It is that time of year when the radio is full of them.

Some are absolutely cringeworthy, especially Shakey, Cliff and even the ‘Boss’ with the pitiful ‘Santa Clause is coming to town’ plus the likes of Mr Blobby. ‘Its cold outside’ by some joker and ‘I saw momma kissing Santa Clause’ by the Jacksons remain the worst of all time.

Some Christmas songs are actually very good though. As soon as you hear them you are subconsciously transported to a better place.

My favs; I consider these serious songs.

Fairytale of New York = KM and the Pogues.
The Power of Love = FGTH
Driving Home for Christmas = Home boy Rea.
December Will be Magic Again = Kate Bush (this song is actually astonishing)
The Perfect Year = Dina Carroll (more of a New Year song but gets played at Crimbo a lot)

What are your favs?

Christmas Songs?

I love this on the first Sunday in Lent, it means Christmas is just around the corner:

Hills of the north, rejoice;
river and mountain spring,
hark to the advent voice;
valley and lowland, sing;
though absent long, your Lord is nigh;
he judgment brings and victory.

Isles of the southern seas,
deep in your coral caves
pent be each warring breeze,
lulled be your restless waves:
he comes to reign with boundless sway,
and makes your wastes his great highway.

Lands of the East, awake,
soon shall your sons be free;
the sleep of ages break,
and rise to liberty.
On your far hills, long cold and gray,
has dawned the everlasting day.

Shores of the utmost West,
ye that have waited long,
unvisited, unblessed,
break forth to swelling song;
high raise the note, that Jesus died,
yet lives and reigns, the Crucified.

Shout, while ye journey home;
songs be in every mouth;
lo, from the North we come,
from East, and West, and South.
city of God, the bond are free,
we come to live and reign in thee!

However, there are now "modern" lyrics because the original, above, is considered un-pc because of the lines, "Lands of the East awake, soon shall your sons be free".
How fecking ridiculous.

EP - I don't mind your opening ones which you don't like, but I think I'm young enough that they were engrained in my childhood.

I've been listening to heart extra christmas and there's some modern songs on there and I just can't get away with them. I presume in 25 years time, there will be people my age now, who've been listening to these songs and see them as part of christmas.

Some good tunes in that list though, that aren't played on that radio station - Kate Bush and god rest ye merry gentleman to name two.

Some great stuff here (and that's a cracking list Lefty!!)

Although I've officially retired from the Christmas song game (where did I find the time?!!) I still have all my old Christmas compilations and podcasts in Dropbox and they can be accessed at the link below. Help yourselves but please leave me some feedback on here!!

As for my favourite Christmas songs, it's probably one of these:

Anything from Phil Spector's Christmas Gift For You album

Stan Boreson - I Give Up, What Is It?

Sandler & Young - Jingle Bells

Another vote for Sinead O Connor's version of Silent Night

Another vote for Tim Minchin's White Wine In The Sun

Smith & Burrows - When The Thames Froze

Bob Rivers - Walking Round In Women's Underwear

CCC - Body Sleighin'
