Ghosts do you believe in them?

I've seen a three things I can't really explain.

Once I was half asleep, dark figure lying on the floor, I was about 10, so put that one down to brain playing games, but I screamed the house down and had my Dad searching the house for an intruder.

Second time and the most unexplainable, I was 14, wide awake, about 8pm, sitting in my bedroom on my Atari, bedroom door open, looking onto a long corridor, we lived in a bungalow at the time. I turned around as I seen a white figure, I didn't think much of it and shouted "Mam, make us a cup of tea" as I got up and followed her. I was convinced it was my Mam in her white dressing gown. I went into the kitchen, light off, nobody in there, shouted Mam again. Nothing.
Went back along the long corridor to the front room, Mam n Dad sat watching the TV. Asked if they'd just been in the kitchen. Both said no. Nobody else in the house apart from my brother in the bedroom nextdoor at the time, I asked him if he'd just been in the kitchen. Again no.
I was wide awake, and nothing on my mind except playing Space Invaders.
No idea what all that was about?

Third time, Grandad had just died, I was 16, I swear he was next to my bed, he sunk down as if the floor wasn't there, I could smell him too. Very strange.
I was half asleep, and he was obviously on my mind, so I put that one down to brain playing tricks.

I'm still sceptical, but struggle to explain the second one.

The reason i lasked if it was clothed is because surely a ghost should appear as naked as clothes have never “lived” or “died” and have no “soul” , so surely shouldn’t appear on a “ghost”.

Had 2 ghostly experiences, the first one could be dismissed as imagination as I was about 8yo and on a landing during the night- saw a man ghost climbing up a ghost ladder into the roof space. The other was on a saturday afternoon and I had a witness who also saw it. Driving along a dual carriageway I suddenly had to swerve to avoid a car joining from the left even though it was all barriers and there was no road it could have come from. I pulled over and me and my passenger looked behind and the car had stopped, the driver was basically a badly burnt body. It disappeared just like that.

I'm an open minded sceptic. Im still not sure I believe in them, even though I've definitely 'seen' one. Hard to explain why, and a long story.
I've also had some very strange experiences/witnessed things that had no logical explanation and could easily be attributed to ghosts, if there is such a thing.
And yet I still can't be nailed down on whether I believe or not.Weird.

Something happened when I was 8. We were staying in a Farmhouse in Ireland, and I remember seeing an old lady in a wheelchair pass by the bottom of my bed. The next thing, a big dog came running at me, barking.

I remember sitting up and trying to scream, but I actually couldn't, and the next thing my Mam and Dad walked into the room, which made me think they must have heard me screaming, even though I couldn't actually hear myself screaming.

It probably was a dream but it felt so real at the time, and to this day I can't say for sure whether it was just a dream or not.

Funky, if you saw a naked ghost it would not necessarily put the willy’s up you [;)]

I have seen a ghost, I am convinced of it, a good long while ago mind, but not since. I do get the argument about clothes and also why nobody ever sees a ghostly animal. Sounds implausible but maybe we only see our own kind? Rationally it is probably our subconcious mind meeting our concious mind and projecting an image, who knows.

Aliens do exist by the way. We cant be the only planet with lifeforms. Don’t forget, to aliens, we are aliens remember too

It always intrigues me, same with aliens. I know my dad saw one when he was younger at the bottom of his bed and when he described her to his mum she said it was a perfect description of his aunt he’d never met.

Also wasn’t there someone on here who’d woken up on someone’s sofa in the middle of a Victorian party or something that just vanished? Or went to a toilet that wasn’t there I seem to remember

No evidence in aliens for five billion years, therefore they don't exist?

Exactly how long do you think evidence has been able to be gather scientifically about aliens? Can't imagine a T-Rex doing it, personally, what with those puny little arms.

It's arguable whether we even have the technology now, given we've only been in space for just over half a century. We are presuming that any contact or evidence is going to be in a form we understand, interpret and are looking for.

There was no evidence for a lot of things for billions of years, and then suddenly we were able to discover stuff. What a nonsense claim.

For ghosts, almost all "evidence" is gathered through people's eyes (funnily enough, such evidence also exists for aliens too). Scientifically, such claims are very shaky - what discovery is only based on "I saw it, therefore it's true". Nothing scientific or empirical has discovered anything.

