It seems to be par for the course. As soon as the minister for brexit realizes the difficulty of the job, he resigns. That will be Raab's next step.

I know its going to happen etc but isn't it just trade 101 that an island will have a limited number of border/access points, especially for high volume trade items; and traders are going to use the nearest, most efficient, and cost effective point of access to an island whenever possible. Why would anyone with even a passing knowledge of geography not have known how important the Dover-Calais route was to trade between the UK and Europe? Surely it must have crossed his mind in the past what was happening with 'Operation Stack' when there was disruption on either side?

God help us when a full plutocracy is reached in this country.Totally self serving, self interested politicians and business leaders with not one iota of concern, other than lining their own pockets at the expense of the disadvantaged, disenfranchised and vulnerable. Just take Mr Jeff Fairburn as an example of what you should expect when the privileged elite get their way, backed all the way by Jeff Fairburn wannabes.

The whole thing is pathetic.no one has a clue, must be the biggest ferkup since ferkups were invented.
Im not politically minded and im not sure which way i would have voted,if i could.maybe remain, maybe.
However the vote was taken, and we abide by that. it seems neither party gave correct information to the public, and matters have gone downhill from there.
Its been pathetic from the politicians,a complete shambles and this latest quote is quite horrifying, from a guy who is in charge of negotiations.
Its probably the biggest national descion since we joined the E.U.and in my 60 odd years never seen such a mess.
Makes uk look like a laughing stock.thank god most of the world are looking more closely at the even worse political farce across the atlantic.

Brattleboro - your correct and Jam.

People who are hoodwinked by Tories and the lies about caring for the working people of this country; beggars belief.
How people cannot see through this utter lie...all the Tories are about is themselves and robbing the working man of his public services whilst popping a few quid in his pay packet to keep him quiet and distracted whilst we (the Tories) run down slowly but surely every single public service so we can line private investors pockets who look after us Tories when we retire with directorships etc...

I just wish this inept lot would bring this 'deal' to parliament so it can be voted down and finally a 2nd referendum will be mysteriously announced ; shock horror ; NOT.

It doesn't matter which party is in Government. They're all incompetent and mostly in thrall to the plutocrats. The electorate unfortunately believes the big lie that tax rates must be continually reduced for the rich to stop them leaving the country. The stupidity of the 1970s Labour Government in raising tax rates to ridiculous levels created this belief, but we now need to accept that 50% won't have the same effect as 97%.

Interesting demonstration there of whatsboutery to turn a thread about Dominic Rab’s incompetence Into a dig at Labour’s mismanagement of the economy 45 years ago.

It's a hefty gaffe, but he didn't say what some people are representing him as having said: "I hadn't quite understood the full extent of this [i.e. our reliance on the Dover-Calais crossing]" doesn't mean "I hadn't understood that we are reliant on the Dover-Calais crossing".

See, for example, this from baby-faced boffin Brian Cox: "How could it possibly come as a surprise to Dominic Raab that our most important trade gateway is that which is closest geographically to our most important market?"

And this from Rafael Behr of the Grauniad: "Raab admitted that his grasp of the detail had been upgraded with some salient facts – such as the importance of the Channel to commerce with Europe".

And this (wisecrack) from independent historian Francis Young: "The assertion that Britain is an island surrounded by sea and, therefore, dependent on sea ports is deeply controversial, in my view".

I hate the Tories as much as the next man, but these responses are lame.

Clearly the UK will not be allowed to leave the EU and ultimately will be absorbed into UESR.

The country is now effectively held hostage by the EU and UK elites and escape is impossible.

As far as I can see, the EU are sticking to the rules that they and the UK drew up. Why should anyone expect them to make an exception to their rules, especially if the leaver was involved in making them in the first place.

"The electorate unfortunately believes the big lie that tax rates must be continually reduced for the rich to stop them leaving the country"

It's not a lie with regards to corporation tax, though. Which is definitely a case of less is more but the government/electorate always fails to grasp this concept.

bit harsh lambasting people for voting tory when you look at how inadequate the alternatives are.

We should adopt the french system where spoiled ballots are counted as opposed to voting for the best of a bunch as we do.

No argument. The EU is a benign technocracy. But it's not as democratic as the USA and there are fewer individual freedoms, so USE doesn't really compute.

The problem is that as power within the EU continues to centralise, how long will it remain benign?
