"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist,"

Bryan Singers classic noir thriller is well worth a watch if you have never seen it. It pretty much enjoys cult status. It is hard to believe it is 23 years old.

The plot follows the interrogation of a disabled survivor of a Californian dock massacre and arson attack, several Argentinian and Hungarian gangsters perish whilst still on board a smuggling vessel.

A US government agent (Chaz Palminteri) smells a rat and travels to the police station where the surviver, small time con operator (Kevin Spacey) is being held to conduct the cross examination. The film is presented to the viewer through Spacey's narration with that smug voice of his and a series of flashbacks in the six weeks that preceded the massacre. Palminteri's character tries to piece together the truth.

Christopher Walken and Robert DeNiro both turned down US, Al Pacino was pencilled in to play Agent Kugan but got dragged into another project, I dont think Singer could afford them anyway. Palminteri and Spacey are brilliant regardless. Other actors included Gabriel Byrne, Benito Del Toro Stephen Baldwin and our very own now deceased Pete Postlethwaite.

The story develops around the cripple and a gang of regular criminals (as seen in the legendary film poster) and the menacing mysterious, mythical invisible Turkish crime lord Keyser Sose who is controlling everything?
The film is famous for a haunting score, very sharp script and stand out performances by the smallish, relatively unknown at the time, cast. It is also famous for the amazing twist at the end, only Fight Club gets anywhere near the surprise element.

Probably one of the greatest movies of all time.

'King Frat' and 'Blazing Saddles' lead the way in the old trouser cough department on screen.

JJ Grossout was set to win the campus fart contest in King Frat but was disqualified for drawing mud. His ex girlfriend won after matching him pump for pump on the fartometer

It is a masterpiece, it never really got the credit at the time.

It was odd seeing Stephen Baldwin on Celebrity Big Brother a few years back and a bible bashing B movie actor. Nobody mentioned his portrayal of the psychotic McMXXXXXX in US.

You know that I was just pulling your puddings there EP, so give over. 'Usual Suspects' is a fairly good film but it's not as great as some like to claim. It has some capable character actors giving commendable performances but there's a big dollop of the whole 'Fight Club' style nineties faux profundity hanging over it in my opinion.

I'm 200GB in credit on that private tracker site that I mentioned before. If you could recommend any recent Korean or Japanese movies that I might want to watch it would be much appreciated.

US became such a classic because it was shot on a small budget, I actually heard that Singer had to go cap in hand to get extra funding for Palminteri who was the biggest 'name' at the time (Spacey and Del Toro have never looked back since US)

To this day I have never met anyone who wasn't surprised at the end, or can boast they had figured it out.

It's hardly the reveal of the century, is it? I do like the film but is way over-hyped by the same kind of people who think that 'Fight Club' and 'Requiem For a Dream' are masterpieces. (MAJOR SPOLIER ALERT FOR THE THREE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WHO HAVEN'T ALREADY SEEN IT) 'He just made it all all up' is only a small step away from the Dallas style 'it was just a dream' kind of resolution, surely? Bugger all groundbreaking about that. Been done to death.

It's not a bad film but it is hugely overrated in my own sweet opinion.

Any offers as far as the Japanese/ Korean films are concerned? Look out for 'Shoplifters' when it goes on general release. A cracking film. Saw it with my other half and oddly about two dozen pensioners at the Arc last week. Same director who made 'Nobody Knows', 'Still Walking' 'Like Father Like Son' etc. I had no idea that the over sixties were the most avid admirers of Asian cinema in Stockton. Bit of an eye opener that.

Bumface.

'Shoplifters' was reviewed by Mark Kermode yesterday, he said it was brilliant. He was also going orgasmic over the new Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz movie 'Disobedience'

I have not seen many Korean movies recently, last two were 'Train to Busan' and 'The Wailing'. I saw the movie 'Searching'at the cinema, set in the Korean community of California. Its about a widower who has to go snooping around his missing daughters on line activity after she goes missing.

One element of Korean movies I like (Old Boy, Memories of Murder, Mother etc) is you are often left wondering at the end.