And our eyes are very, very unreliable. You might trust them, but what we're actually seeing comes through our brains first, and our brains are weird. You only have to go look at an optical illusion to see how easy it is to trick our visual senses.

As for ghosts, I don't believe them. I don't trust that what eye-witnesses are seeing is an actual person returned from the dead. That's a pretty big logical jump, overturning every natural law and physical law we know of, for something you've glimpsed.

What's more, what are human beings, generally, more afraid of then death? Just like stories of the afterlife, ghosts are a way of rationalising and adding some theory behind something we can't - and probably never will - answer, which is what happens to us after we die.

It seems to me most of the ghost sightings people claim to have seen while sleeping are classic sleep paralysis with maybe some lucid dreaming. The ghost (often a grandparent) and the not being able to scream or move are very common. I bet loads of people on here have had at least just sleep paralysis at some point.

I’ve seen ghosts and other spooky things when I’ve had sleep paralysis but I know what it is and can recognise it happening on the rare occasions I get it now. My wife used to suffer terribly from sleep paralysis and the the things her mind would conjour up were terrifying!

I’ve seen a few things that I couldn’t explain, and don’t know if it was ghosts as such, but the one thing that did freak me was with my niece, when she was about 3 or 4. She said that there was a woman at the top of their stairs. There was no one else in the house. About 6 months later, my sister and brother in law sold the house to a young couple, and a few weeks after they'd moved in their child of a similar age said the same that there was a woman standing at the top of the stairs. Again there was no one else in the house.

I haven't seen a one, but when I was kid I left my bedroom one evening and went to see where my mam was as I needed to ask her something. I went to check her bedroom and as I tried to open the door, the door handle started shaking uncontrollably like there was someone on the other side resisting it.

I went down stairs, really freaked out and my mam was sat watching TV in the front room. We were the only ones in the house. Still to this day I can't explain what that.

Haven't seen one but have had experiences I cant explain.
Used to have a book shelf above my bed and all the books fell off it when I was in bed but none hit me. An old style LP case fell over for no reason. And when I was about 16 me and our mam were tidying my bedroom (as mams insist), and a musical christmas card that I had kept started playing away in a box the wardrobe. Our mam went white.

My uncle had died in my bedroom the year before I was born. Nothings happened since then though as far as I know.

Lemmy, that reminds me actually. A couple of years ago I was staying at an ex girlfriend's just outside of Glasgow. It was around Christmas time and we had bought a Christmas tree shaped biscuit tin from M&S which could be wound up and played Jingle Bells. We were in bed and the tin was in the front room. During the middle of the night we were both woken up to the sound of Jingle Bells playing and the tin slowly rotating. I've never been so freaked out in my life. I ran downstairs and threw it in the outside bin. Turns out her flat was built where a maternity hospital used to lie. It was nicknamed the 'Butcher's Shop' [xx(]

Interesting topic.

Not sure myself but given the sheer volume of witness testimonies it is difficult to ascertain whether they are just imagination.

On the other hand some of the CCTV footage is questionable to say the least.

I know a couple of lasses who see them all the time and talk about it without any embarrassment. Neither are fantasists.

If there is any evidence then the Enfield Case is probably one of the more credible accounts although sceptics do a pretty good job in convincing otherwise.

Ghosts do you believe in them?

We lived a terraced house in Darlo. We put the house up for sale while I was working away. The wife dealt with everything and eventually the house was sold.
We were (and still are) best friends with our next door neighbour and we often visit her.
On one of the visits the lady who lives in our ex house asked us if we had seen or heard anything in the house.
"No", we replied, "why do you ask?".
"I keep smelling perfumes, which I do not wear, whisky and cigarette smoke, Also I keep feeling as if I am not alone, as if someone else is in the house."
Well, we were the second owners of this house and we bought it from a very young couple who had had it from new.
"Well", replied the lady,"there is something not right about this house, I am getting a medium in to investigate."
It was only when we got home that my wife remembered that the the present owner of the house was not the lady she sold the house to.The lady who bought our house happened to be fond of her drink and smoked very heavily. Two weeks after she bought our house she fell down the stairs and broke her neck, so, with me working away, I never actually met her.
The medium duly arrived on the same evening as when we had had our conversation with the owner. He had never been to the house before nor had he had previous knowledge of the events there.
The owner of the house said that the medium came into the house and immediately said to her that there was a lady in the house, she had died here from a fall and that she is very friendly. She only wants a drink and a cigarette.
I have no explanation for this but other other events that have happened in my life which I cannot explain either.

