12 dead in California shooting

At a Borderline Bar & Grill

A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy is among those killed, Sgt. Ron Helus had been on the force for 29 years and was one of the first officers on the scene in response to 911 calls of shots fired. He was looking to retire in the "next year or so," Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters.

The sergeant died in hospital, Dean added.

The suspected gunman in the fatal Thousand Oaks bar shooting has not been identified yet, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said, who added that the FBI are assisting. The suspect was dead when police arrived on the scene.

Dean said, "It's well too early to know if he took his own life."

This is the largest mass shooting in America in.......11 days[|)]

There’s nothing anyone can do about guns or psychos in the US — they’ve (Americans) been shooting each other since the place was invented. Guns come over from the border like confetti while American made weapons are literally everywhere— it’s like the flu if you don’t have now you’ll get one sooner rather than later. No one President or acts of Congress will stop shooters or shootings in the US — it’s a way of life.

The 307th mass shooting in America this year.

It will never be eradicated, but it could be severely reduced if American politicians stopped taking NRA blood money and brought in controls that the vast majority of Americans (even many Republicans) support.

Just seen the place had an armed security guard.

You’ll be shocked to know he was the first person the gunman shot dead.

I thought having armed guards everywhere would solve the problem?

12 people die per day in the USA due to gun crime every day on average anyway

0.000003 of the population die every day in that country and have since time began

What is this for news, 12 all die at once instead of over the usual 24 hours?

Whats the significance?

"Whats the significance?"

And with that question we have possibly the stupidest post ever on this site.

And that's saying something.

Edit

For info

According to the website Gun Violence Archive, more than 12,000 people have been killed by firearms in the US so far this year, including about 3,000 people under 18.
That number does not include an annual estimate of 22,000 suicides via firearm.

Since when and in what universe does that add up to 12 deaths a day?

let the yanks sort there own XXXXXX out, lets be honest, its still a XXXXXXed up, deeply religious, racist country, infact it requires a degree of stupidity to let its leader flourish

The president has no real power, he has to answer to congress, too many vested interest in arms sales to ban weapons because some kids they dont know got shot , they've been sending kids to their death for every war that had ever been, there is some fact about the men of congress in the states never have their own family in the army over there, thats human nature, 12 deaths to that lot is not even newsworthy, if they can shoot a school full of kids (several times) and still no change in gunlaw, XXXXXX them, they deserve it

As ever there seems to be moral indignation about what is going on in the US and why it is going on.

The stats say you are twice as likely to die intentionally in the US than the UK. That could be homicide, justifiable homicide or suicide. That doesn't sound good for the US except that the rate per 100k people is 15 - about average around the world - and lots of countries like Russia and Brazil are far worse.

Some perspective please. I lived in the US for over 30 years but I don't know anyone who was murdered.

People on here make living in the US sound like the Somme in 1916.

Anterimus, actually I read it as he wrote it. I don't usually expect to have to decode the English of a native speaker.

Borobuddha, I never said it was, it was a legitimate question

I couldn't understand if MightyDuck was putting up a legitimate statistic or downplaying the events.

This
A) "More under 17's have been killed or injured by guns in 2018 than were killed in 9/11."

Is very different to this

B) More under 17's have been killed or injured by guns in 2018 than THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT were killed in 9/11.

To be honest I still don't know which he is referring to

Because if it was B it is clearly not true.

If it was A: who is making the joke?

Seen Republicans on tv are already trotting out “thoughts and prayers” and talking about mental health.

I’m sure the NRA’s $54m contribution to the party at the last election had connection to that response.

It’s also interesting how they keep blaming mental health, yet Trump cut mental health spending by 20%.

Given that, statistically speaking, 130% of Americans have guns that's actually not that bad.

Statistics being skewed by people owning multiple guns of course but tells a story.

Sorry I meant "hopes and prayers" that'll save them.

***Given that, statistically speaking, 130% of Americans have guns that's actually not that bad.***

I'm not sure I believe the 130% stat, but gun ownership is far too high whatever. But considering how many guns there are, the homicide rate is quite low. Far fewer guns per head in Russia but far more murders per head.

There aren't more gun murders per head in Russia than the USA. There are about 5 times more gun homicides per head in the USA than Russia.

"During the September 11 attacks of 2001, 2,996 people were killed (including the 19 hijackers)" (source wiki).

"Nearly 1300 children die and 5790 are treated for gunshot wounds each year." (source linked below)

Based on that, the statement that more U-17 have been killed AND INJURED by guns than people killed during 9/11 is correct and will be correct by say the end of May every year.

Poor Brasil .......... yes, it does have a lot more homicides per head than virtually anywhere. But surely the US needs to be compared with other more developed economies?

What seems distinctively US though is this 'mass-shooting by disturbed man with gun' thing. I have never heard this happening in Brasil.

I am in Sao Paulo for a few months. So it got me looking at the situation/comparison with the US. So, its seen as relatively safe in Brasil (compared to Rio, and the North Eastern cities). Homicide rate is 6x London, but declining, and (I looked as this was where I spent most of my time when working for a US company), less per head than San Antonio, Texas.

Compared to most of the US, it is relatively more difficult to get a legal weapon here (the new Trump-like guy wants to make it easier). So only two groups have guns - the (sometimes) bad guys (the numerous police groups), and the really bad guys - the gangs.

Sao Paulo is dominated by one gang - the PCC. So, inter gang killings are not so common (as other Brasil cities) and they control the favelas, with the police leaving them to it.

In Brasil terms Sao Paulo seems to 'work'. It is not exactly Yarm, but you can live reasonably safely.

While,I don't think the situation in the US will ever change significantly, being 'better than Brasil' probably isn't a good very marker.
