Old people and driving

Father in law is 87 year old who sadly is rapidly losing his faculties. His short term memory and confusion are concerning. He has not been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimerís, yet though I suspect as a non medical person it could be the former. We keep telling him to discuss his issues with GP to see if there is any available medication.

The problem is, given his acute memory loss, is his ability to drive safely. In saying that, if he loses his car he probably loses the last bit of independence and purpose in life, and a rapid decline in his condition will ensue.

Any one share similar experiences and what did you do?

Yes. Carried on till 97. Eventually optician stopped him driving. Not because he couldn't see but because the optician's instructions confused him.

He's carrying on with a mobility scooter but that isn't an option for everyone and still has safety issues.

Old people and driving

It is tough, but the last thing anyone wants is an accident or worse to happen before a decision is made. People become incredibly selfish, I understand why and with good intentions, but I think the family should sit down and have a long word with your relative about things and options that might yet still retain some independence with family support.

Growing old sucks. Before any youngsters start crowing, if you are lucky, you will live a good age and one day be in that position. There is no one size fits all. If all else fails and you fear they are a danger to themselves and others, the family need to do the right thing and maybe alert the GP in the first instance
