The 0-2 defeat at Newcastle the year we were relegated from the Premiership or the cup quarter final defeat at Birmingham City (or indeed, Stuart Boam just whacking the ball upfield against Derby County instead of passing it across his own defence).

Assuming the rest of the season went the same way, the infamous Blackburn game. Have it played, even with kids.

If not, the 1997 FA Cup final.

Don't even want to dream about an alternate timeline where we stayed in the Premier League in 1997.

I'd take that over the UEFA Cup, honestly, because those were special times and with our ambition at the time, the sky really was the limit.

Won't say the Uefa final, as we were punching a bit just to even be there.

Just wish we had fielded a team full of kids and fans against Blackburn away in 96-97, even getting beat 20-0 would have been fine in hindsight.

Cardiff 2008

Burton 2018

West Ham 2006 (ended up losing after dominating the game)

The Villa home tie in the pay off last season

The winner for me is the 1997 FA Cup final, to this day everytime the 42 second goal comes on the telly I close my eyes, I never watched the highlights and cannot even remember who got the 2nd for Chelsea. All the Wembley goaless defeats to Chelsea hurt.

On a point of pedantry does the unfulfilled Blackburn fixture actually count as a result?

Would we have stayed up if we'd beaten Leeds on the last day? (can't remember the permutations now). If so, then possibly that one.

That said, FA cup finals don't come round often for a club like us. I'd probably go for that or the UEFA cup.

FA cup more prestigious, but European champions even of the secondary competition would have been something and would have topped off an incredible cup run.

We'd also have got to play in the supercup, that would been another amazing day out.

Seeing my club walk on to the pitch in a major European cup final.. I had to pinch myself to believe it.

The other problem with the Blackburn game is that had it not happened in the way it did it may not have galvanised the club and the results that followed might not have been the same. As I recall festa, a win on the last day would have kept us up.

Probably better to change the Leeds result then, would be good to still have the Blackburn debacle with the sense of injustice.

But I still think I'd sooner we won the FA Cup that season as we bounced straight back up anyway.

As said above, had we have stayed up, we were bringinging in some top players according to Robson, the likes of Ince, Batistuta, Roberto Carlos, Nadal, were all apparently in the pipeline. The only slight doubt was Carlos

Imagine that lot with Juninho, Ravanelli and Emerson [8D] so as Adi implies, we were on the brink of potential greatness and blew it [cr]

The main 3 are:

Leeds v Boro 1997 - the signings we were due to make if we stayed up[cr]

Sevilla v Boro - UEFA Cup. First European Cup Final appearance...and it could be our only ever European Cup Final.

Chelsea v Boro - FA Cup Final. Would've loved to have seen us lift the oldest cup in the world.

I can't pick between the 3. All 3 would've been so special for different reasons.

Broadly agree with most of the above, however I'd like to nominate the 3-0 thrashing of Leicester at their place about three weeks before the final in 97.

O'Neill doesn't see what a threat Juninho is and doesn't man mark him with Kamark in the final. We stroll to a win.

Because the games aren't stacking up, we beat Chesterfield at first time of asking. Stay up comfortably bouyed by the Cup win, and tell the FA to stick their three points.

We lose the FA Cup Final in a tremendous game, but it doesn't matter because we become perennial challengers with the work done in the 97-98 off season.

Incidentally, Sky showed "The Football Years 96-97" this very morning. It concentrates on most of the European league and cup winners, and I'm fairly convinced that I had never seen Claridge's winning goal since the actual game.

the quarter final games against Orient,Wolves,Birmingham and Cardiff(especailly) will wrangle with me forever more but there were still two more hurdles same with the arsenal semi final at old trafford where we were excellent and unfortunate imo and like so the west ham semi but yet again another hurdle to negotiate.
tough call for me between the 1997 cup final and the uefa but for the sheer legendary status of it it has to be the UEFA and it would go down as the greatest series of consequetive games to win a trophy for a lesser top flight team right there alongside Liecester winning the league .stuff movies are made of.
The leeds game did need some mentioning but the fact that we were in that predicament even bearing in mind the Blackburn controversy surely shows that we under achieved during that season given the array of talent .

