With the right support from the government, both financial and legislative, it could be an interesting 5-10 years for Teesside. Houchen is making the right noises and banging the drum but it needs our local councils to put aside political bias and pull together to make it happen. I fear the quality of our council representatives will let us down

Houchen is making noises and banging the drum alright but this all he is doing. Our local councils are rightfully operating due diligence on everything he proposes yet he had the website up from day one telling people to pillory labour councillors to 'back bens deal' - how can they back what they haven't seen yet as they didnt have the plan at the time? but they should be told to back it anyway?

All a load of guff. Teesside Airport and Houchen is basically the Monorail for Springfield.

Look at the bitterness and jealisy oozing from every pore of Corcaigh the Cat every time Ben Houchen's name is mentioned. He's so desperate for him to fail, even if it means the people of Teesside suffer.

What a sad, snivelling socialist you are.

I'm a socialist. Very happy to admit I was wrong about Ben

People I know who work with are impressed with his drive and passion for Teesside

Hoping he can save the airport, do worry ,as already mentioned, that the local Labour councils will feck it up

Yes, White Trainers, I too know people who are dealing directly with Ben both at the airport and at the steelwork site and both say heís very passionate about Teesside and works tirelessly at getting the best new developments for the area. If even some of the things Iíve been told are in pipeline actually happen then we are in for a brighter future

I'm not by any means a Tory but it seems to me that the man at least has some vision for the Tees Valley unlike many of the councillors.
Where was the due diligence from the councils when the airport was virtually given away.

Letís wait for some boots on the ground before jerking him off should we. This is only one announcement from many yet I canít say weíve actually seen anything come from them.

Interestingly mind, Houchens pal Andy Preston is now praising the office development in the town centre after a lot of nay saying negative comments. Little mention of the advanced manufacture park. No talk of the councils house building proposals.

Sound bite machine.

I'd love to know where people think the money going to come from for this boom on Teesside?

The Country is in crisis and it will only get worse after Brexit. The government don't and never have given a fuch about Teesside. Doesn't matter how loud Ben shouts, nothing will change. File along side Northern Power house.

Slashing in the wind springs to mind.

I'll be 50 next year and I have heard this line about the regeneration of the area all my life.

It's just rhetoric. Nothing will change, especially as we are about to enter a period of uncertainty / probable national recession.

'Where was the due diligence from the councils when the airport was virtually given away.'

The airport was never virtually given away. The airport was long in decline and in need of approximately £12m in upgrades and investments, which was cash that the councils and the airport just did not have.

Peel took over the airport for £500k, which is what everyone focuses on, but also with an agreement to spend £20m on upgrading the site, refurbishment and infrastructure. Given the losses that the airport has been running at, if you think they are getting value for money after running it since 2002, the new access road, terminal fronts, rebrand costs, and everything else they did as part of a planned £56m improvement package (which was never completed due to global recession and falling passenger numbers), then you're living in a fantasy land. They're quoted as having spent £40m on it, £60m if you include capital.

They run two successful airports already in Sheffield Doncaster & Liverpool John Lennon, Liverpool John Lennon is as big as Newcastle Airport in terms of passenger numbers with about 5m a year, so 5 times more than teesside has ever managed at its absolute peek - which was achieved under Peel prior to the decline.

Remember Peel took over the airport in 2002 & during that year passenger numbers fell for the 3rd year running. Peel then recorded 4 straight years of increases, two of which were double digit growth, before the global recession hit in 2007 which is when they started to drop heavily.

I am sure if the councils could afford to pump money into the airport they would never have sold it, but given how much money its lost over that time it was never going to be viable for them. We have two big, successful airports in our region in Newcastle and Leeds Bradford, both are easy to get to and offer a lot more flights and destinations that Teesside will ever be able to handle, which is why passenger numbers decline because in our financial environment today, a family taking people away are willing to travel an hour or two if it will save them a few hundred quid. We fly out from Newcastle and Leeds several times a year and its no time at all to get to them, they have great facilities. Will cost a bomb to get Teeside anywhere near them.

But yeah back ben's plan, for which his site told you to hammer your local councillor to back it before you even heard any of the details about it - just back it anyway!

Area has been regenerating as long as I can remember and yet everyone will go tick the red box every chance they get...labour councils have done feck all for this area apart from rip tax payers off and destroy communities...

Add to that the underhand selling off of public owned assets for next to nothing and being as far from transparent as you can get. It is a joke they are still anywhere near positions of power.

Have you seen the new logo and tagline [DFS]

We should get rid all politicians. They don't do much anyway. I'm seek of seeing them trying take credit for other people hard. There first people that try to distance themselves from something when things start to goes wrong.

The perfect example of this was Ben Houchen the Tees Valley Mayor with Middlesbrough train station.

competitive edge will be born out of low rates of pay, possibly enabled by the absence of EU employment law. Top 10% might thrive but the rest of you will not IMO, not on zero hours contracts.

I remember in the late 90s reading about how fantastic Middlehaven was going to be. The Riverside was going to be the start then others would follow. Middlesbrough quays would become world famous. Casinos, theatres, restaurants.

25 years later we end up with one office block, a ghost Sainsburyís, the monstrosity that is Middlesbrough college and a giant Femidom.

We are balls at regeneration.

If the steelworks can be cleaned up and we get a decent airport then the area might finallyake some progress.

Cleaning up the steel works site is going to cost an absolute fortune - that £14m that was reported On recently might cover some of the consultation costs if we are lucky.

The airport will cost that £40m to actually buy. It wonít cover money for losses, and the massive improvement program that will be needed. Not seen any mention of how thatís going to be funded yet, Iíve just been told to back bens plan repeatedly despite not seeing bens plan [LOVE]