Its a pity you only lasted 20 minutes Harbottle, the director dishes out about three huge clues in that time.

Apologies to you Piff. I didn't see 'Shoplifters' at the Arc at all. I unwittingly and half drunkenly had a bit of a senior moment and told you a naughty fib there by accident. It was in Newcastle that the blue rinse brigade were out in force and in fine fettle, not Stockton. I visit so many venues in the region that they eventually all start to bleed in to one another in my aged and well addled mind.

The good news for you though is that you can see that film at The Arc in January if you fancy it. You like to pretend to be a Mackem after all and we all remember what Gibson said about Stockton all of those years ago so you should feel right at home.

I'm a bit annoyed that Kermode agrees with me. Can only tolerate him with the sound off and the subtitles on most of the time and I'm normally in staunch opposition to his generally masturbatory, frankly tedious and rather establishment driven led conservative and vacuous opinions on film.

God help us if anyone actually makes a vital and essential and original new film that appeals to the working classes. How will people like him cope in their cosy little Hoxton lofts after watching something like that?

I kind of disagree about 'The Baba- whatever' to be honest. I quite liked it but that puts me on Kermode's side again and that troubles me more than it probably should. EP. You mentioned 'Suicide Club' not that long ago. A Sion Sono film that tons of people thought was a crap horror movie when it was never supposed to be a horror movie in the first place. It just borrowed those genre trappings to highlight the bonkers schizophrenic characteristics of modern Japan where the long held old pre war notions of collectivism still somehow impossibly coexist with those fresher imported Western ideas of Capitalism and the associated 'me, me, me' cult of the individual that goes along with that.

'The Bad, bad bollok' did a similar thing, I thought. It was a film about post-natal depression and grief. It was never meant to be a horror movie in the traditional sense.

I don’t mind piff actually when he is doing his film stuff. We all know he is copying and pasting opinion and passing it off as his own but it’s an interesting subject and at least he isn’t talking about trouser coughs.

When you think about, even his board persona has been lifted, a Boro fan pretending to be a Mackem pretending to be a Boro fan. I reckon he got a special edition of inception on dvd one Christmas and got a bit carried away after listening to the directors nites,

"Probably one of the greatest movies of all time"

TBH I've always been - hugely - underwhelmed by this film..

I saw it the first time, without any knowledge of the hype & rave reviews.. & thought it was 'B' movie material though a fun little watch, even if it did have a ridiculously OJ "the glove doesn't fit ending" ending (same year).. which I just thought was trite..

watched again & B movie classic is still my opinion..

Now, The Life of David Gale is a tough watch & a superb performance from Spacey.. if a little prophetic of his issues to surface..

Babadook was clever admittedly but the demon looked like the puppet from the Jonny Vegas tea adverts. It didn't do it for me.

LODG is a half decent watch with a strong cast. Kate Winslet generally picks a good script.

US isn't for everyone Bob. It has the best twist ending in modern times. 'Fight Club' and M.Nights 'The Village' are 2nd and 3rd behind it.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree here EP I think. The bloke is a one trick pony and a fraud who is robbing a living as far as I'm concerned. He's the Rudy Gestede of film makers but possibly even worse then that even. South Park had him bang to rights in that typically brutal take down of him that they did. Was 'Devil' the one in the lift? Seem to remember that being slightly more watchable than his usual tedious guff but not by much.

One trick directors aren't always necessarily bad though, as long as the trick is a good 'un. I'm a big fan of Sabu's stuff from Japan for example. Almost all of his films follow the same formula; straight laced and mild mannered salary man unwittingly one day gets involved with a load of common criminals or Yakuza but Sabu does them so well that it never seems to gets boring. 'Drive' is probably the best of the bunch but would also strongly recommend 'Monday', 'Unlucky Monkey' and 'Postman Blues' in that respect.

I think that I mentioned 'Betty Blue' to you on another thread before. Beatrice Dalle had a really hairy bush in that film and you'd probably enjoy the Spanish film by Bigas Luna called 'The tit and the moon' too. Plenty of trouser coughs in that one.

