Final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth

Just watched this again on BBC4; every bit as poignant as it was when I first watched it 29 years ago.

Arguably BBC comedy’s finest 30 minutes.

Completely agree, I was just thinking about that episode the other day. There's something about the gallows humour against the backdrop of the terror , that's then all extinguished when they 'go over the top'. The finish summarises the First World War and the fact that it does not ' turn out alright in the end'.

Final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth

Am reading a book of 1st hand accounts of soldiers from WW1. Not far in when the first story appears of a 16 year old boy looking into a shop window when he was approached by a woman who looked scornfully at him and pushed a white feather into his palm. He felt so ashamed that he went and lied about his age, joined up and was promptly off to the front.

The woman behind the spreading of this odious practice? None other than Emmeline Pankhurst.

I think white feathers had been around a long time before her though... but I get your point of her partaking in it...

I remember watching it as a child and being completely moved by it. Especially as we'd been used to sugar-coated Hollywood endings.

I genuinely thought there would be a 'happy' ending to the series but it really hit home that no... it was set in the First World War and that's what really would have happened.

To be fair she did more than partake. She headed up a national campaign and thousands of women followed her lead.

There is a re-writing of history that portrays the Kaiser's Germany as somehow merely a bit naughty when compared to the evil of Nazi Germany. At the time Germany was militaristic and expansionist and posed a genuine threat to Britain and the Empire if they had beaten France, they were also expanding the Kreigsmarine to challenge the Royal Navy. The Kaiser was, whilst perhaps not as big a nutter as Adolf, probably for that reason more dangerous.

It isn't fair to judge the actions of people from 100 years ago by modern standards, Ms Pankhurst can either be seen as acting "patriotically" or bullying young men into the trenches.

She could have dressed up like Bob and gone to the front herself.

Is that also the episode where 'mad' Blackadder says that he's "going to Hartlepool for some exploding trousers"?! [:D]

Given Darlings character was portrayed as sneaky and unlikable during the series. His final speech was very moving.

Tim McInnerny has been in Westlife videos, Shakespeare plays and he actually played one of the villians on the Olympic Committee who try and thwart Eddie the Eagle competing in the Olympics. Great actor.

The final episode is the beeb at its best.

This was my favourite series of blackadder with some great one liners, plus Rik Mayall being fantastic in the observation pilots episode.

Remember a few years ago Michael Gove telling us that it 'created myths of catastrophic mistakes perpetrated by a out of touch elite' - remember history lessons at The Dene in the 1980s saying that it was a war full of catastrophic mistakes!

“That’s because it is mud, Sir. We ran out of coffee in 1915” [:D]

“And what have you been using for milk?”

“Spit, Sir....”

“And for sugar.......?”

“Dandruff.....”. [:D]

30 years on, it's aged really well.

Still very funny, and still gets you at the end.

General Melchet to Lieutenant George on going over the top.

Melchet: Don't worry, we'll be right behind you!

Blackadder: About 30 miles behind you.

As close to perfection as television gets.

An incredibly moving and fitting tribute.

Summed up by Edmund’s last lines of the series:

“Blackadder: ‘Whatever it was, I’m sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?’”

lest we forget

I think Ben Elton co-wrote this and I recall hearing that both his grandfathers fought on opposite sides in the war. He’s wrote a couple of decent books on the subject too. The first casualty was one of them.

Ben Elton gets a lot of stick for his stand up - and some of it is deserved, but he has written some excellent books, plays and I believe written and directed movies down under.

He has (or had) talent for observation and pathos.

As for war, any war - as Spike Milligan attested, it was chaotic, laced with stupidity, humour, camaraderie, death, grief and such a tragic waste of young lives.

Speaking of Spike Milligan, his book 'Adolf Hitler. His part in my downfall' was a great read and I would recommend it.
Its from his war diaries.