It depends on what you define as a ghost.
I saw with clarity a man walk across my Nanas' landing when I was 17. It was'nt my imagination or a trick of a light. I think we see glimpses of the past sometimes, given the right circunstances. I once heard my daughters' playset move on the baby monitor, when I went up it was in the doorway, my daughter fast asleep in her cot. Just brushed it off as one of those things.

I'm a sceptic and reckon any visions are take place in your own head, that's not to say these are not real, we know so little about the brain, in the same way as an DMT, LSD or mushroom trip can make you see or experience stuff that is not 'real' you are undeniably experiencing it.

I have never been to desired see a medium or clairvoyant but have heard sensible people rave about the accuracy of them. anyway one day a lass I worked with brought in a tape recording from her 'reading?'.... it was dreadful, she was so pleased with the 2 or three hits she got she ignored the dozens of misses, I genuinely thought with 6 months training I could have done a better job. obviously I smiled and let her have her comfort, I suppose they do charge for service that some need.

I can remember when I was a child being woken from my sleep by screaming. My door was ajar and I could see the silhouette of a black naked man walk across the landing. I knew it wasn't my dad as he was working nights at ICI.
Scared, I ran to my mam's bedroom but there was resistance on the handle as if someone was stopping me from opening the door. I ran to my older brothers room, woke him up and told him all about it. We gathered as much courage as we could and tiptoed back to Mam's room. This time there was no resistance on the handle and the door slowly opened to reveal a scene of poltergeist carnage. Clothes were strewn everywhere and the bed sheets were on the floor but Mam was nowhere to be seen. We both screamed and ran downstairs only to find Mam in the kitchen in her dressing gown having a cup of tea and a Regal king size.
She laughed at my story and told me I was probably dreaming it.
The next morning me and my brother got grounded after Dad accused us of stealing 2 cans of Harp from the fridge and the pools money from the fruit basket. To this day we both swear down neither of us took the cans or the money.
Some things just can't be explained

As someone with a scientific background I ahve tried to envisage a situation where such a thing can exist - not the least because my own great grandmother supposedly haunts the Yorkshire Lass in New Marske built on the site of her farm cottage.

I can envisage a situation where naturally occurring chemicals used in the photographic process might exist in isolated situations. I also know about the process of creating holograms by storing images on the crystal planes of specific molecules - again potentially a natural process.

Could a combination of the 2 processes occur naturally whereby an image might be stored across a crystal lattice equivalent to a hologram and be projected again if light falls on it at the correct angle?

Part of my house dates back nearly 300 yrs.
I was bathing my Grandaughter(3) a couple of weeks ago. Sat chatting, she was playing with her bath toys when she looked over my shoulder at the open bathroom door. Pointing her finger, "who's that Grandad? ". I turned to look, expecting it to be the wife. No one was there. I dismissed it and shouted down to the wife to sort some jammies for the bairn.
It was about a week later the my wife was telling me that she had heard the G'daughter in a one-sided conversation talking to someone in the kitchen. I suggested she was playing with her dolls but the wife said that when she went into the kitchen to see all was well the bairn was just stood looking out into the garden, no toys in sight. Spooky little sod. :-)

No Tom- The house owner did not know the name of the dead person so could not have told anyone. Neither did she know that a person had died in her house as she didn't move in till 6 months after the event, the house being stood empty for all of this time.
I too am cynical about mediums but I don't think that there is any doubt that something is going on somewhere. This particular medium did not charge so he was not on a money making mission.
So many strange things have happened in my life that I wonder if there is something like as you say a faulty synapse, another dimension, stone tape theory, glitches in time or any other myriad of explanations and theories, each just as valid as the next until reasons and causes can be found.

