We need a mobile friendly site or app for this board. Why dont we set up a go fund me page and get it sorted. Im sure we could rustle up enough for Rob to get one sorted between us.

It is absolutely paramount now, I'd say Rob, if you want the site to survive long-term.

Otherwise, not a bad suggestion Joe.

fmttm crowdfund a mobile app/site?

You dont need to crowd fund or pay for a mobile app. you can do all this for free. I built one the other day as an example to Rob after he said he was engaging a company to do it (which seems to have been the line for about the last 3 years)

you can have a forum set up in 15 minutes that will work great on mobile.

I posted this in the suggestions thread - i put it together while working on a few other things, it would take no time at all to customise, and I dont think loss of old threads would be an issue because the only way to find things now is by googling them, so would be the same situation as it is now.

About 5 minutes to install, 10 minutes to customise, then post some sample content.

Polls, embedded content, subforums, there are add-ons to run adwords/custom banner ads if you want them etc...all the modern features like private messaging, searches, user titles, moderators, ignore list, poster banning, hell banning (user doesn't know they are banned and continues to post but no one sees their posts), customisable themes, stats, sticky posts by forum, movable posts, customisable word filter, subscriptions,...the lot. thousands of add-ons which are one-click installs. you can even have a user group where people can pay to subscribe so these can be your auto FMTTM subs, and you can give these users additional benefits, such as not seeing banner ads for example.

load it on your mobile and you will see it works perfectly.

Have a look around each of the forums / sample content and you can see images and videos embed with ease, gifs can be turned off, and you can set the same smilies up as you have on here if you want rather than having the epilepsy ones of CoB.

you can run polls, you can send all members emails, you can add a news banner, you can get a report of users that have used the same IP addresses, pretty much anything you would want to do you can do.

It's all easily customised with logos, and you can build in CMS content if you want such as wordpress or even just static pages if you wanted content like what is on the left hand side (even though its mostly well out of date as it is)

everyone says this place is fine and doesn't need to be as awful as come on boro, but you can have an up to date forum without having animated gifs everywhere; attachments, PM system, search, who's online, thread stats, sorting etc all ultra basic functionality.

Most importantly you can ignore people.

Yes Fair, pinch-zooming is just an intolerable ballache on the site.

TBF zooming at all really is a ballache in itself and shouldn't really be necessary.

atypical, click the link above on your mobile and see how it works instantly and resizes correctly for mobile (and indeed any size device).

Responsive websites should be the easiest thing in the world to do in this day and age. No need to spend money on mobile apps or employ teams to do revamps. All available off the shelf and free and fully customisable.

fmttm crowdfund a mobile app/site?

I think the most common argument against it is that it will look like CoB where every smiley is an animated gif and everyone posts loads of animated rubbish. The site can be designed to look as closely to this one as possible (if you wanted to maintain the geo cities message board look for some reason) but a lot of added functionality is possible.

Off the top of my head;

* Premium user content/Paid user content - this could be for FMTTM subscribers, or to have users that want to pay to not see ads or just contribute to the site

* Full instant messaging solution to privately PM a user - threaded conversation and can share contact details securely.

* Threaded conversations which allow quotes and direct replies. Notifications can be turned on when you have been quoted and you can subscribe to a thread for when there have been new posts

* Sticky threads based on the forum you are in. Announcements which can be forum white, subform only or upon login, if theres key information to impart

* Add users to friend list, see when they were last online, ignore them if they are annoying. Report their posts if they break the rules.

* Search function that actually works to find your posts, all posts by a user, all topics about a post etc

* Embedded video so YouTube vids can play at the click of a button. Soundcloud clips the same etc

* Links that dont mean you have to manually delete the s from https before you post

* Banner ad integration so sponsors can do adverts easily, and integration with adsense/adwords.

* tools to detect people using multiple usernames (cookies, IP)

* customisable word filter

* Integrated polls

* fully mobile responsive for all devices

* Maintenance mode that will warn of impending down time with a countdown

* attachments

literally thousands of add-ons that customise the functionality of the site.

Even if you are happy with the way the site is now, why anyone wouldn't want the above I can't even begin to fathom as they would improve this place immeasurably.

RTG sunderland forum may be full of some horrible people (and some decent ones too), but its absolutely a great model as to how to run a well built football forum with good user features that makes people actually want to use it instead of frustrating them. ComeOnBoro isn't really a viable alternative because its full of cretins and over the top gifs, but anyone serious about setting up a decent boro site could do so with ease and as long as it was well moderated, would probably attract a lot of users.

CoB - terrible users, great site. FMTTM the opposite - great users but the site is god awful. The information to the left hand side is so out of date its unreal - the fact one of the links says '20 years of fly me' says it all when it was the 30th not so long ago.

