because he had also done so much homework first and that included listening and learning from his own broadcasts.

It does work out as over a thousand but not as many as might appear to be the case because it wasn't really until the Riverside years that there was commentary on every match.

I should also say that for a lot of them I only have the second half because that's all that would fit onto one side of a C90 cassette while I was at the match!

McMordie - do you have the recording of his last commentary vs Hull City away? I'd love a copy of this as my son was mascot that day and I don't know if Ali read out his name on air after I had emailed him if he could.

backofthenet - I will have but it will take me some time to find it amongst all the others because they're not all labelled properly.

If you know the date I'll do my best.

It was the 7th November 2015. No worries if it's too much work 👍
