I found it rather uncomfortable watching. Very sad.

Possibly Britain’s greatest ever sportsman. I’d say so anyway.

Great pro and all round decent bloke.

We all knew it was coming though. It must be so hard knowing he will never achieve the heady heights he once did playing the game. He has his trophies, his memories, his wealth and his family to help him through it.

As BJK said though, his greatest impact may be yet to come, who knows.

I recall watching him at the Olympic Final in Rio when he played against Del Potro in the Final and 95% of the crowd. 5 set crueler but Murray found hidden reserves to win that match.

A winner

Legend of British sport, not just British tennis.

To be very competitive in and era containing probably the 3 best players to ever play the sport is testament.

Double Wimbledon Champion
Double Olympic Champion
Almost single handedly won GB the Davis Cup
A number of other Grand Slam Finals

All in an era the like of which Mens Tennis has never seen before. 3 other great players vying for titles.

If not the greatest British Sportsman certainly one of them and to say that is nonsense DCI Gene is just ignorant of fact.

That comment is ridiculous.

He's not even the greatest British player in his sport....so to even suggest he's the greatest British sportsman ever is laughable.

You have the likes of Ian Botham in cricket, Steve Redgrave in rowing, Phil Taylor in darts, Bobby Charlton in football, Chris Hoy in cycling, Alex Ferguson in football, Bobby Moore in football, Lennox Lewis in boxing.....and you're saying Murray is the greatest British sportsman ever?

Yes....Gene is correct. Your comment was 'nonsense'.

No his comment wasn't nonsense. How do you compare sportsmen across disciplines? Its only opinion - so his is as good as yours Marvanelli.

Also - behaviour off the "field of play" has some part to play. In that respect another tick in his box. His championing of equality is pertinent.

To Win Wimbledon takes a bit of doing and he was world number 1 and won an Olympic thing, so I think to be one of the best ever British Sportsmen isnt to far off the mark.

I dont even like Tennis.

I ain't doubting what he's achieved in the sport.

He's won 3 slams in an era that was arguably the greatest of all time.

However, saying that, Perry won 10 majors (8 slams and 2 pro slams)....Murray has come nowhere near eclipsing that.

He's a great for British in Tennis.

Not the greatest British sportsman of all time for me though....he doesn't even come close.

At least you are trying to justify the comment but by comparing stats negates your argument that Ian Botham is one of the greatest. Botham is not the highest run scorer or wicket taker in English cricket and yet you suggest he is one of the greatest sportsmen ever?

You may be right and that's your opinion. I am not saying it is "nonsense". It is how you win those titles or get those wickets and what opposition you faced.

Marv, we're talking British, not worldwide.

Of course he's the greatest British tennis player in his field, name another British player that is greater?

Also, name more than two or three British sportsmen who have been more successful than him in the modern era.

Lewis Hamilton and Justin Rose have had super careers, but there aren't many more Brits I can think of.

Murray is definitely in the debate for being the greatest British sportsman ever.

Some of the names you've mentioned are just as questionable as suggesting Andy Murray!

I assume Fergie is included for his managerial achievements. Not really achieved that as a sportsman though has he?

Very difficult to compare team sports to individual sports.

Phil Taylor? There's only a handful of countries in the world who take darts seriously, so difficult to compare with a global sport like tennis.

You can make a case for any of them and there are so many factors to take into account any fair comparison is pretty much impossible.

But I don't see why Murray is any more ridiculous a shout than anyone else. His achievements are certainly up there.

Name another British player that is greater in his field? Easy....Fred Perry. By a country mile.

Phil Taylor - Darts
Lewis Hamilton - Motor Racing
Lennox Lewis - Boxing
Just Rose/Rory McIlroy - Golf
Ronnie O'Sullivan/Stephen Hendry - Snooker
Chris Hoy/Chris Froome - Cycling

I could list more.

Makes me laugh when posters dismiss peoples opinions as "nonsense" then go on to spout "nonsense" themselves. Or indeed in Gene's case not at all.

Phil Taylor - Darts. ( pub game)
Lewis Hamilton - Motor Racing. ( car is important)
Lennox Lewis - Boxing. ( weak opposition)
Just Rose/Rory McIlroy - Golf. (possibly)
Ronnie O'Sullivan/Stephen Hendry - Snooker. ( limited countries play the sport)
Chris Hoy/Chris Froome - Cyclingnn. ( possibly)

He is GB's greatest ever tennis player. To get to the top and stay at the top of a supremely physical sport like tennis takes more guts, dedication and ability than most people could even imagine.

Still won't be sorry to see the back of him though.