Boro Futsol? Basketball? Teesside urnban legends? player ratings from 2014, prediction league last game was yeovil vs middlesbrough from 2014, and squad profiles has steele in goal and danny graham as our striker.

Why no lists of televised games? Upcoming fixtures? Championship table? these could all be automated feeds easily enough. Loads of great info on here but a lot of it is absolutely dead weight.

I don't have to many issues on my mobile with this site. I use Brave browser. I don't have the pinch zoom problem. Also, I double tap and the thread text fills the screen width.

It looks better time than the proposal above.

Can you describe how?

As I said that was literally minutes of work to install a random red theme. If people wanted it to look like it was built in the 90s it could be made to look exactly like this site, although I would imagine that would be the minority of internet users.

Design aside, struggle to see how the functionality of this site could be better than the above though.

Nice that you don't have that problem, but people should not have to use a different browser for a single website - thats is not really an effective solution.

'Rob used that same response about four years ago.'

Well the 'board problems and issues post' starts out by saying 'while we wait for the new board to be delivered' and one of the first replies is talking about the pinch/zoom issues so I am really not expecting any actual progress. I just put the above site together to show that all this talk of IT experts, teams of designers, consultants etc all looking at the site that seems to be the token response aren't needed and that someone can put together a site that does everything people have been asking for on here for the last several years inside of a couple of minutes.

I've done checks on old site and Firefox and Puffin are poor but Brave Chrome and Dolphin work well with no pinch issues.

The concept site works with all but Firefox, which only works in landscape. All the others need to be turned to landscape to read but Brave and Chrome double tap to work in portrait.

Full marks for modernity though.

What's wrong with this site? I like only being able to see half the screen on my mobile because of a giant advert. And being forced to use landscape mode to make it readable. I also like how each post has 3 options but 2 of them are just to display error messages. 1 link at a time, which doesn't work if you use https, is another great feature.

I've been on this site for about 15 years and there has been upgrades coming soon for that whole time. I'm not expecting anything radical any time soon.

Bear66, what do you mean by 'have to set it to landscape to read'? I've never had to set my mobile to landscape to read a forum. I've just installed firefox, brave and puffin and can do so on all 3 without rotating my phone so I am a bit confused as to why you are having to do so?

I do use an iPhone X, however I have a samsung galaxy s3 mini which has a fairly small screen and I've just fired it up on those browsers for that and while the text is small, I dont have to switch it to landscape mode - however that would all be solved by a simple change to increase the font size in use.

In fact you could even give people the option to use a theme with a larger font for those with older devices, and maintain the option for a smaller font for those with newer devices.

Again though - great that you don't have that pinch zoom issue , as I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but many people do.

What Pi$$es me off about this site is trying to rite a post more than a couple of lines long, or going back to edit it.

Then there's the size of the text box which is minute. I know this can be resized, but why not at least start the size of the box as wide as the rest of the content/ adds on the page??

I've just noticed something with this site, the whole thing is operated from two or three Middlesbrough addresses (I thought the addresses changed on each forum, but they don't).

I had assumed the boro part was just a cog in the "fansonline" matrix, but we're actually pretty much the mainstay. It would look daft for fansoline to not have a boro page, so to update means updating all the fansonline forums too (not that any of them look busy).

Making the forum current would make everyone here's life easier, but it would also more than likely make the other forums busier too, which should increase ad revenue. Might have missed the boat on that one though, as most teams will already have modern established forums.

COB does not need to be the yardstick by which any feature is measured. Embedded pictures are possible on a variety of popular forums with none of the issues caused by them.

The issue with CoB content is the posters on CoB.

Indeed - my post from the other thread pasted below:

A lady from Google - did she ring you up?! Seems a bit far fetched to be honest - I work in the industry and I'd be surprised if someone who actually worked for Google was able to assist you in the slightest.

You're continuing to ignore the advice of experts who are TELLING you that continuing to try to develop this board software is an exercise in futility - there is only 1 sane option.

I am a member of countless online communities and I cannot think of any that rely on their own board software.

Furthermore the scepticism exhibited by myself and others is as a direct result of your lack of action over a period of many years and the fact that when you emailed me and I immediately replied with the truth you took over a week to reply back. I had to chase you twice for you to even have the good grace to confirm receipt of my email. I believe this was because the contents of my email was not what you wanted to hear.

This is tantamount to sticking your fingers in your ears while people who actually know what they're talking about who have no interest in making a single penny out of this site try to advise you - but carry on listening to those "experts" who are going to make money out of you by continuing the madness of custom written message board software in 2019!