We've mentioned 'Bedevilled' before EP you daft sod. I told you who directed it and how that related to Kim Ki Duk's brilliant work if I remember rightly. You're not even trying here. If you're gonna set yourself up as some kind of film expert you really need to up your game. Seems like you've seen about six films from Korea and then really flounder when it comes to anything else as far as world cinema is concerned.

I'd recommend 'The Bacchus Lady' if I haven't already to you as far as Korean cinema goes. A real eye opener of a film starring the elderly actress who was so good in 'The Housemaid' that I think you mentioned. It's about largely widowed or divorced female pensioners selling their bodies to equally old blokes by hanging around in parks and offering them energy drinks. It's a real thing in Korea apparently because some women of that generation simply can't get by any other way. Utterly bizarre seeing OAPs hustling for trade like that but the world is f***ed so it shouldn't really be that surprising I suppose.

I will order 'The Bacchus Lady' on Amazon Bum. I love movies like that. One thing I will say is that comedy is not Korean cinemas strong point.

Another Korean movie I enjoyed was the horror about the soldiers on the NK/SK border.

Hope that you enjoy 'The Bacchus Lady' if you do watch it EP, but don't get your hopes up too much. It's three quarters of a great film but it does rather fizzle out at the end and leave you feeling a bit cheated. As if the director just couldn't be XXXXXXd to finish it properly or the money just ran out. Bit like 'Guilty of Romance' I suppose.

I haven't forgiven you for poo-pooing my contribution to your Christmas movies thread but I am still speaking to you. I am XXXXXX outraged though. Say that to my face and my face will fart right back in to yours and if you're really unlucky at my age I'll probably follow through too and it won't be pretty.

Not sure why you took offence to me recommending a film that features Santa as a well meaning drunk who lives in a sewer and rescues discarded toys and pets that were gifted and then tossed away by ungrateful kids the previous Christmas and somehow magically gives them 'life' and looks after them until the next festive season comes around when he wipes their memories and they get given away as presents again to probably await the same fate again forever. Xmassy as XXXXXX, that film is and it deserves to be on your bleeding list, you contrary git!

(Edit) Also probably the best film ever made about love between man and turtle and it has a signature tune that is utterly impossible to get out of your brain after you've watched it. It's a XXXXXX marvellous film in my opinion.

There are a load of 'Studio Ghibli' movies on in the middle of the night over these next few weeks on Film4 if you haven't already seen them, if that's included in you're current package (Oo-er, missus) Not usually an anime enthusiast but I love that stuff. Watched 'Howl's Moving Castle' again for the first time in years tonight and thought it was absolutely brilliant.

You could at least wish me merry Christmas. I did it several times with you regardless and I gave you what you wanted and let you 'win' too. How about a bit of gratitude and goodwill you unspeakable ******?

Seasons greetings to you!

There we go. Civility is half heartedly restored. I'd still love to know why you decided to leap on me like that though. I've only ever been bumface on here and only bothered starting to post fairly recently. I just generally used to use this place to catch up during all of the time that I was working away and couldn't see the games.

You can keep spamming that thing forever and I still won't know what it's supposed to mean so it's fairly pointless. I thought we were bestest friends now? Nought as strange as folk. . .

Typical, I make a thread about cinematic genius and you two try and dump on it.

Don't blame me fella'. I'll come clean here though. I am actually you. I'm Ticker_tape too, and Spartacus and even Santa Claus and the baby Jesus as well. You're all about to celebrate my birthday in a week's time and I'm laughing my tits off here at the lot of you for being so bleeding gullible. I'm really everyone on this board but you just don't realise it yet. None of you exist outside of my own imagination. You're just vague empty phantoms.

Sorry to have to tell you this EP but you're basically Douglas Jones from 'Twin Peaks-the Return'. I just made you and everyone up out of nothingness and you'll soon disappear and turn in to a weird little gold ball and return to the 'other place' (not COB, just for clarity's sake here). Them's the facts. Deal with 'em you grumpy bugger.