I'm not a believer as such but, as I've said on here before, I bought a house in Thornaby 30 years ago. As soon as we moved in I saw a dark shape at the bedroom window .. ran in no one there. You could hear footsteps upstairs people who stayed the night heard someone going up and downstairs during the night, door opening and closing, shadowy figures etc etc. One sunday morning a mate and I were sat talking when we both saw a shadow on the wall .. both looked at each other did you see that XXXXXXing hell blah blah blah. Sold the house and as I was moving out a guy from the next street said can I pop in not been here since my mate lived here in the 70s said yeah pop in .. As we were talking he was telling how the house used to be he says has anythig strange happened? I was like what sort of thing do you mean? He went on to tell me about a door that used to unlock itself at night, he saw it too and various other things. I told him about my stuff and described the shadow we'd seen .. I described the guy that lived in the house years before. I went white the bloke from round the corner said he couldn't believe it coz he was still alive and living in Sheffield at the time ...often see shadows in the corner of my eyeline in the office I work in now too!

Ghosts do you believe in them?

I’ve seen & heard things over the years & have a bit of an interest in stuff like this, but nothing solid.

I worked in a shop in Billingham years ago. Above the shop was a flat, which had been empty for some time. At the back of the shop was the `stock / Office / Safe area` (very dingy) I worked here for approx. 3 months (whilst at college) before I left. I worked with a colleague (let’s say Rob).

The safe was at the back of the shop & in dimly lit corner of the room, after cashing up, which we did nightly myself & Rob went to the safe, we would get feelings of being watched & the hair on our neck, arms etc. would stand on end, one night, Rob had come into the shop area & said `oh your there` he thought I was stood right next to him when he was putting the money away. The feeling of being watched was overwhelming...........to a point that we would `flip a coin` to see who would put the money in the safe, around this time it was common for us to do paperwork at the cash desk, instead of sitting at the desk in `the back` as that seemed just as bad.
Whilst working one day, I was at one end of the shop he at the other (this was a small shop so would say it was approx. 20 - 25ft ) we heard footsteps above us coming from the flat. We just looked at each other not knowing what to do & our first thought was burglars, so we went up (eventually)………searched the whole flat, nothing, no break in at all.

There would be taps & knocks & you’d see things `flit` past but nothing solid, just a shadow or dark shape I suppose. On one set of shelving we had Children’s Car seats These seats had been on these shelves for months, not moved unless the shelves where cleaned or a customer was interested, which both these things hadn't happened whilst id worked there, my colleague was talking to a customer in one corner of the shop, & I was near the cash desk.........a seat fell into the middle of the shop, we just nervously laughed whilst the customer was there, but when they left we tried to simulate what just happened. my colleague put the seat back on the shelf as it had been & then slowly touched it until it went over the edge of the shelf as then the weight carried it over..........each time it fell to the foot of the shelves & not the 10 - 15 feet it had `jumped` to before (wed practised it a couple of times)

We had one or two calls as the alarm was going off some nights & on each inspection nothing was a miss or broken. The only `sighting` was from Rob, he looked up one day near the shelving (I was out the back) & there was a fella in a cap stood there, Rob carried on doing what he was doing & shouted me, I came to the door & shouted `what` to which he looked up, saw me & this fella with the cap just `wasn’t there`!! he did say look outside is there a bloke with a cap on, I looked out & there was nobody around.

I left not long after this so not sure what happened to the shop or if anything else occurred.

I saw a dead baby ghost the other day.

Or it might have been a tissue.

(Ok, stolen joke).

Ghosts do you believe in them?

I'm going to save this thread so I know who not to take seriously on any matter in the future haha. Grow up people, there's no such thing as ghosts. The most simple explanation is always the case. Just because you don't know the answer doesn't make it paranormal. Not a single shred of evidence, or common sense in any of the stories.

At least aliens are a possibility. Extremely unlikely they've ever made their way here but the possibility of them existing in some capacity is pretty much a mathematical certainty.

'At least aliens are a possibility'

They got to get through the Van Allen Belt first. Sorry I just cannot see it.

‘Pretty much a mathematical certainty’.

Is it?

Based on what assumptions?

Basically just the numbers. There are so many galaxies/stars/planets in the universe that the chance that ours is the only one that has developed any sort of life is infinitesimally small.

If we assume that life grows under certain conditions then the fact that we are the only planet in the universe that match those conditions is unrealistic.

I don't even mean similar lifeform as us but any life form whatsoever. If there is then those lifeforms will evolve as we have seen here.

There is even an equation to estimate the number of intelligent species that we could contact in our galaxy, the Drake equation.