I won't say the Leeds game, as all it would have meant was staying up. We might not have signed all the names touted, or if we had, there might have still been dressing room disharmony between the foreign superstars and the British players, or even the new foreign superstars and the old foreign superstars (Rav and Emerson were toxic whichever way you look at it).

And even then, who knows whether it would have delivered anything tangible. Though it would have been great to see, we very well might not have gone on to win the Premier League and, who knows, might not have even gone on to win the Carling Cup? It might have been a failed, trophyless project in the end. Too many ifs and buts to say it would have been a big success.

No, for me it would be the UEFA Cup final. A second major trophy in the bag, another season in Europe, that would have been truly remarkable for our club. At that point, Liverpool were the only other English club to win the trophy in recent memory, and it could have propelled us towards a more realistic, sustainable level of greatness than Robson's mythical Galacticos.

I think fa cup and uefa in tge cup cabinet would have been obvious trophies to be proud of but the excitement of stopping up in 97 would have been an interesting ride. We had 10k waiting lists at the time on top of season ticket sell outs. Im sure the club would have built a second tier and we could have become what chelsea became..but i doubt it would have lasted as the billionare chairmen arrived and we know gibbo wont sell. We would have drifted away as we have done now.

FA Cup Final. It was a chance to put a marker down in our clubs history. I was at the UEFA Final and I can understand why people would vote for that - it was a one-off for a club our size. Yes, it would have been great but we would have lived the rest of our supporting lives without repeating it. The FA Cup however would still be a difficult but repeatable feat and we'd have finally broken the endless Wembley curse.

The one that hits me hardest, however is the third entry on my list. To win at the old Wembley was the dream, and we were so, so close [^]

I've missed the FA Cup Final off the list, as I've only included cases where I think on another day we could have got another result. We didn't get close to beating Chelsea that day, whereas if it wasn't for a disallowed penalty vs Sevilla we'd have been right back in the game and on the front foot. Leeds away.. that Juninho chance :-( .. and we were seconds away versus Leicester (which is why I'm still not over it!).

Yes, I'd not go as far to say that we've been spoiled but there's nothing like a carthouse on the pitch to disgruntle a Boro crowd.

Too fluffy for me that hypothesis to be a deciding factor in choosing the result of all history to amend.

I can't see beyond the UEFA Cup Final for the result I'd want to change. A one off likely never to be repeated game (given the route to the final compared to say the FA Cup) with no hypothetical scenarios riding on it in the future and a major european trophy in the cabinet. No brainer for me.

For us it would have been an amazing achievement but it's not exactly prestigious to the top teams.

Man United fans were constantly getting told they'd won a Mickey Mouse cup a couple of seasons ago when they won it.
The fans and manager were so focused on it mainly as it provided an alternate route to the Champions League, rather than because they wanted the silverware.

Quite a few of the suggested games our results hinged on a crucial decision that was wrong.

Heskey was offside for the equaliser in the League cup final - not spotted

Festa equalised just before halftime in the FA Cup final but was given offside incorrectly

UEFA final we had 2 or 3 great chances just after halftime at 1 down and a ludicrous denied penalty - had we got back level we were all over Seville and IMO we would have gone on to beat them.

In that final week of 4 games we were denied a pen at Blackburn near the end of the rearranged game - could have won 1-0 - and then stayed up.

Given the players who departed after the 2 cup final defeats and relegation which of those would have stayed had we stayed up or been in Europe the following season even if in the lower tier?

Shocking performances at Brum, Orient , home to Cardiff all when we were capable of reaching FA Cup finals taking into accountthe rest fo the teams left in. (Brum lost to 2nd tier Fulham in the semi for example) Replace any of those with a halfdecent performance and history rewritten?

