Oh that is so sad - England's greatest ever keeper. Every child's hero when I was younger. One of the all time icon's of world football. Very sad to hear this news.

My favourite ever England Keeper. He was superb. The Pele save was simply out of this world. A true legend of our country.

When your heroes like Gordon start to pass on it really brings your own mortality home and personal perspectives are sharpened

RIP. Mr Banks sir, thanks for the great memories [|)]

The maker of the most famous/replayed/greatest/outrageous/memorable save in the history of football.

Mexico 70 was when I fell in love with football.

You will be seeing a lot of this save later today. The greatest ever goalkeeping save. Pele couldn’t believe it

The description “best goalkeeper in the world” was no exaggeration. That save from Pele in 1970 was impossible - but he made it. Seemed a genuinely nice bloke too.

RIP to another Yorkshire born legend.

He claims his best ever save was from a Geoff Hurst penack against West Ham in League Cup semi that got Stoke to Wembley and their only ever trophy.

I still reckon the Pele header, but who are we to argue with England's greatest keeper.

How was he not knighted, when Trevor Brooking is?
Or Finney and Matthews for that matter.

First saw him play against the Boro in '65 when they beat us 3-0 at home in the FA Cup. Ian Gibson played for us that day and his brother Dave scored for them.

That was my first ever Boro game (an indication of the pain to come).

I am in Brazil now and they have just showed 'that' save on a football show here. He has left a lot of people with some great memories and images.

I watched Banks play on a number of occasions and a great keeper, a lovely man and a true gent.

You always fancied Banksy to save it if a forward manage to get one on one with him.

RIP Gordon and thanks for the memories.

brilliant save but its all round brilliant football. the pass from carlos alverto with outside of foot to jazinho is out of this world

wouldnt have lost to west germany if he hadnt been ill and missed the game in 1970.

We also wouldn't have lost to West Germany if Sir Alf hadn't took Bobby Charlton off with 'the game won' allowing Franz Beckenbaur to control the game.

Banksie always on my subbuteo team, and always will be-- too bad that we never got to see him play when Jack's lads got promoted-- I think he'd already gone by then? I [somewhat] remember watching Saint and Greavsie giving the bad news that he'd retired after the car accident (1972ish). I honestly couldn't wait to see him at Ayresome Park-- too bad. He'll never be equalled IMO.
