This time last season Assombalonga had double the goals. I wonder why? [?]

Where are we going wrong?

Assombalonga can not play as a lone striker.

We do need flair too mind

Pulis sets teams up that leave the striker isolated

It won't happen, but I'd love to see us go back to what was working at the start of the game. I genuinely felt excitement during those first two home games. We pressed the opposition, played fast direct football, and we actually looked a threat from set-pieces.

It would be harsh on Hugill who has been doing well, but I'd like to see us give this team another try......

4th and the quarter final of the league cup does not suggest we have gone that far wrong to me.

Especially when most of this Board tipped us for mid table back in August. In fact the question you should be posing is “Why has it gone better than anticipated?”

Impatience. Every season the aim is promotion, ready or not. Comparisons are constantly made with other clubs like Burnley who are regarded as outperforming but you only have to wait 6 months for them to revert to their long-term level.
This season the Championship race is very volatile, and at least one side is going to get promoted on unconvincing results and have a season of misery in the PL.

Where are we going wrong?

we keep changing the manager(s).

when we get a good one, who has a vision for the club and has a go at changing the 142 yeasr of relative failure - we chase them up the road..

change your manager and you need to find another £50M or so for them to have the team that reflects their playing style.

then you have the splits across the squad, the chaos of getting people out of your club and the risk for those coming in.

history tells you that this completely unhinges football clubs. & it don't work.

look at man utd when they went down in 73/74 season - they had 3 managers across 18 months - it creates uncertainty and sends mixed muddling messages to the players.

look at manu now, since 2013 they are on their 4th manager ! that is the same number that they had between 1931 and 1969.

That is the problem. Bringing in managers who have a playing style rather than managers that can manage the skills in their squad.

What was monks playing style bear?

Ultimately even without the pace we should have scored more goals and that failure sits with Pulis. End.

Also love how we're still 4th now. 6th by Christmas.
Nowhere by May.

Where are we going wrong?

We're going wrong in the way we play, not necessarily player dependent. We've suffered without Shotton because his throws opened up more opportunity's but that's about it.

We're far too slow in build up, this is down to Pulis not wanting to take risks, this will bring goals conceded down but will;

a. Limit chances created massively
b. come undone against quicker better teams

Although he is part of the problem (Clayton) I think its a mentality he now has, and not necessarily a skill set (see Downings change in mentality in the last year). Clayton drops too deep to get the ball, meaning straight away the other team drops back, he then looks up and around for a pass (should really know where everyone is, he only passes to 4 different positions) and this gaves the opposition midfield time to mark up our midfield).

This is compounded by Howson and Besic then dropping deeper to help create passing lanes and their back 4 squeeze up, literally playing in to their hands.

Where are we going wrong?

In a nutshell

We have not converted the required % of set pieces that Pulis would have expected.

Most games are going according to plan and had we been hitting those percentages we would be sitting pretty.
