He comes across better in times of a bit of adversity (like recently) than he does when he is winning everything in sight.

He knows how to stick up for himself, I like that.

I don't get the hatred of him. I quite like the odd colourful character who says controversial things. The management game is more interesting for a bit of arrogance, rivalry and controversy.

I find his mind games'/distraction techniques so brazen, so nakedly obvious that they're extremely dull.

That said, there's an old biography of his early years in management with Leiria and Porto, written in conversation with Luis Lourenco, which is fascinating, particularly when talking about preparation for specific in-game situations.

There's also an old story of his time at Real Madrid when he recognised a bloke who'd travelled from Los Angeles to the Bernabeu for a Clasico match, and failed to get a ticket. He invited him to the game, got him a seat with the support staff, and took him along to the Champions League game against Manchester United the following week.

He's probably a far better bloke than I like to imagine.

My dad said he is very similar to Cloughie. Cloughie was before my time so not sure how accurate that is though.

I've always liked him, and still do, but less so nowadays. He used to have a bit more entertainment value in the past when he was saying controversial stuff, and it was normally aimed as a distraction or occasionally purely for his own or others amusement. He has strayed recently into tedious moaning, but hopefully this sort of result will see him emerge into a bit better form.

I've always thought of him as a sort of modern-day, 21st century Clough, and that's why I've always liked him.

He used to have the results to back it up too, but like Clough's did, his career has sort of slid a little bit these last few years and there's probably an argument to say his methods are a bit outdated now.

I actually think that, when he leaves United which he inevitably will soon, he could do worse than go to a club with reasonably low expectations and turn them around, spruce up his CV with some new strings to his bow, rather than just go to PSG or Bayern Munich where he'll be instantly expected to win the league and Champions League and under pressure from day one.

Iíll go against the grain here, no time for the bloke at all, everything is about him, he turns everything around so heís the focal point, no denying his management CV & as the previous poster stated maybe a lesser club to show he is as good as he makes out & can manage clubs at both ends of the scale

For me that is the measure of the best of em, which Cloughy & Ferguson had Shankly too

Itís true Erimus that Jose does that, but Cloughie did exactly the same thing IMHO. Although Iíd didnít witness most of it at the time, Iíve read literally every book about Clough ever written and watched every documentary.

Horses for courses though of course. I just think the game needs characters. I find Pep and Klopp and Pocchetino all a bit dull, personally. Nice blokes but not really worth watching them talk for very long.

I can't bear Klopp. Comes across as insincere and fake to me. No-one is that smiley.

Surely Porto winning the champions League in this era is comparable to Clough winning it in the 70s. Things were a lot more open then, and you had far greater chance of winning a pot at a smaller club.

Cannot stand him, his style of football with the funds he has available to him is shocking. He is a total primadonna, if the team fails its the players fault, if it succeeds it's all him.

Arrogant and a misogynist to boot.Hopefully he will fail at Man U and that will begin a rapid fall from grace, love him to end up a bitter wreck.

Heís had some incredible sides, happens once the players buy into his methods. If Man Utdís players are getting on board now, they could be an a dark horse for the CL. A decent CB in January would help like.

One of the best of all time for me. Completely changed the game (although it has arguably changed since and is in danger of leaving him behind).

The arrogance/comments are perfectly positioned to take the focus away from the players (and they largely work), Karanka did this quite a bit when he was at Boro.
