This is without a doubt the most disturbing thing I have seen on TV.

Why the hell would:

- the parents let him sleep in a bed with their daughter?
- the father give him a hand job?
- the mother have an affair with the paedophile
- the mother send her daughter on a plane to his holiday camp?!

And the alien thing?!

I tried to explain the programme to someone recently but genuinely struggled [xx(]

The only, only thing I could think that they justified their actions by - they're Mormons.

I was watching this last week.

I could not believe what I was watching and what the parents were saying they did/allowed. The moment the Dad said he tugged the fella off I turned it off. It was getting so ridiculous I thought it was a spoof.

Sounds like it got even stupider?

Goodness me [sad]

Watched it today - Absolutely insane in so many ways.

I was more in shock at the parents than the nonce most of the time and he was about as insane as it gets.

I felt bad for watching and thinking the daughter was stupid for believing the alien story at 12 and going along with the mission but then when you see how stupid the parents are you can't blame her. The Mum having an affair with him after he's kidnapped her daughter though is just mental, how on earth are that family still talking to each other. There should be so much hatred built up but they all forgive each other. Crazy

The mother seems to smile when talking about the affair too. I think she's properly tapped in the head.

The girl believing the alien story was hard to watch. It was made worse by her wanting to marry him. She genuinely loved him. [sad]

Watched it last week with Mrs WeeGord and we were absolutely speechless. The danger signs were there straight away and the fact the parents were (wilfully?) blind to what was happening defied any sort of logic.

One of the most messed up things I have ever seen.

s!ovak you are so right, she was genuinely smiling every time she spoke about him. I bet if he was still alive today he could talk her back under the sheets. It was like she still believed he loved her more than her daughter or even husband for that matter

I've just watched it and I agree what someone else said in that I couldn't believe it's not a spoof in a Brass Eye-type way. That fella was pure evil and the parents absolutely mentally deficienct.

Someone put me onto it work and it sounded so ridiculous I had to watch. I was half expecting the parents to be obviously mentally disabled, So when I saw the whole family were passable as 'normal' it was a shock and made their naivety disturbing and unexplainable.

I can't buy that the world was so different 30 years ago, and I certainly can't buy that the nonce was this smooth talking dude that can kidnap someone's daughter, convince her she was an alein with the fate of the planet in her hands, get forgiveness in the community, buck her mother and get the dad to toss him off [?]

I watched it with a general sense of "wtf", but now I'm doubting the parents' stories.

I think they knew he was a nonce, and they let him abuse their daughter, either for money or something else. Nobody is naive enough to let a grown man share the bed with their 12 year old daughter four nights a week for six months because "his doctor said so".

I don't believe the parents story for one second. What parent doesn't ring the police for days and days when their child goes missing? They probably allowed him to abuse her because they fell for his charms. It was just to bizarre. No parent is that dumb.

I think you have to remember this was in the 70s. No internet. No social media and a lack of awareness. Some people didn't even know what a paedophile was back then. Together with this I think the family lived in a back water religious community that was very naive, and let's face it they came across as being not very bright (especially the mother, who obviously just craved attention).

Even if it was a different time then and people were less aware about this kind of thing, surely the parents would ring the police rather than wait for days, even just to report them missing in case they had been in an accident of some kind.

The more you think about it, you have more doubts about the parents. Something doesn't add up.

Something very off about it. I could buy the naivety excuse but the fact the mother still to this day seemed almost proud of the affair, even after knowing what went on, makes me think she was complicit. Part of me thinks the dad was a closet case with a similar motive to the mother as well.

Why would he just jack someone off because they said the man he relieved hated their wife and wanted sex?

I had loads of other questions too but then realized the answer to my questions was,

The Innocent Man on netflix is a good watch.
A documentary all about the John Grisham book. Two young women murdered in Ada, Oklahoma and 4 guys wrongly convicted of their murders.
