I want a living room ceiling skimmed and 2 small lobby ceilings done.

Living room about 22 ft x 12 ft shallow swirl artex and the lobbies both around 6ft x6ft popcorn artex.
Any idea how much it should cost me ?

I've just paid 400 for a large living room full skim walls and ceiling. Plus a big double sliding door aperture boxed in and a single door frame boxed in. Took 2 guys 2 days (100 each per day) plus 130 on top for materials. Total 530.

Might take a couple of visits that, as the Plasterer will probably put PVA and bonding on first to take out the artex. Don't think they can (or should) put skim on that thick, as skim is only meant to be about 2mm. That's what my guy always does anyway.

So he will probably do the bonding one day and come back a few days later to skim it and might do a couple of coats.

I would say do the bonding yourself, just slightly cover the artex, then get a plasterer to skim it. But ceilings are a messy job for an amateur, and the plasterer might whinge at your $hitty bonding job [:D] Best off getting a pro in. Should only take one lad up to two days for the lot.

What I would say though is, if you like how your walls are decorated/ or you don't want to decorate again then protect them as best you can yourself, you can get tape which won't take off your wallpaper or wreck your existing paint.

Even the tidiest plasterer in the world will still get all over the edges of your walls and they won't tape up as well as you would.

Just to add to my earlier post, the guys who did mine are called Peter and Nicky Burton. Father and son business. Did a cracking job. We are having them back for more ceilings which they reckon they can do 2 bedrooms ceilings in one day. 200.

You get what you pay for. Don't go cheap otherwise it'll look like a four year old has done it.

Out of interest, does anyone know what the cost of materials should be to skim a ceiling over artex? I've looked online and a 25kg bag of plaster is about 7 which should cover 10sqM. I have 2 ceilings, one about 6ft x 8ft and the other about 12ft x 12ft. Ive been quoted 30 for materials.

I should add skimming involves two coats of finish plaster, if the artex is a heavy pattern then it may need bonding first followed by two coats of finish, plenty of cowboys out there who will one coat skim even over artex