Gibson spending money back then meant we could buy most players and Robson had the pull to get them. Had we stayed up we could have had a very special team for a good 4-5 years before our bubble would have burst.

Keeping Juninho in his prime would have been good enough for me tho, he was never the same after the Salgado (assault) injury. Had we stayed up he would have stayed and we would built a team around him.[LOVE]

on a side note had we stayed up in 97 we wouldn't have signed Roberto Carlos.

We were interested in signing him the year before when at Inter but he went to Real Madrid in the summer of 96.

1) the leeds game just to answer the what ifs.
2) Euro final doesnt look like we will ever get back to those heights.
3) The FA cup final, would be nice to have an fa cup win in the memory bank.
4) the leiscter league cup final (the 1st one) . That equaliser hurt like a mother_fckuer (i was that age where bad moments can scar, and the sick to the stomach feeling, the gutted faces around me and the change in noise is still easily remembered)

League Cup Final v Leicester is the one that always springs to mind for me too. Win that and avoid the draining replay, we don't have to play 3 games in the last week and probably stay up comfortably, 3 points or not. Win that and the feel good factor also probably helps us to cruise through v Chesterfield the week after!

Wolves QF in 81. Had we won that the great team that John Neal was developing wouldn't have started to break up and who knows where that could have taken us

Easy: "The glory that awaited us if we stayed up would've been better than any cup final."

That is quite a statement and one I'm not sure I agree with. We had players like Rav, Juninho, Emerson and still went down that season. Its a season viewed with misty eyes by many but not by myself - we were relegated. I don't think Robson would have been able to mould a team of big name players who would have rocked up at Boro essentially just for the money.

Derek, yes agree 100% & TBH if I hadnít chosen Brum then Derby would have been my next call
Beating them, IMHO, we would have won the 1st division

My initial reaction to this thread was the same as many with regards to the Leeds game in '97. The what ifs etc...
I don't think we were ever going to be challenging for the title in '98, but yes, would've been exciting to see what sort of team we could've had.

So hypothetically, we could've had a side capable of qualifying for Europe, due to league position. That enables us to get into Uefa cup.

We got to a Uefa cup final! Changing the result to a win would therefore be my choice.

Definitely the UEFA Cup Final. Winning it after such an amazing run would have been huge.

Perhaps Gibson would have brought it a proper manager once McClaren moved on too.

I would say the League Cup final vs Leicester. Win that and I believe confidence would of been high and we would of stayed up.

Also the loss to Cardiff in the FA Cup semi was a killer. The was probably one of the best chances we had to win it.

96/97 final game against Leeds - bigger than the UEFA Cup final, bigger than the FA & League cup finals..

we win & stay up. Juno, Rav, Emerson, Festa, stay.. & we add some more quality.. & push on..

That was our chance to really progress.. we still did well, though that was a chance missed..

UEFA cup all day long. To win that would have been very very special.

Followed by FA cup. Take trophies not quarters, semis or even premier league. Trophies are what marks a club in history and we are very poor in that respect.

"We'd also have got to play in the supercup, that would been another amazing day out."

This is why I'd choose the UEFA above all. The glory of winning it and having another year in Europe in 06/07 is a big reason anyway, but our Super Cup opponents would have been none other than Barca that year?

And THAT would have been a game talked about for decades.

Europa league final hands down for me. Beating a top class Sevilla team in the final to set up a game against peak Barcelona and another season playing in Europe.
As someone who was ever so slightly too young to enjoy the 96/97 season the Europe years were the best years Iíve had watching Boro.

Cardiff Home 2008

If weíd have won we would have had:
- A Wembley game v Barnsley and the chance to see actually win at Wembley
- A night in Trafalgar Sq

If we won that then:
An FA Cup Final v Pompey, the chance of winning the oldest cup competition, 2 more nights in Trafalgar Sq (before and after).

What a time it would have been.
