Got a lot of time for him, busts a gut every time he plays, never stops and loves a battle with a centre half.

The lad cares.

Up there with his best performances yesterday.

Any team that has him upfront on his own though... depressing.

He puts the shift in, but he needs to start scoring some goals. Also, i'm not convinced he can play up top on his own either.

Thought we struggled after he went off (as much as wing and Saville).

We had no out ball. I don't think you know how much we miss him until he's not playing.

I just think it was madness playing him and Wing against Newport.

Wing made him look better than he is.

For a Centre Forward he is far too wasteful in front of goal, I don't even find his penalties convincing at some point a keeper is going to stand up and his "down the middle" strategy is going to backfire.

He is a workhorse, nothing more. Can’t fault his effort but his ability is somewhat lacking to be a top striker at this level. The trouble is Britt can’t play the lone role as well.

I agree with Muttley about his penalties, they lack originality and the next keeper will stand up if they have any clue will risk it.

I agree but there's not many top strikers at this level though.

He's a championship player certainly. Billy Sharp is the best at the moment but very few if any PL clubs would go for him.

Really hoped Assombolonga might have 'bust a gut' and harried the Leeds back line for the 15 minutes he was on. We needed someone to take the pressure off.

I don't even know why I thought this given the style of player that he is.

Would love us to find another striker - even a relatively unknown young 'un. Someone with speed and energy to burn. Callum Wilson is one of the best I've seen at this level over the past few years. He was picked up by Bournemouth for a few million. Just hope we are scanning the lower leagues for talent coming through.

The problem with playing him and Britt together is that when we have started them together, I think it’s always been when we’ve played 5-3-2. At West Brom away in the second half it was 4-4-2 and worked much better.

Although he didn't score Bamford looked more of a threat than Hugill. Ayala did a great job in containing him for most but he still had a few chances. His movement and threat puts our forwards to shame. Well done Pulis good get rid of Bamford and bring in Hugill[cr][xx(][cr]

I did not notice Bamford apart from missing great chances.

I can see why clubs soon clear him out

Hugill couldn't even get to the great chance second half with his usual diving, sliding miss at the far post. Hugill has 3 goals and 2 assists from open play in 17 starts and 7 sub appearances. Bamford has 2 goals from open play and 1 assist with 1 start and 7 sub appearances.

Hugill not good, quick or alert enough to get in position to miss anything yesterday. He is just very poor.

None of our strikers can play the lone striker role. Can't fault Hugill for his effort but he isn't mobile enough and isn't going to score us enough goals playing on his own. Need another striker alongside him who can play off him.

I'd love for us to try a diamond formation, with Hugill and Britt up front, but can't see it happening.

At home I'd like to see.....

--------------------Randolph-------------------

Shotton------Ayala--------Fry---------Friend

----------------------Mikel-------------------

---Howson--------------------------Saville--

----------------------Wing----------------

------------Hugill--------Assombalonga-------

Or maybe this......

--------------------Randolph-------------------

Shotton------Ayala--------Fry---------Friend

-------------Mikel------Saville--------------

---VLP-----------Wing---------------Tav--

---------------------Hugill----------------

We seem incapable of keeping a clean sheet now, so need to both carry more attacking threat and more importantly, finish the chances we create. Flint has missed at least ten glorious opportunities to score this season, it's simply not good enough. We need to start being more ruthless, otherwise we'l finish 8th-6th and lose in the playoffs (again).

Same here PramRamp[^]

I have a feeling if we go back to four at the back Flint will be taken out of the side. Pulis did seem really disappointed with him for missing those chances, going off what he said in his post-match interview.

One thing that stood out to me yesterday was the best chances we created fell to flint (2), shotton and friend. Why? Why are our defenders getting into better positions than the striker?

PramRamp Posted on 11/02/2019 09:48

Maybe simply weight of numbers? There are 5 defenders and only one striker normally. So in a set piece situation if the ball goes loose in the box, it's much more likely to land near a defender than a striker?

Maybe [?]

He does a great job as an outlet for us and leads the line as well as any striker we have at the club but is not the sort who's going to get you twenty goals a season, unfortunately. Watching him, though, he must be an absolute nightmare to play against.

"Watching him, though, he must be an absolute nightmare to play against"

I know what you're saying, he gives the defender a battle. But I suspect if you asked a centre half to describe a "nightmare" they'd mention pace, power and trickery. Most champo defenders are well drilled in scrapping away, and come unstuck when faced with a bit of class.

Who said anything about set piece situations? Only one of our chances came from a set piece, the rest were from open play and all went to defenders.
